The ID card scheme, Internet, CCTV and a growing ‘social media’ to name some of the key examples. The benefits of technology are not automatic – they require channelling in a way that awesome democratic engagement and freedom of expression. Here in India the choice is whether technology is going to be used to empower individuals, or the state. We need to continue to guard against the creeping surveillance society, but we also need to embrace technology for what it can positively achieve - nothing less than a revolution in the way we do politics and build civil society. |

Thanks for the referral Ms.Ruchi Chawla.
Manish I ditto your comment on the subject.
Mr.Manish Kumar the coin has two sides. I don't know whether technology can improve democracy, but we need two party [bi-party] systems to rule our country to strengthen our democratic systems. The law and order has been taken in hands by the different & mushroom political parties which damage the function & the existence of our democracy. All the political forces in our country have been punctuating our national growth in the name of democracy including not allowing the parliament to function.

YES - because it definitely would help in improving democracy. NO - because the systems like Law, rules and regulations, etc., must be put in place before and while using technology. Unfortunately, leaders who are elected are mostly ignorant and arrogant to know about these technology advancement. Even if they know about these, they are so selfish and do not have the common sense or idea as to where and how it can be implemented. Even if they know where and how to implement it, they are too street smart as to not to use it so that they can continue swindling the nation and the public. The worst part one part of the public is unaware because of their illiteracy whereas the other part of the public knows all about this but is indifferent about its effects. Both ways the public think that they are too smart to bother about these trivial things and carry on striving for to do whatever their own selfish minds tell them until they get #@$%ed badly again and again. |

You are spot on Narayan...IT/ Technology can aid in improving democracy and not improving by itself. There are other human factors to it that must be taken into account to shape its improvement in real terms. Just as you cannot automate every damn thing, you cannot solely rely on technology to take you through every time you bump across something irritating.

One can see the implementation of Pan Card people getting more than one pan card, voter card issue one knows better not to comment, UID card how far it will be successful one has to wait and see. Most important of all if the technological measures are implemented corrected then the political parties will not get the votes of bogus voters and they have to face defeat or ignominy. So forget it son.

I support your idea, Kankurthy Sir.
The only point that stands.

Only removal of corruption can bring real democracy in INDIA. This needs a big revolution like JAI PRAKASH NARIAN;S during emergency . A ll curopt leaders must be imprisoned and none of them must be spared. Except all this there properties must be seized and deposited in Govt.treasury.This may be able to run our economy for years tax free.

Dear Krishna , this is because people accept it butr do remember that there is end to everything. But try and do the best you can. It depends over the personnal thought how to live your life .
before posting something on corruption, think and think why corruption is happening?? Your Ideas are similar to a Dictator. Corruption in in its micro-state is a basic human behavior. Corruption cannot be that easily removed. its roots lies in the beginning of human life. As a father, we always give "Benefits" aka "Boosting" aka "Money" to our kids to motivate them for doing something. we are corrupt in the basic sense. this is getting amplified to a much greater level at politician level. thats all. corruption is a brainchild of none other than general people to boost some of their interests. to negate this factors, we need to work from the basics and make a good country. Human Race's Most prized asset is their next Generation aka "King", if they are made to go in a better way, all these can be solved, Or else this debate will continue with no ending.

Though not in a practical way, it is technology that has open the world to us and whatever development and openness and accountability and relaxations and regulations we feel today is mainly because of it

May be, if at all everyone bears the responsibility of lifting it and breaking it. India is basically a land of opportunity for those who are largely into agriculture and farming, it is not for the MNC,s and Corporate with white collared educated morons. It largely depends on the huge population and with strong electorial mandate. India totally follows the british system of democracy. single largest party gets the call for forming the government. Going by the concept of technology and democracy. In a vast country like ours it will surely take few generation to get the maximum out of it, it is mainly due to illitreacy and lack of technical knowledge. From my point of view only politician can take care of democracy in the country, technology can only be an application to exercise the approach towards conducting democracy. when there is red tapism prevailing, beaureacracy will take its stand. we are still in the blossoming stage, it will take long years to reach the tall order of technology and subsequently, achieve the desired goals. still democracy will be questioned when there is so much of heirarchy to be maintained. Above all there has to be transperency over all in functioning of the government. With high inflation and underutilisation of man power resource, it will be difficult. With trial and error methods may be hammer technology would work.

Democracy means; for the people, by the people and the people. So, if almost all the voter cast their vote, we can say its effective democracy. EVM has improved the voting system in India. But we need a more convenient and user friendly voting system which can increase voting percentage from 40% to at least 80%. Non voting intellectuals should be encouraged to become the part of voting system which, in turn will improve the quality of leaders in parliament. At present mostly poor and illiterate make the government which is controlled by rich & high profile people. There are many options as; biometrics, UID card with swipe facility, voting by mobile phone etc.

Though, i agree with Mr Dragon. i think technological use of spectrum may reduce the temptation of lowering the dignity of the democracy.

People have always misjudged Technology. It can be used both in a positive and in a negative way, depending on the user. And now a days high end technology is Mostly used by people who are in the need of it and in most causes by fraudsters, Black-Hackers, Bureaucrats and the most important of all Media ( Including Paper, TV, Reality, etc). On a positive note Technology is used to discover the earlier activities by another group of people, some working for money and some for national protection. There must a be a charter for regulation on production and usage of High End Technology, otherwise the technology would and always be used for bad ways, and will do more bad than good. and the one section who are affected by this all is the weak, ignorant and above all the so-called innocent people.
