Dear friends, I was reading a an article on cell phone waste management and I came across this issue. So, I thought to share this with the experts of our platform.

The discarded old handsets could poison the environment as an estimated 8,000 tonnes of cell phone waste will be there on Earth by 2012. There is a growing need to better manage the rising cell phone waste, as it is posing a threat to the environment, according to a whitepaper by global consultancy firm, Deloitte.

Due to rapid improvement in technology and product design, users are opting for new mobile phones and are discarding the old ones. With the absence of a proper recycle and reuse program, about 8,000 tonnes of toxic cell phone components are estimated to be dumped in landfills by 2012. The resulting contamination will have far reaching consequences for the environment and all living beings.

The problem begins when retired handsets end up in landfill sites or if they are dumped illegally, leading to toxic substances seeping into the groundwater, making disposal of old cells a problem for the world. As India is one of the fastest growing markets in the world in terms of mobile phone subscribers, we need to be more aware of the threat, which these gadgets pose to the environment and strict government guidelines should be created to deal with it.

So, please post your ideas on how can we tackle this problem ?

Proper recycling facilities

idea posted by Sonal Singh Project Manager, Nortel Networks

There should be a proper disposal facility followed by a proper process of recycling of these toxic waste mobile phones so that these gadgets can be used again and again in different forms thus avoiding the harm to environment.

There must be proper facilities for recycling mobile phones so that they are reused.  Most of the components can be reused... rest recycled.  It should be made a policy so that everyone adheres to it.

Cellular Brands like NOKIA has already started a campaign in SOUTH EAST ASIA. Where they have launched pocket events on educating users to go for recycling schemes for newer handsets, making them environment conscious.

Mind you people this is no gimmick, a conscious step is being taken and people here are supporting it.

Find the alternates to toxic components

idea posted by Abdul Raheem.Syed Systems Engineer, Leading CEM vendor

We need to work on the recycling process first and ensure that the toxic material is not dumped. We need to start the study on this to invent what else can be done with this waste material to reduce the harm so caused to the environment.

Secondly,we need to create the toxic free components in our future handsets. This is not an easy job. Though,it's worth doing R&D in this angel at least for our future.

Reduce phone changing frequency

idea posted by Reni sebastian Assistant Engineer, State government of Keralam

We change phones with new ones frequently. By reducing this frequency we can reduce the number old phones.

I think majority of such cases are due to the expiry/repairs in handsets . Frequent change would cost much to the subscriber and one would not be ready to spend again in short duration in case of high end mobiles. Just my view..

Add your argument:

Reusage of internal components

idea posted by Vishnu M. Head - Software QA/QC , UAEEXchange & Financial Services Ltd.

Some of the components can be reused. like The chips, the receiver, and rarely the display as well.

I found this when I bought a new cell phone. The old model fetch me 800 INR and i asked the guy about the usage of that phone and he said that the components will be reused..

The green awareness campaigns which will pick the used phones and recycle them will also do good!

Ya definitely reusing the internal components will help a lot

Manufacturers Responsibility

idea posted by Ravindra Sharma Managing Consultant, CHEF-India

Manufacturers must feel responsible on their own accord and in fact offer incentives to encourage such initiative. The customer, returning to manufacturer representatives, may as well feel better assured on data security issues as well.

A manufacturer being better aware and equipped to handle such materials, in turn must adopt best practices to disposal.

cell phones should be made with reuseable plastics to reduse waste

A seperate team to be monitor the recycle in all cell manufacturers

Is it a viable solution Mr.Sai? Is it possible to have a mobile without any chip? I'll be the first one to appreciate if that is the case
