Even though India has great amount of research going on, at renound labs by great scientists, the new drug development process is slowing down. There are various reasons to it. Let us find out the challenges faced by them.

Ethical issues

idea posted by Bindu Narayan Product Development Manager, Care Biomedicals

There is a complete ethical guideline to be follwed for research, which includes clauses like selection of research topic, confidentiality of data, compensation of Research Subjects for Accidental Injury, etc

Ethical issue of testing drugs on animals is biggest challenge now for drug discovery. And their are many more which pose a challenge in the drug discovery.

Integration of complex and disconnected data sets.

idea posted by Bindu Narayan Product Development Manager, Care Biomedicals

The effective integration of data and knowledge from many disparate sources is very crucial for drug discovery. It is a key element of conducting scientific investigations. Today the reasearch in going on in almost every part of the world and therefore accesssibilty also becomes a problem.

Yeah a ot of data right from the R&D stage has to be generated, it involves lot of effort and money. Sharing of data within commercial establishment is not possible due to secrecy clause and the ongoing competition. The academia must be invoved in this process by the government where they do the basic research and supply the data to the industry. It will save lot of time and money.

Add your argument:

Infrastructure

idea posted by Bindu Narayan Product Development Manager, Care Biomedicals

Drug discovery and development is a complex and requires adequate infrastructure. At this time, it will be extremely challenging for Indian companies to create the entire infrastructure required for this purpose in-house. This slows down the drug discovery because of the cost incurred.

I strongly agree with Bindu, that infrastructure is an unavoidable challenge for the drug research labs. Not only infrastruture but EQUIPMENTS is also a problem. There are many processes which needs to be outsourced because of the lack of equipments, this not only increases the cost but it slows down the process also.

Add your argument:

Coping with high failure rates

idea posted by Kaushik Dutta Product Development Manager, Biocon

Drug Discovery & Development is characterized by high failure rates. It takes 10-12 years of R&D wherein 5,000-10,000 compounds are screened before a new drug reaches the market.

Kaushik is right, research is a field where most of the inventions receive recognition after the person responsiblefor it is dead, This because of the failure rates, dealing with life science is not an easy job, every time you get the unexpected results and everytime you have change your plan of action, strategy and procedure. It requires great patience.

Therefore it is agreat challenge for drug discovery.

Drug Discovery Approach

idea posted by Anindya Basu Research Scholar, NTU

Till date most of the potential drug candidates that are tested, are mainly based on single target identification approaches. The chief objective in designing the drug is generally to inhibit a particular biomolecule within the body. But a living organism is a very complex system with millions of interacting molecular species. A particular biomolecule that can have devastating impact on a particular cell can be an absolute necessity for the survival of another cell within the same organism. I think this can be another very important cause of drug failures even though sufficient infrastructure is available. Do we need to think of some other approaches for this purpose?

I agree to you, drugs are tested at molecular level in vitro and then when actually tested on human body they fail. Because human body has many more complications affecting the same process..

Brain Drain...

idea posted by Jatin Shrinet M.Sc student, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi

In todays scenario theory of "Strugle for existence" and "survival of fittest" revolves around Money.. Very frankly, if you see the amount of stress, hard work, time and patience required in the field of research and the amount of money a fresher or a researcher gets in this field is nothing if compared with other professions.. New bright minds dont want to waste their talent for nuts so they change their fields (a type of brain drain) or they opt for other countries for the research (another level of brain drain)... So i think we should take some steps towards it..
