The change management process is key to the successful outcome of a project. The process ensures that each change introduced is properly defined, considered and approved before implementation. But sometimes the change doesn't take place and resistance to change is seen.

What factors give rise to resistance to change.

Why do people resist to change ???

Why is there resistance to change?

Fear of losing position

idea posted by Samir Das Tech Architect, Infosys

I could say that the factor that give rise to resistance to change is the fear of losing the job due to change. They often think that change will take place with job cuts.

DON'T YOU THINK FEAR IS BEAUTIFUL .

BUT ONLY ISSUE IS RIGIDITY & MINIMUM FLEXIBILITY.

AN EMPLOYEE HAS TO BE A GYMNAST & NOT A HEAVY WEIGHT WRESTLER

The employees are not told what is expected of them

Resistance occurs because of no planning and the employees are not told what is expected from them. They are just told how to change their work.

The employees are not what is expected from them and what benefit they will get. This will lead to confusion and then resistance.

I agree with Pramod on this, people resist change because of Lack of information as to what is expected from them and why the change is important. Also, some of them, see it on the basis of how they’ll be personally affected rather than seeing the big picture for the entire organization.

Diffidence

Most of the times it is the fear of losing their comfort zone and by this I do not mean just losing one's position or getting demoted but also having to rethink on that particular change or rather take a diversion. This has also happened to me a lot of times but on analysis I realised that I was not being confident enough to change directions. This is mainly because of the worry of failure and also the rejection to own up this failure due to lack of confidence in one's capabilities. So the best way that one adopts is to run away from it and so I think thats why the resistance.

Hello Ramya,

I agree - it's what I was trying to get across on my own submission where I said that people fear they cannot make the required adjustments.

Nice to have someone on the same wavelength.

Regards,

Tony.

Lack of trust

I see resistance due to lack of trust and faith. The employees might have had problems with the management earlier and they don't trust them anymore.

Have to work overtime

idea posted by Dipen Trivedi Project Manager, 3i Infotech

When the employees are involved in change ,during their normal working hours. They are not able to to their normal work and later on they are held accountable for that. This will make the employees to work more and make up for the time lost in change effort. Keeping in mind this they resist for any change in the future.

All of the above . . .

Resistance to change can be caused by many factors and robust change management interventions are required at many levels to overcome that resistance.

There are five general situations from which resistance can arise: (1) employees lack information about the change’s implications; (2) change initiators lack sufficient information to design the change; (3) people are resisting because they feel they can’t make the required adjustments; (4) people will lose out in the change and have considerable power to resist; and (5) speed is essential and change initiators possess considerable power.

Each of these has its own challenges and approaches - and each approach has its potential drawbacks.  For instance, if people lack information then you can spend time and effort in educating them - if you have the time and can spare the effort.

Happy to do what I can to help out if anyone faces specific issues.

It will be another fail attempt to change

idea posted by Rajiv Vig Sales/BD Manager, IBM

I think employees might have seen earlier attempts to change has been failed, and they may think that the change which will happen now also will fail. Another fail attempt to change. So they resist to change.
