Dear Amish what you advice to a child is the right way for acquiring knowledge. However each child is expected to earn marks as per the desires of the teachers whims and fancies.
Therefor marks are also essential for the purpose of entry to institutions.

I have a keen interest in how my child comes up with the exams. And i tell him to be sincere and write on his own words all the answers. He does this religiously. But the result is pathetic. Not that he scores below A+, but rather because the assessment was totally wrong. Some asked him to repeast what was dictated as notes during classes, some told him it was not correct while others sympathized with him but did not yield and give him the marks. While in the process my son loses marks and cannot top the goals he sets for himself, because the assesser is not placed to understand his point of view, not positioned to understand why such an answer was derived from him, but fails to see the significance of his answers and judge him based on his knowledge quotient. So the real culprit is the system of exams which makes us repeat things verbatim like parrots without using any brains. I felt pity at my son's plight, while he loves to write on his own, he fears getting less marks or get his marks cut for his indivuality. Second thing amazing is that while and inspite of all our knowledge, in our life we are given to address and respond to queries and rectify any faults or incorrectness, whether it is the IT returns, tender or submission of documents, quotes or anything for that matter, when in doubt we always get a response from the opposite end asking for clarifications. Meaning that all these actions are not a one time affair. We can end up living our lifetime battling in a court of law, or repeatedly for a time frame keep addressing or resolving or clarifying issues in real life situations. But when it comes to exams, a 3 hour tenure defines the outcomes of how our life would end up. Certainly there is something missing our there ain't it. The kids have to sweat it out, mug up all the hoards of books and answers and find themselves at the receiving end as well. Why not have a system that would enable the assesser raise quary and let the kid ample time to respond like in real life situation, whereby the kid's kowledge quotient can be adequately tested? We have reached the moon and fathomed the oceans, climbed the tallest mountains, but the simplest of things to do is change the way assessers look at the answers needs to be relooked.
