Construction industry use a number of tools for planning and scheduling and most refer to P6 or MSP 2007.

Selection of tools and application of knowledge is a skill and as a first step the professional who is to recommend a tool for any organization needs to gain the knowledge. I think that one has to be at least a PSP to do the job better.

What are the factors that will enhance better planning and scheduling ?

Professional needed to select planning scheduling tools

idea posted by Angyan P. Jagathnarayanan Director, JUMP

Many constructions companies including PMCs which I have visited use the wrong tool for planning and scheduling. Many others did not know how to use the tool effectively.  My study for recommendation based on assessment has been that whoever selected the tool was not a professional in Planning and cost engineering.  The reason why I support AACE International for their recommended practices.

person involved in the job should be aware of WBS and CPM/ PERT. That is all about planning. Please do not plan , which you can not monitor. It is worse than poor planning.

Use Gantt Charts

idea posted by Sumit Singh Construction-Heavy, Sobha Developers

Gantt Charts (Gant Charts) are useful tools for analyzing and planning more complex projects. They:

  • Help you to plan out the tasks that need to be completed
  • Give you a basis for scheduling when these tasks will be carried out
  • Allow you to plan the allocation of resources needed to complete the project, and
  • Help you to work out the critical path for a project where you must complete it by a particular date.

When a project is under way, Gantt Charts help you to monitor whether the project is on schedule. If it is not, it allows you to pinpoint the remedial action necessary to put it back on schedule.
