The main reason why people work for more hours is for money. The companies pay more incentives it they work overtime. So the employees should work only for 8 hrs a day and the company should also not allow any employee to work more than 8 hrs. This will bring a solution to this problem. :) |

Yes employees of big corporate house work 15-20hrs because of deadline, tension, pressure & in return they certainly expect good money in terms of salary. incentives, stocks paid vacation for family, quarterly parties etc etc etc however this is in every industry & all companies even in a mid size companies.
I have also come across some people who do not work for money but they do it because they love their work so much that they forget they have a family.

One target need to be met, but at the same time while measuring the employ and department productivity, 8 hours office time must need to evaluated. The best employee is the one who think smartly, plan smartly and then executive smartly with the given office timing. One activity is not important, productivity is important and if we shall measure the productivity w.r.t. 8 hours office time, then its the actual smartness. |

Yes it is happening either because of lack of time management skills or he/she is overburden with work which leads to decrease in productvity which further leads to hypertension or stress.
I think it depends on capabalities of each and every employee and if we know our capablities we can manage things in much more better way.
Yes and it is lack of time-management on the part of over-working employee rather than the work-exigency that make anyone sleep less. Besides, it may that the failed stress-management of the employee is giving insomnia to him/her, which requires to be treated.
Length of stay in office is absolutely no bench-mark for the actual productivity. And yes, I agree with Gargi that managements should stop paying for worthless overtimes.

Gargi I don't agree to your idea of Corporate employees sleep less than 6 hours because Companies pay overtime... No.... After certain level in employment, it is more of Higher Aspirations ( careers & Financial) that drives one to try run an extra mile. So I feel its more of trying to run "an extra mile" or maybe inefficiency.... in certain industries ya maybe overtime maybe the factor... but in manufacturing and service industry its more of the other two....

In this professional world there is no limitation of one's greed. Here,Greed(Aspiration) is associated with high position, social status, money, cynosure etc.Since all things are not possible spontaneously. That's why human nature gives birth to " Stressful Sleep".
Remedy-"Curtail expectation, increase simplicity and then watch...everything will be normal "
|
|
Gargi I donot agree with your viewpoint of overtime payment as it is not applicable to management employees.I feel the culture of the company is responsible for such a thing. If the department head sits in office late night, then it is expected that everyone has to sit late.So if this attitude changes, things would improve a lot. |

The solution might lie in changing the organizational culture. A culture in which putting in long hours is seen as being more productive is likely to produce stressed employees. The reason could be that time is measurable; effort is not. Appropriate hours with adequate work should be the norm and this should be encouraged through building up the culture that way. Incentives also need to tied up similarly without emphasizing the time put in.

Sensor about health and capability first lies with employees; if they can handle extra workload only then they should accept certain job roles; else this is betrayal with self and with company.....

Basicaly I agree that employees have to be self regulated. In addition to a general "igienic legal norm" (giving guidance for average max working daily/weekly hours, and a max per period, like a month, of extra working hours)
An external norm alone, in itself isn't generally able to solve once and for ever the issues (don't pay extra hours: you will do any case extra hours...not payed just to save your employment; result oriented evaluation ? fine, of course, but when the project schedule is unrealistically tight, you risk never to go to sleep...)

I guess the best medicine for stress or any tensions is meditation. If you do a little bit of Yoga or Gym it would sufficient to work more than 12 hours a day. :) But off course working more than 8 hours is not preferable. Every person should make a strict schedule on his calendar and mind that he has to work only 8 hours and work 8 hours only office work not chatting or mailing or browsing or personal work. Then every work can be finished on time and no extra effort or hours required. I guess most of us including me, start the work after lunch and that will off course go till 10. So if we start the work in the morning at 8 or 9, you can off course finish it by 5 or 6. Just give it a try. Let me know if did not work for you. :) |

There seems to be bit of ambiguity. Corporate employees by and large are grouped under Indirect employees and not eligible for overtime. Most of the corporate employees who would be victims of health problems are in the upper strata and susceptible to diseases as mentioned by Mr. Garg. It is inevitable that these sect of employees are prone to destroy their health. One reason which strongly can be attributed to the company's policy, to keep amending their annual plans from time to time without adhering to the long range forecasting plans. This is the main hurdle. Added to this problem are other problems encountered in areas like manpower attrition, more work in progress, procrastination, decrease in turns of inventory, adhering to traditional or conservative norms which does not significantly speak of Change Management or implementation of Lean with 6 sigma. Comparing with corporate employees responsible for similar work load abroad, we are at an disadvantage because although we are globalizing our industries and stepping into World class management catagory. But we still hold traditional views which are transferred from our predecessors about management style, administration and implementation of policies which are not in line or gets amalgamated with the various activities down under, causing hurdles of serious nature. Hence overtime becomes necessary. These employees abroad are more organised, with systems in place, procedures well defined, tracking results with optimum accuracy and very effective communication across the entire organisation. So the fortunate employee is not only fortunate to streamline and work in harmony with other team members, but also has the benefit of going on a vacation which is mandatory and enforced. This keeps his health in good shape and he enjoys working for the organisation.

If it is so ... both employee and the Co is doing wrong. The Co lures the staff for extra payments, promotion, bonus etc. The staff goes ahead to fulfill their amibitions and thus a nexus of "bad norms" are created. As all of us know that there is a 'minimum' requirement of sleep for any human being. Jobs performed breaking this requirement may not be flawless. Industry body like NASCOM, FICCI, Asochem may come forward to make some uniform rule binding upon all. |

I say...Corporate employees are much exposed to today's competition, technology, advantages, entertainment available, and his own Growth path, new way of relaxation..and so on... they are indulging themselves with any of these mode and reducing there sleep time....

Very true. Most of the IT outsourcing companies. Wipro, tcs, satyam, Infosys. These companies are charging lumsum from the client for their services and rarely there is a call coming. Also Its popular in US consulate where husband and wife goes to US visa the consular officer asking him what are you doing in office as they work in the same place get marry there.
In US rarely they marry a co-worker. I also heard they mostly touch the key board not going to lock mode on the terminal. So once person does hitting all the keyboard ever 10 min so that it cannot get locked and rest goes to sleep. Most of the IT Engineer come came from India on a short trip cannot work here as US work style is mostly taking responsibility unlike in India "I just work here attitude" Indian IT Engineers are Smart but they are Lazy.
