Green building materials are composed of renewable, rather than nonrenewable resources. Green materials are environmentally responsible because impacts are considered over the life of the product.
Now a days quite a lot of attention has been focused on the issue of green building materials.  So,how do you find green products for your project?

Currently, what are green building materials are available ?

Products Made up of Salvaged, Recycled, or Agricultural Waste Content

idea posted by Venkatesh M Warehouse Manager, Larsen and Toubro

Salvaged, Recycled, or Agricultural Waste Content these are the materials used to produce a building product which is  key determinant of green. For eg Many salvaged materials used in buildings (bricks, millwork, framing lumber, plumbing fixtures, and period hardware).

Ash bricks which are made using Ash generated in modern coal based power stations (a salvaged material) and water cured (thus saving on fuel for firing of traditioanal bricks and saving on corresponding carbon dioxide emmission) is a good green construction material to be used for green buildings for leed rating / certification.

All construction works within 100 kms of a coal based thermal power stations are also under mandate to use ash based bricks / blocks and other building products as per the notification dated 27.08 2003 issued by Mionistry of Environment and Forest.

Indirect Adiabatic air conditioning

idea posted by Darshi Dhaliwal Principal Consultant , Climate Control Bureau

Indirect Adiabatic air conditioning  technology offers lowest specific energy consumption. It also offers 30% or more fresh air to exceed the IAQ norms for LEED Buildings.

The technology enables Building -Ambient connectivity to  make full use of free cooling even during hot summers .Does not use any chemical refrigerant for cooling.

The Air Handling Units based on this technology , are now available in India.Intersted ? you can have a look at www.unidyne-energy.com

The  Air Handling Units reduce operating costs by 50-60% and may also reduce the capex ,depending on the project location.Pay back is always  less than 2 years.

Green building, sustainability & LEED

idea posted by raju Design Engineer, Atkins

As far i know in india all materials and buildings are made of lessenergy, waste, reusable etc., in the past traditionally and present too.

The terms green building, green building materials, sustainability, LEED certification are indirectly or directly related the use of lessenergy, waste, reusable etc., in the process of building and in its use for the purpose. All these related to envrionmental and ecology

There is no need for green building or LEED certifications for most of building, its just to increase the project cost and making fools by western countries in terms of sustainability, envrionmental and ecology

Inspiaration from Tradiational building methods must be adopted .

idea posted by rakeshbhatnagar GM Projects., wig brothers india pvt.ltd.

Tradiational building methods should be adopted for green building,We may incoorporate some new material but depending upon the area ancient buildings were very close to green buildings. So inspiaration from tradiational methods must be a better idea .It may vary from place to place .

Green buildings need of environment

idea posted by Shirish Nadkarni Factory Head, Dicitex Decor Pvt Ltd

Is cement, concrete debris easily disposable ? When we are constructing multi storeyed buildings, are we thinking what will be impact of tonnes of concrete rubble ,debris that will be generated after century when that building will be dismantled by next generations? Our forefathers used stones & lime combination to construct buildings. Now when new building is constructed in place of old one ,stones, wood can become easily recycleable as a part of environment but what about concrete?New builders should think over it.

The main focus should be on reuseability of material & resources such as water harvesting , reduce polution of night aura by providing shaded street lights , alternate fuel (such as elec. & battery operated vehicles)

Using of fibre bricks, LED & optic fibres for natural ventilation.

idea posted by Muralidhara Ashok construction planning engineer, Ahluwalia Contracts (India) limited
using the fibre bricks will result in the soil seapage which maintains GWL without hampering the structural stability. LED & Optic fibres can be a very useful tools where you want natural light at the places where it not possible (in the inner portions of the buildig) which adds the benifit to the green building. And also it is useful in conservation of energy and saving of conventional energy.

renewable sources of energy and materials

There is no real sense of the green, green as far as possible only to consider renewable energy and materials. But what is truly renewable sources of energy and materials

I agree with you anant. It is the best method...
I agree with Mr.mohammad and  I think there is no such empirical formula so you can spend a reasonable amount on site investigation....
