Recently in India, Trade Fairs and Conference International (TFCI), a leading producer of premiere business & technology events, organized a summit - ‘DataCenter 2009, focuing on the green initiatives in Data Centers.

The objective of the conference was to provide a holistic approach to the enterprises on drivers that can help build greener data centers.

Topics covered at the conference emphasized on critical factors such as people, technologies , processes, data center facilities, value proposition of the business, and how to effectively

Companies like Sify Technologies, Wipro, EMC Corporation, Dell, APC, Hewlett-Packard, Netmagic Solutions, Tyco Electronics, IBM, Hitachi, Airtel, Red Hat and Extreme Networks participated in the conference.

Let's have an interesting discussion around on the same subject here. I hope you guys will participate.......

Please give your ideas on how companies can have a green data center...........

Thermal management

idea posted by shashikant Banquet Sales Executive/ Manager, APW President Systems Ltd

Thermal management inside the server rack will ensure equal cool air disrtribution and that will minimise on energy cost and will help to save on energy and finally that wll create the green DC

Sir, I understand the terminology but CFD is realy difficult to explain in single line. I am simply with you please sned me some study material on this to have more clarity on this.

It is the only sensible thing to create cold aisle  isolation to save considerable energy.

It is possible to  remove sensible heat without using expensive refrigerative cooling. see some examples at www.unidyne-energy.com

Optimising the temperature and Installing monitoring systems

idea posted by sumitra dutta Consultant, XYZ

Almost 40 percent of energy that flows into a data center goes towards power and cooling solutions. So raise the temperature in the data center as most data centers are run too cold, and raising the temperature by a few degrees often will not affect the equipment. And also according to a survey conducted on IT departments has revealed that IT depts don't even pay their own energy bills. So its better to install electric monitoring systems in place so that one can see the use of electricity go down due to the high rates they have to deal with.......

Recycled materials and Alternative source of power

idea posted by Radhakrishna Marar Business Analyst, Oracle

Going green is a great way to help your company financially while helping the world ecologically. One can use recycled or low-emission materials to build the data centre.Solar or wind power can be used to run the facilities.

Scalable or Modular systems

idea posted by Samir Das Tech Architect, Infosys

Green data centers not only help in using less energy and save more money but it also provides a healthier work environment for employees and help to build positive relations with the surrounding community. Many states offer tax incentives to companies that build a green data center.
Scalable or modular systems can be used so that only the needed energy capacity will be used and in this way wastage of energy can be controlled.Synthetic white rubber roof can also be installed in order to dissipate external heat.

Few points...

  1. Low footprint.. (maximum utilisation of space/racks)
  2. Consolidation of servers
  3. upgrading to energy efficient servers
  4. Effective power management
  5. Installation of high efficient power supplies.
  6. Follow the standards.. energy star products

Reducing the cooling energy

idea posted by Darshi Dhaliwal Principal Consultant , Climate Control Bureau

One of the key issues to green a data center  will be to reduce its carbon foot print.Data centers use 1 to 5 MWe  and major part of this goes towards dissipating the heat generated by the electronic equipment.Mostly the connected load for HVAC  exceeds  the  electronic eqipment loads in the data center.

Some of the reasons are as follows :

  1. No containment of low /High temperature  bays
  2. Use of refrigerative sytem to remove sensible heat.
  3. Mindless use of redundancy
  4. No CFD analysis of internal  air flow and temperature  profiles
  5. Mixed Flow Ventilation, Poor use of underfloor ventilation
  6. No economisers / No Free cooling used.profiles
  7. Most data centers use outdated information on temperature set points.
  8. ASHRAE recommend 27 deg inlet instead of 18 deg C
  9. It allows out let from the racks to reach 35 deg C

So g+ is trying hard to survice now we have brand pages on g+ too. To add to this they have added game apps to lure people. but are there enough people to make this work? Will game apps do any good to g+?
Yes sir the product is really good but it is designed for different purpose. It is mostly used for military purpose.
This might sound odd to many but yes laptops are not tough. They can break and get damaged and you will regret if this happens. So the best thing to do is to protect it the best way possible. There is just one laptop   Tough book which will not...
