It has become very common for youngsters and even kids to have depression these days. I neevr knew what is depression till I heard of it. But today that is not the case. Today everyones life is stressful. So how to destress? How to fight with this demon names depression?

It is important to find the cause of the depression. The root cause. One can take help from others to do this. After discovering the cause one can find the ways to work it out. Depression is all in mind so it must be just taken out from the mind.

I truly support joydeep sir on his part of the discussion.....our customs, cast , religious practices are the root causes for depression.....Truly there are many things in life that are beyond medical supervision.....had medical supervision been very strong there would have been no instances of teens commiting suicides....had political environment been very clean providing good employment opportunities to our youth , there would have been no instances of depression leading youths to join the terrorist groups and lead to the horrible Mumbai like blasts....had parents were not indulged in earning a lot and lot of money , getting more and more greedy ,ultimately forgetting what their child want.....and the child all alone , no one to talk to , gets into alcoholism, smoking , like habits out of depression.......so the root cause of depression lies in our HOME....VERY DEEP ROOTED.

Depression as my comprehension is unable to function as per designed efficiency.

Aggression is going overboard like over clocking a micro-processor.

Fight the demon depression; corruption; price rise; capitalist etc.

Lets look back in history Ashok was a great fighter, so was Genghis Khan, Napoleon, Hitler, Saddam, Osama, Prabhakaran etc., Ashok left a Pillar in Delhi, Hitler put a bullet in his head Saddam was hanged by his countrymen, Osama fed to the sharks.

People who don’t learn to live above things happen to them. Life as a function provides certain set of energies capabilities to every living form, in human’s the spectrum is very large something like windows 7 premium which needs a 64 bit processor and a GB of ram, no; or like Apple no. It’s the most versatile, and when such species are unable to express, impact, to produce desired results depression sets in; the opposite would be aggression. Due to the existence of few aggressive people a huge number of people become depressed in our society.

Our customs culture cast system religious practices political environment contribute to depression leading to Maoist like separatist movements.

So Bindu the point is (as per your name Bindu) depression is not a demon it’s a symptom of malfunction, some causes are quite deep rooted, beyond the scope of pshycratist, psychologist and medicines.

Yes Bindu and change of place will help diminish the depression totally. A doctors advice may be needed in some case. In today's fast world one gets depressed very easily seeing some body else. Today's world is materialistic world and every body wants to be Bill Gates.

Thanks Joydeep for referral. Depression is not new to Indian civilization, as Joydeep suggested. We all know about Chanakya, being a Brahmin, how he worked his way to create a Maurya Dynasty. A Brief about his achievement would help understand how to get rid of depression. Chanakya was born with a complete set of teeth, a sign that he would become king, which is inappropriate for a Brahmin like Chanakya. Chāṇakya's teeth were therefore broken and it was prophesied that he will rule through another. The Nanda King throws Chānakya out of his court, prompting Chānakya to swear revenge. Chānakya searches for one worthy for him to rule through. Chānakya encounters a young Chandragupta Maurya who is a born leader even as a child. Chanakya established monarchial system in ancient historical times in India. He may be main architect to groom a child, but his means to reach power were manipulative and secretive. Chānakya's initial attempt to overthrow Nanda fails, whereupon he comes across a mother scolding her child for burning himself by eating from the middle of a bun or bowl of porridge rather than the cooler edge. Chāṇakya realizes his initial strategic error and, instead of attacking the heart of Nanda territory, slowly chips away at its edges. Chānakya changed his alliance with the mountain king Parvata due to his obstinacy and non-adherence to the principles of the treaty as agreed. Chānakya enlists the services of a fanatical weaver to rid the kingdom of rebels. Chānakya adds poison to the food eaten by Chandragupt Maurya, now king, in order to make him immune.[9][citation needed] Unaware, Chandragupta feeds some of his food to his queen, who is in her ninth month of pregnancy. In order to save the heir to the throne, Chānakya cuts the queen open and extracts the foetus, who is named Bindusara because he was touched by a drop (bindu) of blood having poison.Chānakya's political rivalry with Subandhu leads to his death. Chanakya was a shrewd observer of nature. Once, it is said that Mauryan forces had to hide in a cave. There was no food, and the soldiers were starving.They could not come out of the cave either, as there was a threat to their lives. Chanakya saw an ant taking a grain of rice, whereas, there was no sign of food or grain anywhere. Moreover, the rice grain was cooked. He ordered the soldiers to search and they found that their enemies had been dining under the cave. Indeed, they were eating at the ground floor. India, the most depressed country

A study based on the World Health Organization’s World Mental Health Survey Initiative has said that India has the highest rate of major depression in the world.

The study, ‘Cross-national epidemiology of DSM-IV major depressive episode,’ based on interviews of nearly 90,000 subjects across 18 countries with different income levels, was published in the peer-reviewed journal BMC Medicine by Biomed Central.

The average lifetime rates of depression, according to the study, were found to be 14.6 per cent in ten high income countries, and 11.1 percent in eight low- to middle-income countries. But lifetime incidents of what was identified as Major Depressive Episodes (MDE), were highest among Indians at 35.9 percent, while China was at the lowest at 12 per cent.

Average percentage of MDE was, however, considerably higher in high-income countries at 28.1 percent, compared to 19.8 percent in the low- to middle-income countries.

 The study interviewed subjects on the basis of the WHO Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) technique. Respondents were first screened on the basis of three “stem questions” for depression—sadness/depressed mood, feelings of discouragement, and loss of interest lasting several days or longer.

Those who endorsed any one of these questions were put through a questionnaire to detect MDE. To be positive for MDE, a respondent had to qualify for five of the “nine cardinal symptoms,” including indicators in appetite, sleep, mood, lack of concentration and tendency of suicidal thoughts.

The lead author of the study is Dr Evelyn Bromet, Department of Psychiatry, State University of New York at Stony Brook, co-authored by Dr Irwin Hwang and Dr Nancy A. Sampson at the Department of Healthcare Policy at the Harvard Medical School. The India representative of the study is Dr Jagdish Kaur from the Directorate General of Health Services.

Countries such as the US, China, Japan, India, Brazil, Mexico, Ukraine and Spain, Germany, Lebanon, Mexico, and South Africa have been included in the study.

According to the study, the average age for onset of depression was 25.7 in the high-income and 24.0 in low- to middle-income countries. The female-male ratio was about 2:1 all over the world.

The study which finds “links between social factors and depression” states that “the strongest demographic correlate in high-income countries was being separated from a partner, and in low- to middle-income countries, was being divorced or widowed.”

In support of people who are under depression,following tips may help.

Please do not drink alcohol or use illegal drugs. These substances can make depression worse and might lead to thoughts of suicide.

Take your medication exactly as your doctor instructed. Ask your doctor about the possible side effects and what you should do if you have any. Learn to recognize the early signs that your depression is getting worse.

       1. Get more exercise

       2.Maintain good sleep habits

       3.Seek out activities that bring you pleasure

       4.Volunteer or get involved in group activities

       5.Talk to someone you trust about how you are feeling

example:  'A' is a kid and 'A' gets beaten up by his classmates, 'B','C',and 'D'. 'A' fights back, beating up B,C,D. That night 'A" gets punished by his parents because B's parents complained that their child was beaten up by 'A'. 'A' is told strictly that he should not fight with any kid, no matter what the issue was. Next day, 'A' is beaten up again by B,C and D. This time 'A' doesn't fight back. This goes on for years and 'A' slowly slips into depression.

In this case, is the child 'A' materialistic?. Is 'A' depressed because he has high expectations in life?

This can also be seen even among grown ups .....in offices,at the place where you work etc etc Today, bullying is an important reason for most cases of depression.

depression is not compulsory! how it can be ? its just the result of rat race with a approach in life to blindly follow others.a person should find his inner instinct to follow his inner navigation system in life. we all have a specific purpose in life which is the cause of our existance. you can live ur life with being fully successful and even not depressed its all about self management there are many examples.plz take granted ur success not depression. Most of the time the we are thinking what wrong or mistakes we did in our past and what will happen in our future. The present is what you are living and enjoy for yourself most of it by facing it or accepting it. Thinking options for the situations is the best solutions. Divert your mind by playing, watching movies, trekking, going to gym, swimming, get together with friends for chatting and enjoying but do whatsoever you like for your mind for enjoyment except going for some sort of bad habits or getting addicted.

The power of intuitive thinking, judging, measuring, calibrating, abstracting, etc. all human function which animals are devoid off, animals have three broad function feed defend breed. Can thay write blogs??

Diverting or bypassing is no good remedy to resolve depression, why I say so, go to any govt office in India everyone is very keen to bypass resulting to low output way out bribery, why I choose the government office as it does not have an owner. Government official are the most depressed people, they are paid yet work stagnation happens, which is depression that is they are unable to deliver to the designed work efficiency.

This is depression!!

This is beyond the scope of pshycratist, psychologist and medicines.

One man cannot take care of all his needs wants fantasy. He has to dependend on others. We have the most complex dependency structure.

There is no known linearity  in what is "wanted or needed" one man's need may be others fantasy!!

Now a days every person is effected by this disease in some way or the other. Too much expectations from oneself and just building up negative thoughts in blank mind accelerates the process of depression. I think most of the people are suffering from virtual depression these days as they are just comparing everything from the next person. A slight change in your attitude and way of seeing the things can help in solving all the depression problems. A regular work outs can bring a lot of differnece in your way of thinking. After being declared unfit for further sea service during my job as a marine engineer I lost my job as I had become handicapped person after an accident on board. But you can always energize yourself by your positive thinking and you get lot of positive feeling from a good morning walkor short work outs at gym, PRANAYAM helps in building lot of positive thinking .You need to make your mind healthy. Just depression can be treted with exercise, motivation, self help, meditation etc. But if you see a psychologist n she diagnoses, then know tha you have a mental problem due to which depression arises. The cure is medication, proper diet, work life balance, and detachment from any excesses.

Today, depression disease is spread widely in young as well as job/business field. We are created depression itself and we have to require avoid such things. In education, parents are doing lot of pressure on study, boss are doing pressure on executive for getting business, things are going costly for people day by day, income problem, family problem etc. Due to depression, many negative thoughts are entered in our mind and its results also getting negative... Depression is a kind of mental ailment. Those who suffers from this exhibits a very low mood, which pervades all aspects of life, and an inability to experience pleasure in activities that were formerly enjoyed. Stress of work for the working class, stress of family affairs for those in the middle and old age people, academic performance, love affairs and others may cause depress in teenagers. They try to keep themselves aloof from others. Numerous thoughts kills them. Family members should take care of them. They need to be socialised. Sometimes treatment is required. Meditation proved to be good effect to keep the peace of mind.

I have heard of intelligent humans with depression who forfeits days medicine commit suicide. Suicide is a neuro psychotic illness where a person directs his or her energy outwardly at someone and when the delusion fails the energy gets directed back to th individual and he or she commits suicide. It is better to not to direct ones energy at someone rather be simple and gentle as nature is to avoid stressful life.

Depression cannot be easily boxed into a mundane definition - I am sure psychologists & psychoanalysts will agree. It is not easy to work out of it - it is a condition of grave implications. Finding the cause is not the solution - that was only the trigger. Sustained treatment, support from near & dear ones and understanding from friends will go a long way in healing the afflicted.

We a ll have ups and downs in life its part of human nature some have more than usual amount of their shares of high and lows ,best it to accept you are depressed ,notice your low patterns did some incident ,person or condition trigger it off once you know avoid ,ignore or just move away from trigger .But the most important is coming out of it as fast as you go in so best thing is know yourself what uplifts you mood ,music,workout,cooking,movies or communications just go for it ,do not wait ....and see how your mood lifts up and depression becomes a thing of yesterday

Try to identify any situations that have contributed to your depression. When you know what's got you feeling blue and why, talk about it with a caring friend. Talking is a way to release the feelings and to receive some understanding. If there's no one to tell, pouring your heart out to a journal works just as well. Once you air out these thoughts and feelings, turn your attention to something positive. Take action to solve problems. Ask for help if you need it. Feeling connected to friends and family can help relieve depression.

takeout some time and do what you want to do, it always helps, people say do yog, mediation, mucis and etc etc, what if the person doesn't like that,when you force your self to do some work , when you start to compromise in your life, that's when stress enters. 

So for living you have to do it all,

but once in day, week or month juts take a time out, and try to live your dream, that helps lot

Arjuna, of the Gita, faced this. It was a neurological, psychological, cum psychiatric depression. Every human has to expereince this in order to find his tru self. Follow the scripture, question, ask, answer,and apply. According to me, it is out of vice that we get these things.

If you are expereincing depression, it could also be because of some oppression or depression. Many ppl, especially doctors say that it is due to oneself, and self inflicted torture, masochism, but it is actually a conspiracy, or me against the world.!! Like Julius Caesar was not even spared by his closest copmatriot, Brutus!!! So, blind ambition, agression, manipulation, etc, will meet with opposition and the tendency to power down!!!

If you don't want to find a cure, just be with it!! Be with depression, disease, poverty, insanity, disillusionment, greed, and the 5 deadly sins!!! Why do anything to improve? Be whatever comes your way, what a drifter's philospohy!!!
