as a doctor this is what i experinece. my patinet feels doctor is charging me more, also asking expensive medicines so she must be having some tie up with the drug company ..etc. doctor feels if there is any complications then patinet will blame the doctor manhandle the doctor , start damaging the hsopital property, will not pay the bills. but during practise when a practitioner practises in good faith of the patient both the patinet and the doctor eventually have a very cordial relationship. few bad experinces cannot spoil the good will of th fraternity. knowlegeble patinet si welcome.... when the get knowledge from the net it is easier to explain and when they are mentally prepared its easier to convince. so patinets being moreconcious is a welcome sign

Yes lack of faith and confidence on each other. Doctors are not treated the way expectations are laid on them.
It is a fallout of OVERLY COMMERCIAL attitudes by both Patient and Doctors. What happens when doctors are overcharged by all and sundry when they are the customer? It is a complex chain starting the money and time that goes into achieving the qualification and expectations laid both as a customer and a doctor.
Its very unfortunate but true that the doctors here keeps promoting all the drugs which gets banned all over the world like in case of Drug Eluting Stents which are so hyped over the bare metal stents but than its biggest drawback is that a patient with DES is more prone to MI and restenosis than a patient with bare metal stents and that's the reason its use has reduced in the western world (anybody who is interested to know about this can get all the details in the article published in new york times) but you will neither get these informations here in the print media nor is a doctor going to tell you about it. The only reason is the huge amount of money they get as commission.
After 8 years of experience in health care industry i feel that in most of the cases its the doctor's who are at fault they dont talk to relatives about the cost, they overcharge their patients, they prescribe them with expensive medicines obviously only because of their commissions and too worsen the situation they dont talk to the relatives when the patient starts deterioting.

While consumer awareness is on the rise ever since the CPA was introduced in medical profession, there are still a lot of loopholes in our system. The organizations like the MCI and IMA have miniscule powers to bring the quacks and non qualified people to task, the law also has not been able to eradicate this menace. As a result, there is a rising trend of mutual mistrust between the patient and the doctor. If stringent rules and regulations like standardized treatment guidelines and adherence to rules is ensured,we can tackle the problem at hand to a large extent.Going to the grassroots of it,most of the problems arise due to a lack of communication between the beneficiaries and the providers of care. Its high time that the hospitals and other healthcare organizations realize the need of counsellers, medico social workers and customer care services to bridge the ever increasing gap between the doctors and patients.

Doctor patient relationships can be improved through only one route - patient empowerment, only this will bring back the trust between them. The main thing is patients feel they will get conned by doctors. Through word-of-mouth patients have come to know how doctors get 'targets' by hospital administrators on no . of surgeries to perform; how pharma companies give targets to doctors etc. And the worst thing is that bad news gets round faster than the good news. A few decades back, the auto car mechanic was the most famous 'conman' who would bank on the customer's ignorance and 'fleece' them. Today, unfortunately, the medical care system suffers from this 'mistrust syndrome'. To bring back the excitement in to the medical care system, bring in transparency and ensure access of information to the patient. Patient outcomes need to be done through collaboration between doctor and patient. The doctor needs to understand he or she can't 'own the patient'. |

The reason that there is such a mistrust is lack of accountability for the doctors, there are very few cases where docs are held accountable even in negligence. But in the day to day practice a doctor is a law to himself/herself..whatever a doctor chooses to do with his/her patient he/she can do as there are really no strict rules or protocols implemented in our country, and due to this people-patient often feel helpless when they are at the receiving end. There should be a regulatory agency/body , a Govt or an NGO which can watch over the erring doctors because consumer courts are sought only after there is loss of faith & trust.

But again if the doctor has to consult the NGO's or any other instituition or person than at the end of the day its the patient who is going to suffer. Again how can u deny from the fact that both the doctor and the instituition wont patch up because there is much of money flowting in and around

Nowadays you she more and more people are going for surgries after fractures because the orthpaedic doctors advice them that if they go for surgery than they dont have to move around with the plasters for months on and in turn the doctors get a huge amount as thier fees and other sources whereas if the patients go for plasters they only spend only a small amount of money on thier treatment Infact one of my friends relative was adviced hip replacement due to fracture after his fall in his bathroom whereas the patient went to the toilet after about an hour of his fall and got admitted only the next day and had to spend a few lakhs on his treatment |

The reasons for all this frustration are complex. I think doctors, facing
declining reimbursements and higher costs, have only minutes to spend
with each patient. News reports about medical errors and drug industry
influence have increased patients’ distrust. And the rise of
direct-to-consumer drug advertising and medical Web sites have taught
patients to research their own medical issues and made them more
skeptical and inquisitive.

I think doctors used to be the only source for information on medical problems
and what to do, but now their knowledge is demystified .When patients come in with preconceived ideas about what
doctors should do, they do get perturbed at doctor's for not listening. Some people are not satisfied
until the doctor's do what they want.
