Small reservoirs at frequent intervals in low lying areas will help storing flood water and also the water table will get distributed uniformly. |

In addition to building of small resorvoirs .Cleaning of tanks and ponds.
Systems to divert excess water for storage.
Check dams designed to reduce the flow of water into main streams of rivers when floods occur.
well organised co-ordination between the states to regulate the flowand to plan inadvance for water management toavoid floods. or atleast to reduce fury.

I would like to start this with a basic step, which is Afforestation. Afforestation of the flood plains must be encouraged as trees not only absorb rainfall water but also obstruct its flow to the rivers. Thus trees will control the flow of water as well as the flood. |

I dont think this is an ecological measure, but an important measure in flood management. Advancement in construction technology has also had a negative impact on flood control as large scale construction activities have started to take place on the flood plains. Construction activities on the flood plains should be stopped altogether. The flood plains, being very fertile, can be used for economic activities like agriculture. |
