I think this is where we are missing out, with no option for them we are making it all the more difficult for them to come out from poverty, in this regard I really think what Mr. Muhammed yunus the Nobel laureate from Bangladesh is doing a wonderful job in assisting poor with Microfinance with his Grameen bank, and I also had the pleasure of reading a similar article on toostep Take banks to the poor, I think this will give them the platform to come out from poverty and improve their life style. |

just providing financial services doesn't matter in eradicating poverty in our country. there is a need to provide the required infrastructure for them so that they could be able to stand on their own.quality education should be given at no cost, quality food should be provided and a way to live.we have to create opportunities for them to blossom.politicians cant do that.we the citizens of India should feel responsible for our country and do something even a penny for our country's sake from everyone will make a lot for them.
I really agree with Mr. Santosh's Idea and Mr. Sabeel and Madhukar for their wonderful thoughts here....yes I too agree that corruption is somewhere is responsible for so much poverty that is there in the country....with this there is too much imbalance interms of ration of rich and poor that are there in the country.
And would like to thank everybody who have participated in this, but we also should take these things outside and try to implement them, but then that is the difficult part here, at the end it all comes down to implementing things, which is not happening at the moment.

We are creating loads of wealth but the fact of the matter is only a handful of people getting advantages of our free economy. The need of the hour is to bridge the gap between haves & have-nots. |

This is an extremely intelligent option. I believe that distribution is the key. WHo decides the wages?? minimum wages?? Do we have a law that fights for the labor who toils on the road fitting the water pipes, fitting the telephone cables... We in fact tend to abuse them. I think you have a good case here Ujval!! :)

India is poor and growth is slower because all our processes are just transient in nature and not permenent. To create a permanenet effect for all the policies that are enacted must be "stable" and "efficient" in the normal scale of things, like depending on Economic fundamentals. Governmet policies must be such that it "rewards" human initiatives. Those who are not initiated also need have a life, that is if you show initiative you can be wealth and if not still one need not be penalised, still one should be afforded a decent life. For this to happen a whole gamut of change need be undertaken in our way of creating policies and executing them. Financial sector policies, housing policies, credit policies, infrastructural policies, social policies, educational policies, environmental policies etc; etc; need be framed for stability and efficiency which is tha above criterion, "life for everyone and nothing less". |
2
|
To put everything above in a Nutshell, the policies the government enact must be checked for Scientific validity, which means one must ask the question whether the policies are "causal" to the outcomes expected from the policy or is it mere "wishful thinking". That is whether the policy is going to create the expected output or outcome. Second question that need be asked is whether the policy is "fallsifiable" that is under what conditions the policy is going to fail or not deliver. Third the "time" frame under which the policy will work, whether it is perpetual or transient. Fourth whether what all "changes" can occur to the outcomes.
Once our policies are tested for "scientific validity" then outcomes expected like poverty alieviation will occur. Our policies post independence were not tested for scietific validity. Every rupee spend from budget must be tested to see whether the outcomes are occuring or otherwise they cannot be scientific rather arbitrary and vauge policies.
Once we don't do this then our policies tend to be irrational meaning our actions obsures the objectives or objectives cannot be infered from our actions and poverty and infefficiency get bred.
The basis of policies of Government must incorporate "stability" and balance for citizen. For this the government must ensure'
1) freedom of Choice
2) expectations of the ciizen must be maintained.
3) there must be "mutuality" in trnansactions where the idiosyncratic risks involved in transactions need be shared equaly by both parties.
4)Academic infrastructure and standards must be high
6)Environment must be efficient which the above will provide along with infrastructure
6)Social norms must be tightened which the above can provide
7) Financial and consumer markets must be stable which some of the above will provide. Banking products must be widened, there must be more financial products, credit products to have both Money Market(less than one year maturity) and Fianncial market(moer than one year maturity) available to commerce and citizen
8) Housing policies must be a norm for the government.
9)Social contracts and "just" society norms must be fixed for citizen which some of the above will provide.
10)Health care must be improved
11)Paretto optimal checks must be rendered on all policies enacted by government.
12)Last must not the least, "certainity" must be maintained in all activities of government and citizen so that there will be lesser shocks and turmoils in citizen's lives.
Once these are taken care off then, the environment wil stabilize and citizen will feel normal enough to be intiated and poverty will come down.

Well,I really don't know how to put my idea through so that it reaches everyone on this site, anyhow I'll try my best. Our Country Ranks 84 out of 180 countries in the Corruption Index of this year i.e 2009,we are even more corrupted than our rival i.e Pakistan. The issue that was roaring in the market during the elections this year was The amount of money corrupt politicians, IAS, IPS, etc of India have in their exclusive Swiss bank Account awaiting to be used by there posterity(Future generations) is around $1500 billion. This amount is about 13 times larger than the country’s foreign debt. With this amount 45 crore poor people can get Rs 1,00,000 each. This huge amount has been appropriated from the people of India by exploiting and betraying them. Once this huge amount of money comes back to India, the entire foreign debt can be repaid in a fraction of time. After paying the entire foreign debt, we will have surplus amount, almost 12 times larger than the foreign debt. If this surplus amount is invested in earning interest, the amount of interest will be more than the annual budget of the Central government. So even if all the taxes are abolished, then also the Central government will be able to maintain the country very comfortably. I don't know how many Indians know this reality, but if we really want to exempt poverty word from our country then we can come forward and use our vote power. Vote only to those Politicians who you think are well educated and suitable to become leaders. We are young and well educated so we should think about this problem. I want to write more but I'll stop as if I continue I don't know how much I can. So,the famous quote Last But Not The Least. Thank You. |

Divert funds from places of worship and relegious rituals to build infrastructure and facilities
|
|
In this country we have all the money for spending on relegious rituals and to build temples but not for building infrastructure and facilities that are required for improving economic status of people. There is also a need to reduce our population by adopting one child per family. As a first step Government should stop spending money on temples. Relegion is purely a personal matter and All departments in Government connected with relegion should be disbanded and funds of such departments should be diverted towards employment oriented programmes. |
1
|
Most of the funds collected at religious temples and ashrams become unused. All big temple trusts should start primary schools attached to their temples/ashrams and spend the amount. Government should restrict investment in assets by these bodies and encourage spending thru schools and hospitals which are the need of the hour in India

A team wins when all players start to play for the team, and not for their individual self. India will start to prosper when all keep the interest of the country foremost, and self gain as secondary.

our government have failed to educate everyone so as to make them employable .in fact ,there is no dearth of people who besides of being equipped with necessary qualifications are still unemployed .so in order to reduce it ,our government and private organisations should step forward and come up with traning programs to train unskilled or uneducated masses for industry specific jobs (manual) generate jobs and hence an income sources for many families. |

We just have to believe in our own actions. We must stop blaming our political system our bureaucracy but must start asking Questions directly to them “What are we Doing????
How many more years we want to keep complaining about ourselves?? I remember one fantastic motivating video by Times Group which featured Shah Rukh Khan who says “It is important to convert this land of Philosophers into nation of DO ers’ Even after more than 60 years of independence, we have reached to the stage of being called “just a Emerging economy, or a sleeping tiger or Potential Superpower”
As a working class, we too must share Social responsibility to change this, instead of just getting into debates, face to face, online opinions & surveys. Since long we are doing up to this only.
Guys my words might seem harsh but I believe they are true. I am giving the link of that “DO” video just for all of you.
Now don’t run after debates only. DO something about it!!!!!

Prasadji , Ihave given thought to ur idea. It is thought provoking.
Sugar at Rs. 50/- Previously I used to buy 2-3 kgs at a time but my wife is asking me to buy the same in 2 to 3 instalments. Being in middle class I am feeling the pinch what about poor. Even if somebody can't afford since it is necessity they should buy. Solution :Sell necessities through PDS Public distribution System to poor .
Gold At Historical high: It is diversion of investment since real estate is not strong enough to invest. It is safe investment because of worldwide recession.
Real Estate: The real estate feild once restricting to Urban elite and interacting with only urban elite is now talking about Affordable houses, and affordability.
Lot of money insystem: Lot of wealth ( Money as well as other resouces) is available in India as well as through out the world(God has given this to Human Community) it all depends on how the wealth is properly channelised and utilised for the betterment of each and everybody.
Education: Education to make a living out of available resoures is the need of the hour. Necessary reforms in education to earn bread easily either through self employment or job. For this Govt, Industry, Ngos, Educational Institutions, Society(parents) should study and evoleve necessary reforms.
Education and Health are most important factors requiring immediate attention for the upliftment of poor.
I thank u very much for this thought provoking posting and making me remember Netaji Subhash Chandrabose ' Don't think what country has given to you think what u have given to country'
a
Whoever told that every 3rd Indian is poor? think again.
Sugar at Rs 50 and people are still buying it.
Gold at historical high and people are still buying it.
If Indians are poor then why should the real-estate prices sky-rocket in all areas urban as well as rural.
There is lots of cash/money in the system for everyone live. Sufferers are really from uneducated lot.

The steps to reduce poverty in India be it through Subsidies in food fuel electricity or govt sponsored education, healthcare or direct step like farm loan waiver and rural employment guarantee scheme I believe have not been UN-SUBSTANTIAL.Expectation would have been in 60 years to have eliminated poverty to a large extent. Except the fact that these very people below the poverty line are the single largest contributors to India`s exploding population. The fact that they have the highest growth rate and are growing exponentially. The fact that they Continue to Have More Children even when the EARLIER ONES HAVE NO FOOD TO EAT, THEY THEMSELVES ARE MALNOURISHED,HAVE NO PROPER SHELTER OR SAVINGS. One can argue with me whatever. But the fact is- Poverty Does Not Force Anybody To HAVE more children even when they cant take care of the existing ones does it?IT IS THE MINDSET ......AN ANTIQUE ONE-(THAT WAS FORMED WHEN SURVIVAL RATE OF CHILDREN WAS VERY LOW IN OUR COUNTRY) THAT NEEDS TO BE CHANGED. MY POINT IS-just trying to feed people or giving employment for 15-20 days will never work as a LONG TERM SOLUTION.These efforts have to be coupled with 1.FAMILY COUNSELLING -The ADVANTAGES OF WHY A SMALLER AND MORE MANAGEABLE FAMILY IS MORE DESIRABLE.HOW THEY CAN LIVE A HAPPIER AND MORE FULFILLING LIFE-MUST BE EDUCATED TO THEM THROUGH GENTLE METHODS. 2.PROMOTE BIRTH CONTROL MEASURES THROUGH NON-INVASIVE AND REVERSIBLE METHODS using family health initiatives anti-malnutrition drives etc as a complete health package. 3.ENCOURAGE PEOPLE INTO ADOPTING FAMILY COUNCELLING FOR THEMSELVES THROUGH- Maintaining nationwide Database of people their family size financial health,Giving financial or other incentives.Through media,Literacy drives etc. |

People sitting in Ivory towers and the rich cannot determine how to eradicate poverty in this country. Every idea given by them results in making the poor poorer and remain slaves of the rich. If you provide earning power or money directly to the poor. They spend that in giving offering to god because they think god heard their cries and favoured them and it is their duty to repat god. They think rich have become rich only because they offered money to god. look at Thirupathi Thimmappa " Lord Venkateshwara. He is very near to Rich people. If you pay Rs 1 crore you can see him from very near. If you pay few crores you can always see him whenever you want. Recently one of the Karnataka Minister offered several crore worth of ornament. Result is Supreem Court lifted the ban on operating mines, so that he can continue to earn from the mine. Lord had made him minister because he shares his wealth with Thimmappa. This is what poor thinks. So he will offer what ever you give him to God so that god will return him the wealth many times more than what he has offered. When they get money they first think of their unfinished duties to their family like performing marraiages and other ceremonies and since they have money at least this time they should invite all relatives andfriends for the ceremonies. All temples and relegious Institutions are collecting wealth and storing in the form of Silver Chariot, Golden Chariot, Golden ornaments or jackets for god, not on educating the society. They also spent a minor portion of the funds thus collected on building educational Institutions and Hospitals so that they can get simultaneously more money and and Government honours (Rajyotsava Awards and Padma Awards) for partly shouldering the responsiblity of Government and saving the government money for spending on Ministers foreign tours, Health treatments abroad, cars, Plans and helicopters for their use. Since independance we have been spending money on buiding homes for poor, providing training to earn livelyhood, releiving farmers from the debt burden. Have been spending money on improving agriculture production. If you add up the number of homes built, or free seddlings distributed to farmers or the number of people trained under various schemes you will be surprised to find that we have already built more homes than needed, we have trained more people than the number of youth unemplyed in this country already. Just verify from the governments own data for example Number of free seedlings of Cashew nut distributed from third plan period you will find by this time we should have become a net exporter of raw cashew nut. But the fact is we Import raw cashew nuts from African countries, and South America even today to the extent of 50% of our processing factories needs. Vietnam which entered the picture recently will be overtaking us soon and Cote d'Ivorie has now become no 2 and bipassed us in raw nut production. Very soon they will over take us in processing facility capacity and we may have to shut down our cashewnut processing factories. Instead of Building steel factories we are exporting ores to China. China is preserving its own ore. We are exporting granite to China instead of exporting finished products. The result will be we will be exhausting our natural resources very fast and China will overtake us soon. The next generation will become slaves to the rest of world. If you consider yourself as a natural resource, then that is one thing we are world leaders. We take pride in supplying labours / slaves to the rest of world. Our relegion preaches that. |

The people are socially backward. The impoverishedness is further weakening them and depriving further the essential food and medicine for their well being. The unemployment is the next thing crippling them. So the problem of rural poverty alleviation should be the two pronged social& economical. Social Measures. Establishment of Anganwadis at the effected regions. Nutrient food is to be supplied to pregnant mothers and children. Promotion of the welfare schemes through NGOs and organizations befitting the people in development of small scale employment schemes. Implementing programs like food for work and increase their self sufficiency. Economical / Monetary measures Release of economic relief packages for irrigation projects for the development of agriculture etc. With the effective implementation of all the above the poverty can be definitely brought down. |

Many of our friends opine that that by providence of financial help, education, employment measures, housing etc... To the poor below poverty line helps them to mitigate the poverty. I ask you any of these measures are reaching the poor. How many of us adopted a poor family so as to help them to do better, find employment, educate them? How many of us are associated with the NGOS at least doing some thing in this direction.
No doubt Government has the responsibility for the design of poverty eradication schemes for achieving these goals. How many poor people know that something is in store with the government?
I strongly feel people's intervention personally, severally or institutionally in the poverty mitigation schemes instead of blaming the officials or the government.
Have you seen a woman holding malnourished baby in News paper The Hindu 3 days back?
All of us writing replies to this article need to. If the infants are starving imagine how will be the next generation in a country where the people in BPL class are more in number.Giving utmost importance to capacitate these people by all our means, policies packges to supply good food enable them stand ontheir feet and eke their livilyhood.

If we provide a fish then he eat and forget. If we trend to catch the fish then always enjoy the life.
Our Government provide the subsidy and free from loan taken by the banks. This is foolish decision to support the poor. Its support the bank for recovery.
Governemt should stop the subsidy and trend the people to do for his betterment

Educate each and every individual and poverty will vanish from our country. As per the GOI defination of Poverty a person who earns less than Rs.296.00 per month is considered below poverty line. We have around approx. 30 crore indians below this line and the literacy rate of India is about 67%, so on a prima facia view Illiteracy looks directly proportionate the poverty rate. Thus motivating NRI's to donate for the noble cause of educating poor people free of cost and also providing tax exemptions to People within a good income group in India can promote helping hands in more numbers towards this noble cause of educating poor people. |

Worldwide publishe media reports reaches to the people of India not only to urbans but also rurals and show the people of real India. They are living in huts or mud houses. Repair them season after season earn less than they need to feed or cover their bodies. But no one think about them. Our politicians, ministers, buearocrates, corporate kings live in fantasy life style and misuse wealth by digging in earth. The money comes from where for them. They misuse their powers knowing that they are the public servent not the king and expend much more than they need without thinking about others.
In old age only the one king and he do all for the public or his kingdom to save it from enemies but on today every person who have some powers or the wealth are kings for his present or future family only. They never thought about that type of people and have no time for them. The only a speech of thoughts have given to them keep patience. Sab kuch Ram Bharose hai, today every third Indian is poor tommorro it would be 4 or 5.

GOI develops several programms for poor but most of the funds remains unutilised since most of the poors does'nt know.
so its very important that they should know what government is doing. And this can only be done when they will be educated

Inequity is the fundamental cause of this malady! After independence, our leaders and the likes should have worked in tandem, as they did in freedom struggle, to elevate the position of every citizen of this country. Whereas, they did everything to broaden the gap and kept the flocks together uneducated and under-educated. In a nutshell, only a handful of people (say 4%) take the country to ransom and ruling a little over 1.2 billion population. We, the people, are at fault, and none-else!

Most of the communities in the entire Indian sub-continent(such as Bengali) succumbed in ‘Culture of Poverty'(Oscar Lewis), irrespective of class or economic strata, lives in pavement or apartment. Nobody is at all feel regret ed or ashamed of the deep-rooted corruption, decaying general quality of life, worst Politico-administrative system, weak mother language, continuous absorption of common social space (mental as well as physical, both). We are becoming fathers & mothers only by self-procreation, mindlessly & blindfold(supported by some lame excuses). Simply depriving their(the children) fundamental rights of a decent, caring society, fearless & dignified living. Do not ever look for any other positive alternative behaviour(values) to perform human way of parenthood, i.e. deliberately co-parenting children those are born out of ignorance, extreme poverty. It seems that all of us are being driven only by the very animal instinct. If the Bengali people ever be able to bring that genuine freedom (from vicious cycle of ‘poverty’) in their own life/attitude, involve themselves in ‘Production of (social) Space’ (Henri Lefebvre), initiate a movement by heart, an intense attachment is require with the society at large, decent & dedicated Politics will definitely come up. – Siddhartha Bandyopadhyay, 16/4, Girish Banerjee Lane, Howrah-711101.

Let’ all of us do our job with sincerity and honesty. It is said be like the sun, moon, its rays reach every possible corner of the earth, with out asking who you are? and from where you are? When we say, for poor, there is charity and the rich , there is paid, exclusive service, unknowingly, we are creating divisions. there must be other ways of empowering a poor person. Let the poor person be given his rightful opportunity, without underscoring his poverty. |

The wealth is concentrated geographically in few cities. We need to distribute the economic activity to all regions of India and to all districts within states. No new licences to start any large industry including ITES services should be given in any of the 6-7 large cities. Efforts should be made to distribute them across India and in all states. Why should all engineers and managers migrate to cities from rural areas?
|
|
We have to create more land banks to set up sez and invite multinationals to set up eco friendly projects. The Govt should take initiative and declare these zones as tax free but should specifically ask these companies to do target oriented developments with given time frame thus creating more job opportunities in the rural sector with basic ammeneties such as road, school, hospitals and electricity. |

Health is one of the foremost asset for a poverty struck citizen. A poor citizen who could not earn even square meal, if he fell sick. Neither he can afford medicines nor food. Ifa below middle class family runs well for 5 yars and suddenly bread winner fell sick , What will happen? So I suggest primary health should be takencare by Govt ,Corporates, NGOs if possible by us whenever possible so that poor can be pushed toearn better livelihood for himself. I have read in amagzine a voluntary organisation conducted Eye testing camp in a village and prescribed lens an ddonated spects. After this event a started earning Rs.100/- where he was earning 20-30 per daypreviously. Simultaneously vocational education should be taken up by govt so that earing capacity can increase. |

There are many solution proposed for eradication of poverty. But education is the single most important factor that can eradicate poverty completely. We can take the case of NRIs whose fore fathers migrated from this country as labourers to foreign countries. They did single important job tosend their kids to school availing the educational infrastructure of their adopted countries. After second & third generation see their status! In India it is absolutely necessary to provide mandatory education to all. An educated one has the capacity to find ways to fight poverty, hunger & other problems. |

Believers believe and non-believers don't . No one can tell what will happen tomorrow but we want to get assurity which makes us feel more secure and so we want to believe in it. All the astrologers are taking advantage of this mentality. |
