Broadly and in simplified way , the basic reason of failure and the success of any project depend on 5nos. M-factors, which are as follows:- 1. Money 2. Material 3. Manpower 4. Machinery and lastly, 5. Management All the above 5 factors are co related, lake of any single factor the project can not be success. Planning, Scheduling, Budgeting, Coordination, mismanagement etc. comes mainly under the heading of Management. So, whenever anybody thinks about the Failure/success of any project, we will ultimately get these 5 heads not anything else. |

these are the only governing factors on a project.what left else!!
Yes, I support 5 - M. If any one of these is not managed properly then there may be chance of failure or delay for the project.
I think these elements play most valuable role in guiding a project and reflects the project in every direction.

Fixing the period of gestation for a project is a very critical decision. The planning parts lacks the spirit. The project is slated to be completed without brain storming and resolving the issues of critical activities. |

i would like to focus on the planning role of the client specially from the govt sector, as they lack in foreseeing the likely activities which are going to play an important role in initiating a project. what i believe is that the client should initiate pre-construction activities well in advance of the actual start of construction activities, as there are no hiccups during the execution of the project, because all the pre-construction activities require liasioning with every govt department, specially in indian framework.
While agreeing with you in totality I would like to add a point and also like to see another aspect of planning.
1. Planning department in construction projects sometimes gets more monitoring oriented. This takes away planners' focus from detailed and practical planning. The difference should be understood and involvement of the most experienced construction managers is required even if they do not know Promavera or MSP.
2. Sometimes planners are expected to give birth to quadruplets so as to get more productivity in the same 9 months. The reasons of this 'crashing' may be many and mathematical planning may also be possible. But the at least 2 of the 3 primary project objectives (Scope, Time, Cost)get affected.
Hence, the project fails.
The target for completion is decided based on all factors enumerated by the contributors. The essential part of planning is ,points of references, site selections, appropriate selection of agencies for outsourcing, allocation of funds.Once this part is finalized, then individual activities are to be marked for duration or period of completion. The seasoned planners will resolve the critical activities where duration is estimated more comparing other activities.Taken together, the schedule of completion of each activity projected and all activities are drawn to closure or meeting point which is the date of completion. In my opinion,10% of the time should be devoted in forecasting the project completion. This 10% of time should be set off against the unforeseen circumstances.Hence the project should be opened for physical action after due process of planning.

Being the most important aspect of construction project, cash flow is very important. It should be planned properly by analysing the project life cycle. |

Yes for some companies it is very important. Also for mega projects it is very important.
There can be 2 very obvious ways of maintaing it at cheap cost. First be tight on your billing and control 'claimed v/s paid'. At the same time try to get more and more advances (interest free) from client (though it may have limitations). Secondly make sure that untill and unless you really want to quit from the contract, keep the work moving. Whatsoever be the reason don't stop working to the extent possible. Especially in projects involving use of heavy machineries.

|
I feel that construction productivity another factor , it has been the subject of inquiry by many researchers. In order to improve productivity, a study of the factors affecting it, whether positively or negatively, is necessary. Making use of those factors that positively affect productivity and eliminating (or controlling) factors that have a negative effect, will ultimately improve productivity.

Whatsoever manner, the project is skillfully mobilized with 5M, the delay due to Client interference can not be ruled out. There are projects where every stage/ step is to be approved by the Client for initiation / conformity. These procedural delay can not be set aside. For example approval of key personnel, their training in their facility, inspection & approval methods etc, construction site approval, etc. |

Construction projects are all made up of negotiations at various stages of project cycle. When we talk of negotiation its all about, getting more from less, which is the mantra for present generation. And hence effect of any negotiaiton process can lead to conflicts. Hence conflict management and negotiations go hand in hand in affecting the success of any construction projects. If you master NEgotiaition and Conflict Management skills you control the Project. |

I do not agree with your approach and attitude! Who said Negotiation is meant for "extracting more from less". I donot see any buisiness without negotiation and that doesn't create Conflict. Here is the experience/skill comes in light. One has to assertain wheather the negotiation is on right point/item and ensures it's compatitive feasibility on the ground. Otherwise antbody can makes falls commitments and seriousely damage your project and buisiness too.

I could say basic factor is actual duration of different works construction projects often differs, To reduce this duration automatically generated construction schedules may help to quickly produce more accurate estimates of construction duration. Such schedules will require improved activity duration estimates before the start of construction. Recent research has used flexible critical path method (CPM) schedules contained in an artificial intelligence (AI) based programming environment to create or update construction schedules.

I think its stakeholders, they should have early, regular and extensive involvement in the construction project process. Stakeholders needed to “buy-in” to the success of the project and be committed to it and the project team needed positive and ongoing contact with stakeholders.

I think its external factor, External factor are those influences outside the control of the construction project team that can influence project success. Here, respondents identified a stable political environment, stable industrial environment, and a balanced economic climate as being important in that they provide a suitable environment in which the project can be implemented and succeed.

Time management, workmanship, quality and management of raw materials and yes the cash flow at the site. Apart from this viability of the project. If all these things are considered before hand I think there should not be a problem or question of failure. |
