Solar energy

idea posted by Vineet Prakash Sales/BD Manager, Tata Power

I would say solar energy is the best option we have because its a renewable resource and as long as the sun exists, its energy will reach earth. Moreover Solar power generation releases no water or air pollution, because there is no combustion of fuels. So this is source of energy which we can definitely make use of in the future.

yes. it is going to be solar. especially county like India, where most o ftehplaces are having season hot, hotter, hottest, solar will be the answer. Govt and PVT parties are already have huge plans. US already ahead on this. the actual is more than plan till 2009. by say 2015 to 2020, you will see a stupendous growth in solar.

Hydrogen Energy - Economy

idea posted by anup bagla M.Phil student @ AHRD and Consultant / Specialist - Process & Environment, Energy Conservation & Sustainability, Stanley Consultants I P Ltd. (On Assignment basis)

Although, Solar is by far the best and most practical, economical and suitable option for India, which needs greater regulations / price control, better maintenance, other administrative improvements and further R&D on Technology and I support it ... I will go for Hydrogen Energy Economy, along with Solar Power, which is a very promising option and lot of research is going into it ..

It can be further coupled with Solar for initially generating Hydrogen fuel

Nuclear energy

idea posted by Shikha Malhotra Product Development Manager, Reliance Petroleum

In my view nuclear energy is the best form of energy because it does not produce any primary air pollution or release carbondioxide and sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere. Therefore, it contributes only a small amount to global warming or acid rain. Moreover the cost of making nuclear power, with current legislation, is about the same as making coal power, which is considered very inexpensive which according to me is the best option we have with respect to affordability and to save our environment.

Distributed generation sources with multiple energy basis

idea posted by Gautam Mazumder Sr. Manager Cust. Service, Crompton Greaves Ltd.

Having gone throught he various inputs and the comments of the members, I would like to add the following.

Till date we have only thermal energy as the base load energy supplier and we have found Nuclear also in the same lines. but as far as Hydel is concerned and also now there is plenty of wind none of them are really a source that we can depend on under abnormal conditions.

Planing for energy is also the security and the prosperity planning for the country, if we should choose a mix of enery generattion and delivery systems which not only will be with us at good times but also at the time of the emergency and crisis.

Wind energy is such that the same will require to be shutdown under high wind conditions and large wind farms are really risky as they will tend to through off lot of load and so can cause an unstable grid operation. So also is the case with Tidal energy which has limited use and with the tendency of large scale disturbances in the ocean can prove to be unreliable.

We run into problems when it does not rain and hydel plants are required to be shutdown or are operated at lower than peak capacuty but these are a good form of peaking power supply and in a larger starategy of operations these should be planned to be used more as peaking energy supplies than as base load energy.

During the day sunshile is plenty at least for 250 days in the year and so this can prove to be a good source for energy but then the same will require to be made cost effective for the low energy users, which it is still not.

We are facing a case of global warming due to CO2 emmissions and all the proposals/projects that are being done towards the reduction of the CO2 levels are also going to use energy to operate.  Hydrogen is a good source and quiet a bit of work has been done in fuel cells for powering the needs of many components in office ang commercial establishments.

So we need to develop 2-3 energy sources which can work in supporting or being part of the grid based on the envioremnet condition and also the different weather conditions that exist in our country, we should have also a policy of distributed power generation alsong with the ultra mega power projects that the goverment is encouraging. the distributed generation system should comprise of multiple technologies so as to support all weather conditions.

The hilly terrains can see micro hydel with a combination of solar and if necessary hydrogen cell based technology. similary the sea sides can be considered for wind, tidal, solar and thermal. So a energy source or technology is not the one type but multiple large and minimum are required for a balance and secure energy source.

As a country that suffers significant power supply shortages, India can not stick to or develop one particular technology. It is prudent therefore to encourage multiple sources. Many of us have agreed upon this.

Which one of them is best suited for us? I have the following criteria to chose. Carbon emissions is surely one of the important aspects. Nuclear and Renewable energy sources fit in here. However Both have their own shortfalls. Nuclear power plants tend to have higher generation capacity. Their fuel consumption is far less and so is the fuel expenses variation. However my European industry experience tell me that these plants need to allocate about 6 to 10% of their total costs structure on closure of the plant, once it lives thru its expeted life. The second investment aaspect lies in Grid. To stransmit such a huge quuantity of power, there needs to be a strong and reliable network. That is expensive. If wew look from the network investments perspective, we may support distributed power generation. But these lack quantum of generation capacity that nuclear power offers.

Therefore it is prudent to pursue distributed renewable power in areas where there is limited grid access or infrastructure and involve nuclear power in areas where grid investments are minimum.

I fully agree with your views.

My peronal opinion is that it should not be a "choice" of either this or that - The need for energy is ever increasing and when the developing and under developed countries, develop further, the need will only go up in a brisk pace.

We should rightly find a way to integrate the generated energy like a common platform with multiple feeder.  We should also find which source will exhaust first and price accordingly.  For example, fossil fuel based energy should be priced very very very high than a wind / tide / solar energy.

Device / equipment manufacturers should also put in theri efforts and investments in energy efficient devices development and also make it compatible with multi energy compatible, if required, if it helps the genration.

With the moon being present for half of the time (but for no moon day / period) the world should also look into the possibilities of generating lunar energy (energy from moon), if not initiated so far.  Even it may sound "Impossible" now, with focussed research and combination of knowledge from global specialists,it may be possible in the time to come

Tidal & Wind Energy

idea posted by Japan Shah Assistant Professor, Oxford School of Management

I believe that for India Tidal & Wind energy are the best reources of energy for 2 simple reasons:

A. 3/4 of India is surrounded by Sea/Ocean,Both the sources are renewable sources of energy

B. One gets carbon credits for both

Thus , i believe that the Tidal & Wind energy can be the future sources of energy to benefit the enviornment and will be economically affordable as the cost can be mitigated by revenues from Carbon Credits...

Zero Point energy (invisible vibration)

idea posted by George Varghese Proprietor, Jecyees

Presently cost effect and echo friendly energy sources are solar energy and windmill energy. We still have to think of the absence of the above source of energy. I strongly believe we should start research on zero point energy for the use in commercial purpose. This type of research can finally reach the spiritual side. According to my collected information the form of existence of human spirit is the form of zero point energy. Our spirits are waiting for approximate 1000 years for the re-birth. We will be able to use this source for the energy.

Thermonuclear Energy-Nuclear Fusion

idea posted by Madhukar Sharma National Head, ASME

Ok , I know its a bad practice to start with a question. But let me indulge in it for once -  Have you heard of "ITER "?

ITER stands for "International Thermonuclear Energy Reactor " . Its the name of a pilot project , involving EU,US,Japan , India China, South Korea to Build a reactor to produce power by means of Nuclear fusion process, using a Plasma . Yes, the same phenomenon which happens in thousands of time in a second on the SUN and that's source from where the solar energy comes from  . So we can say this project if successful , will mean beginning of a new era of " Taming the SUN ". The energy produced will be 500 times more than what comes out of the comparable size of a Nuclear power plant . And the fuel is Hydrogen ( Deuterium and Tritium ) . Deuterium is a naturally occuring isotope of Hydrogen and is abundantly available universally , whereas Tritium is a result of breeding of Lithium(Li). Though Li  is not as abundant as Deuterium , but enough is available for thousands of years to last.

And will it be stable even under completly unstable surroundings for example severe heat or cold etc

Pee Power

idea posted by Viktor Stephen COO, I Entrepreneur

Urine-powered cars, homes and personal electronic devices could be available in six months with new technology developed by scientists from Ohio University.Pee power is based on hydrogen, the most common element in the universe but one that has resisted efforts to produce, store, transport and use economically.

Storing pure hydrogen gas requires high pressure and low temperature. New nanomaterials with high surface areas can adsorb hydrogen, but have yet to be produced on a commercial scale.

Chemically binding hydrogen to other elements, like oxygen to create water, makes it easier to store and transport, but releasing the hydrogen when it's needed usually requires financially prohibitive amounts of electricity.

By attaching hydrogen to another element, nitrogen, Botte and her colleagues realized that they can store hydrogen without the exotic environmental conditions, and then release it with less electricity, 0.037 Volts instead of the 1.23 Volts needed for water.

One molecule of urea, a major component of urine, contains four atoms of hydrogen bonded to two atoms of nitrogen. Stick a special nickel electrode into a pool of urine, apply an electrical current, and hydrogen gas is released.

Botte's current prototype measures 3x3x1 inch and can produce up to 500 milliwatts of power. However, Botte and her colleagues are actively trying to commercialize several larger versions of the technology.

A fuel cell, urine-powered vehicle could theoretically travel 90 miles per gallon. A refrigerator-sized unit could produce one kilowatt of energy for about $5,000, although this price is a rough estimate, says Botte.

"The waste products from say a chicken farm could be used to produce the energy needed to run the farm," said John Stickney, a chemist and professor at the University of Georgia.

For livestock farmers who are required by law to pool their animals' waste, large scale prototypes could turn that urine into power within six months.

Smaller versions likely won't be available until after that, so the average consumer probably shouldn't start saving their pee just yet.

"It is not a solution for all our cars," said Stickney, "but it is the kind of process which will find many applications and will make for a greener world."

Future of energy cannot be classified as easly as it is asssumed. The future models for energy creation will be continous process and will evolve with time, and all the energies will be used at various levels of future.

As the concept of future models for energy creation demands upon each countries ecnomy. And at times two more sources of energy can also be used to create energy.

The countries with good and strong buying power in future will always go for nuclear energy. But over a period of time methane will be seen as the centre source of energy.

Portfolio of energy sources

idea posted by Deepak Agrawal Consultant, Independent Consultant

I think best option for every country is to make a portfolio of all the energy sources whether it is thermal, hydro, solar, wind, tidal etc. as per their environmental condition availability of sources. Today our main motto along with requirement of energy is to protect our climate.

We should try to use minimum % of energy source which pollute our environment very much but at the same time we make sure that we should not run out energy during the time of crisis.

Better option for future is to make investment in energy sources which are less polluted and gradually increase the consumption of these kinds of energy and reduces the consumption of highly polluted energy.

We can't make the changes overnight but we can do if every country/govt. takes proper step to gradually increase the consumption of non-polluted energy. I hope if we do this then in future after 10-20 years we will use only non-polluted energy at cheaper price.
