A culture of "instant gratification" is making today's schoolchildren harder to teach. Youngsters today live in a world dominated by reality television and celebrities "where success appears to come instantly and without any real effort. It is difficult for teachers to compete. Success in learning just doesn't come fast enough. Today's children spent a daily average of 1.7 hours online, 1.5 hours on computer gaming and 2.7 hours on watching television. Against this background, the job of the teacher is immensely harder than it was even ten years ago. To cope up with them, we have to move from dependent learning to independent learning. Teachers need to be capable of preparing students for a society and an economy in which they will be expected to be self-directed learners, able and motivated to keep learning over a lifetime. |

I agree with the last para of Sarika. Movies like taare Zamin per or 3 idiots can give an exemplary idea to see the changing panorama of life.
Kids are the most keen to learn then any other living creature.......and they have their own mood and ideologies in which they see the things and world. Their thinking is completely different to elder ones because they see with fresh eyes and a clean mind. Problem starts when an elder starts thinking that kids are vulnerable because of their ignorance about things.
I understand that an educated elder mind is more corrupt then the mind of a learning kid. I don't understand of behaving like a teacher for kids.......its nothing but self satisfaction of ones personal ego at the cost of learning of a helpless child.
learning is useless unless it comes out with ones own experience and touch of life. More we grow we dry out of habit of learning. Kids are challenging nowadays because they are learning to revolt.
Shifting of dependent learning to their own independent learning will give them a chance to see the world with their own understanding, with its freshness and beauty.
To my understanding this so called system of teaching has not at all created any big change in human rationality or his behavior rather has disturbed and created a stoppage.
"Teacher" is a bad word.........rather instead of being a teacher....one should be like an assistant only......in assisting the energy of a child to get it mold they way it wants to be, in its right direction.
No gardener wants to shape flowers as per his wish, every flower takes its own natural design shape.........he just helps in creating right environment for their growth.

First , we should accept that today's children are growing faster than we could ever imagine. When I was a child , my only contact with the outside world ( the world outside of our street ) was through the newspaper , or through listening to the elders in the family discussing the day's happenings. Even a reading of the newspaper was mostly restricted to the sports page. Today's children are bombarded with suicide bombings , serial killers , climate change and what have you from every direction. Whether it is TV or paper or the Internet , news / information / knowledge is everywhere. It is time we adapted to this fast moving world otherwise our children will do it without our help ! I have seen that children nowadays want explanations for everything ; in our time , the one explanation "you are too young to understand" sufficed ! Not so today. Children , right from class 5 are adept at using the Internet to get information , understand it and present it to others using tools like Word and Powerpoint. Trying to talk down to such children is unacceptable. In fact today's children learn through dialogue , which puts them level with adults. This should actually make them easier to teach , since they are doing more than their share in learning. Which is why you see more and more children excelling in activities at a much earlier age. Whether it is music , dance , sports or academics , children are doing it all at a much earlier stage in their lives. Which means they are learning faster. If they are harder to teach , it is because we adults , who are teaching them , are unable to keep pace ! |

It is true that today's generation is harder to teach than the previous ones and the arguments given above are true. But still a possible solution to menacing students would be to follow the carrot and stick approach. It is "the most effective" strategy to straighten out spoiled kids. Rewarding kids and favouring those who are obedient is another way of using "peer pressure" tactics (which work on all age groups) to get kids become more obedient to elders.
Hope this helps!
INdeed the world is moving faster and questions of any sort demand an immediate explanation thanks to the net .All in all things that will never change is knowing "what is right and what is wrong "

I think Gen Y children tend to get bore by too much bookish knowledge, if emphasis given to practical knowledge , may be that will work.. |

As a teacher I have experienced students getting bored of theoretical lectures.I have not been into this profession for many years but in some of my lectures I have felt that practical knowledge keeps them in class by connecting them with the outside world.Practical aspect of a topic that i suppose they are lesser exposed to,like things that we have inculcated during our upbringing from our families, throughout our life.Todays busy life of parents has given this generation too much of time and opportunity to be exposed with secondary source of information like internet etc but at the same time they do not have enough of 1st hand information.since they are sharper than ever and confident about their exams,Let them have some idea about the knowledge that only experience can fetch one.Once they are assured that their teacher knows more than they can at their age then they would like to follow us.They expect their teacher to give them bookish knowledge and this preoccupation of their mind discourages them, while if teachers start telling them practical aspects as well, then this would be unexpected and interesting for them.I have told all this on the basis of my experience.

In classical age, people had a very traditional way of leaning, waterman ink pens, thick pulp papers. Then came books, and blackboards. Then came Classrooms and College Environments. The World has been changing, all the time. Hence the way people groom, learn and grow also WILL CHANGE. The same question shall be raised by our Children, for their children too. Let's change with the world. We cannot control Technology, and exposure, Let's control our way of dealing with children. |

I like to treat generation gape as customer complaint ... why not we mould ourselves to meet their requirement ... requesting that try to understand their strengths ... they have technology , tools and can update themselves .... far better than us while adopting technology .... so we need to appreciate their talent and curiosity .... Treat them like a customer and provide the best solution because we are experienced ... simply |

The world is growing fast with advanced technologies. At my child hood in a village, a radio was very decorative. now at this stage of our world children growing from infant hood playing his fingers on the computer key board. Our teachers are not ready to update them self or they are not permitted due to their time limit in busy life to update them self to the requirement of the their profession. Kindly remember a child is born to an advance world than the parents. I believe this gives all answers of the question. |
