It seems that Google Chrome OS could be available for download in a week.

From the time, the project was announced in July, experts debated what Google’s ‘New Era’ OS would be like. There have been ‘alleged’ screen shots and even ‘fake’ torrents doing the rounds on the internet. Only those with supported devices will be able to use this version. Google has announced that it's working with the likes of Acer, HP, Freescale, Adobe, Qualcomm, ASUS, Texas Instruments and Toshiba. There is also concern over the availability of hardware drivers as it is believed that Google is leaving that task to the hardware manufacturers.

Chrome OS is expected to rely heavily on web apps for most of its functioning, a kind of ’switch-on OS’ instead of the ‘boot-up OS’ that we are all accustomed to. It will also be interesting to see how different this will be from the Android capable netbooks that are currently in the market. Experts have expressed some disappointment stating that they do not have enough control over the machine.

So, dear friends, how do you see Google chrome OS adoption?

Speed simplicity and security

idea posted by Radhakrishna Marar Business Analyst, Oracle

It's a great news and I am sure Google chrome OS will do well in the market.

Its Speed, simplicity and security will be the key aspects.

The user interface should be minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience should take place on the web.

I hope it will get a good response from the market.

Mac OS, Linux, Google OS should free the customers from OS lockin and depended applications. All hardware / gadgets should come with OS bundled along with the product. Let the best survive.

Web-OS not good for enterprise, security?

idea posted by Alessandro Miodini Senior Software Developer/Architect, ERGO

I like the idea of a fast, reliable and free (which is DIFFERENT from Open Source...) OS, but think about security and enterprise.

Security: If everything is on the web, how about security? HTTPS, OK, but would your company let you save their internal "top-secret" documents somewhere on the web they don't have control on?

Enterprise: Many banks, insurances, brokers, pharma don't give their users access (see security for the reason). This would require a HUGE change in the way they work, in their policies and security measures. And for what? In order to save money on licenses? Don't think so.

Other important factors:

Drivers: as already said

Games: young people want to be able to play their games (and in my opinion this is one of the factors for Linux not to be successful)

In conclusion. There could be  a future for Chrome OS in home computing, I don't see a clear one for businesses.

Alex

Drivers Support is the key for Chrome OS

Supporting different device drivers is the key for Chrome OS. Once Google Chrome OS is released users will try out and if doesnt support different drivers it will not be good.
