EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITES

Even in the past when there was no IT or BT sector there were manufacturing industries which were helping in creating employment opportunities, but today, most of them neglect Industries which are other than IT and few other more, this is creating scarcity for other fields interms of getting good skilled employee for them, and for that to happen our industries needs to be revived, should be given a fresh lease of life with increasing the pay scale and matching it to the other IT standards, and that will increase employment for graduates, who can easily get a better job than being coolie with relevant industry skills. But in India other Industries are doing less business, as indian political climate is not allowing more Foreign investments to come here, as India is not seen conducive to set up industries. So revival of these industries is the key to create more employment. |

Agree with Nikhil in terms of Indian Political scene which is still lethargic in implementing the single window system. Though the term has been coined to get implemented in the last few years. But no ease for enterprenuers, here is the first basic obstruction for NRI investors.
In todays economy, India is heavily dependent on forign investment and forign income, indian govt is busy in managing their own political issues rather than concentrting on the economy and the ever growing need to review the industries within the country. Ask yourself, if www and IT was not a career option, what would have happend ?. whatever happen to the 5 year plan that started after independence where each family household took the national goal as their own personal goal and worked towards it and made the necessary sacrifice to build india. I wish the govt would quit debating about which new party to create and spend time in developing the country from the inside instead of depending on forign countries. reviving the industries within indian is a hope that we would one day become a developed county instead of being tagged as a developing country..whats your opinion ?
"Graduates are vying for Coolie jobs" can be viewed differently. Even our Coolies are graduates. In India no one is uneducated. It is not the lack of employments which are driving them to railways. It is the lack of willingness in some Indians for a hard work. If any body goes to any small shop, hotel, restaurant, hospitals, and ask for an unskilled job, any one will be readily taken in. At least, this is the situation in Tamil Nadu. The textile industry in Coimbatore is always facing labor shortage. People who are inclined to work, will always fine one. Now it has become a new trend to look for government or Public Sector jobs, after the IT and economic slow melt down.
|
|
I often have been listening that in There is another side of the mindset. There are some people who are simply
looking for a job with certain guarantee from the government even with a license.
Such people are not ready for a private job because that is not licensed that
is provided with a coolie job. No one can remove a coolie from the job because
this is highly unionized and licensed. Recently I read news from Kolkata about
many post graduates applying for jobs of peons in the railway for the simple
reason that employment is in the government sector and a permanent one. No one
can change the attitude of such persons. They want guaranteed job irrespective
of the prestige or status. I feel let them be satisfied with that. Of course
there is need for industrialization and more employment generation in the
country but for such a big country like Microsolar Brain |

This idea irepresents a really modern approach that should be adopted. Also, the thing is that one should not criticize other on the nature of the job.Even if a lower heriarchial person is doing his job on time,it should me viewed as more professional than a higher heriarchial one escaping his/her duties.
As perfectly summed up by Mr.Pandit mindset is the first thing that has to be changed. Many people follow the western lifestyle in fashion food & other things but neglect their working style. If educated people enter the field they can bring new ideas as mentioned by Mr. Pandit. This can be one of the steps for our new India.

Experts form different verticals in the industry should join hands wid academia to impart practical on-job or otherwise job oriented training to fresh graduates. as they say there is wide gap between what is being taught in institutes & that of in industry...but no one is ready take the corrective action. Industry should take initiative in this regard to create bridge between students fraternity & corporate world. its hight time now & Government should adopt some serious & corrective measures with regards to educational system in India ,its curriculum & other issues. As the case of B.com graduate is mentioned over here, if he is well educated in terms of domain knowledge, application skills, soft skills & corporate exposure to carry out Accounts or finance function independently [to the some extent], no one can stop him from grabbing good job opportunity. moral of the story : we need to make genuine efforts to make them them " right Fit" in the job market. |

There is one side of the coin where India Inc. is struggling to get qualified professionals and there is this other side where a graduate has to work as a coolie. It shows what is taught in our schools/colleges is not enough to make someone employable. We need to reinvent our system of education to boost employability. Moreover a sense of entrepreneurship is to be inculcated at a very early stage so evry individual seeks to make other ten employable.
Hi deepti,
Amassing idea, if implemented this will surely reduce the unemployment in India. Due to lack of proper training and skill people are unemployed. So industries joining hands to train the freshers as per their need is an amassing idea.
Thanks for sharing your valuable thoughts. Keep participating on more interesting discussions.

The Idea of projecting, that, Graduation is the HIGHEST GOLDEN QUALIFICATION ever to be attained by a person in India, is itself to be condemned. The article tries to project clearely only this, about India. Will anyone be able to clearely differentiate the Job Role of a "Bell Boy" in a ***** Hotel and that of a "Coolie" in a "Ratna" Public Limited company. There is no clear guide as to how to put education into use. There is no article in India which shows Indian Graduate Professionals working as Waiters in Restaurants, Part-Time store keepers in Muti-Level Marketing stores or in retails shops, in a Foreign Country. Next, I hope to see article from country side showing Graduates Tilling and Farming a cultivation land. Gr8... to see (Now to the main idea)To start with, every professional colleges be allocated a seperate department for registering passed out students in their respective State Level Employment registry. This would ensure that seniority is given more priority.

Very well said Sampath. I totally agree with you. Unless we understand that a job is a job, we defeat the purpose of education. Education is for informed life and informed decisions. Its still not for your job. A simple graduation is not a professional qualification yet. We can think of ways to make it like Sampath suggested but a person is free to think and do what he want to do. Thats the only way he can become a free and happy person. You do what you think you can do as your job, for living and for your life .
The article is a kind of shame to the job of coolie. One shouldn't be shameful of being a coolie if he is a graduate. We also shouldn't be sympathetic to him. In fact, its like graduates should do something like this for their pocket money while still be encouraged to do more worthwhile.

It is time the organiations looked for specialiations with minute areas and also rationalise pay. I do not see a reason how for e.g. a CEO can be paid millions of times more than a Janitor who also essentially puts in his 100% for 10 hours a day! I guess the value system is skewed and unless there is a pay rationaliation with jobs being allocated more across (why are people spending 12-14 hours a day outside home and in office) will be key. |

When the same Indian comes to UK/USA and do waiter/manual job then He/She does not complain
|
|
I agree with many of you. I am in UK for the last 6 years and working with topmost industries in management. I am also serving voluntarily for local Gurdwara as VicePresident. I have seen people from India coming and professionally qualified (Engineers/Lawyers/doctors etc..) and working in sandwich factories, driving taxis, working as shelf stacker in shops, waiters and the list goes on........ The same Indian does not write and article or complaints here that they are doing low paid manual jobs.... If you ask them to go back and find good job in India they are not willing to and remain here and do the so called low jobs..... Thats why the Britihers says that an Indian can do any job....thats perception here... I think perception has to change that job is job or work is work. No one in UK asks what you do or what is your salary? But these two questions are the first to be asked in India.
|

|
I agree with you Ravinder, people should change their perception about them and the job available. They should not give up their self respect, this situation has rised because people do whatever work they are given. This should reduce, people should start demanding for the right job and should not work if they are underemployed.

As an engineer I have seen welder drawing three to four ties my salary. in europe skilled man power like sweeper, cleaners . painters, cooks, drivers get more jobs and more money. Well this is the transmigration of labour from agricultural,to production, service and than.. back to agricultural sector via..... labour oriented sector. I understand that plucking apple is a good job in USA.........LIKE COUNTRIES |
1
|
In countries like US, there is the feeling of dignity of labor and no work is considered a small job there. In fact the labor intesive jobs are more important in these countries because no body sees these jobs as a respected jobs as other white colour jobs, therefore such jobs invite handsome income. Even most of the Indians who migrate to these countries without any technical skill also do these small jobs, like cleaning dishes in hotels, washing toilets, sweeping roads etc and earn a handsome income which is enough to support their family at both the places. The only thing is one has to consider his job an important job because coolie;s job is also a requirement of the society. The educated youth can definitely apply their brains to improve this job also so that minimum manual effort is needed to carry out these jobs
|
|
Maybe part of the problem is that there are a lot of gradutes from careers with low demand. It is required to promote the proffessional careers with high demand (and low number of graduates) |

After the so called globalization, there had been a flood of jobs specially in IT and BPO companies, which could cover only the people who had some kinds of technical or language skills. There was a saturation in these sectors due to the great global recession which suddenly reduced the jobs drastically. But in our market we continued to buy foreign goods which was comparatively cheaper than indian made goods. The main reason, according to me was that the Govt gave a lot of concessions to the goods which was being imported and slowly there was no support to Indian manufacturing sector which led to closer of most of Indian manufacturing industries. The Govt could not stop the smuggling of cheaper goods even from the countries like china. If you compare the policies of our Govt with that of China, the main reason was that the Chinese industry policy was/is labor intensive and the Indian industry was capital intesive i.e. the manufacturing companies started importing high speed manufacturing machines which required less labor and high productivity and also some more complicated technically, which required technical skill to operate such machines and there was reduction in the requirement of people who were not technically educated which led to further unemployment. To solve this problem the requirement is not graduates but people who are technically educated, therefore the education policy needs to be changed. Graduation is an education which leads to higher intellectual jobs and not everybody should try to become a graduate. Our youth also needs to change their mind set that only option for them is mere a service. They can try their own jobs whether it is selling small groceries to which the presence to educated youth will bring some quality and professiolism |

Indian ethos have to change to respect the person that he is woking hard and honestly and leading a respectable life. Work is work be it of any kind. The person is not doing any wrong things to earn his living, which should be hated. |

Sir,
i agree with what u tell.. indians can be cab drivers, work in motels etc in foreign countries but i would like to ask u one thing .. if you were in India would you allow ur son or daughter work for low level jobs for his/her pocket money or would u tel him/her that u wil give same amount without work?? Indian are not broad in vision as of yet..indians work best in compulsion/pressure .. so loan they have taken or cost of living makes them to work and like here no one will recognize them even is he is car cleaner there...
|
|
I strongly feel that the graduates pass out ifuture should also consider taking agriculture as a professional field to solve the shortage of food for India. It will also keep a check on the increase in pricess they cannot be fooled easily. They should partner with the farmers who are unaware of the technology that can harness the better productivity in agricultural activities. This will add to the knowledge of farmers who don't get their pay properly by the different middlemen in selling of agricultural products. |
1
|
I support your idea. Agriculture in India has great potential to grow further. We must learn to respect all works. We are discussing here, but who will communicate these ideas to the youth?
Make such an awareness, who knows one of them will become another Tata, Birla in agri industry!!! If education is not making you constructive then its useless.
|
|
The primary reason for the said problem is the gap between the demand and supply side. There is no relation between the two due to which we are seeing such kind of things here...wherever you go will find the people are coming out from the institutes and universities in every corner in India whereas the demad is quite low as compared to its counterpart...moreover if the demand occur in some of the field and sectors the supply side is no competent and capable enough in terms of quality of resources and people companies and organization are looking for on account of which people dont have any option rather to work in such kind of profile for the survival benefit...Even from the government side nothing has been done irrespective of th fact and the promotion being done by the political leader for the employment issue in India...I think one major problem which I see is the quality education and knowledge system which is the key and demand of the hour lacking here except some of the top institution like IITs and IIMS... |

An over-qualified person for the job cannot get job satisfaction and ultimately be a drop-outb
|
|
Coolies have a job descriptions just like all other jobs. The recruiting Company/ Railways/ PSUs would be well advised to reject applications from such desperate people who are plainly over-qualified for the Post. Industry at large requires Graduates at Supervisory levels to work on shop floors but find no takers because of a variety of reasons, mostly unwillingness to put in long hours of hard work. Companies opt for experienced Grads to avoid training costs which can be compensated only by loyal service for at least 5 years. But most grads do job hunting for higher emoluments within months or even days and ditch the Company which spent heavily on their skill-building. There should be system wherein such Companies can be empowered to retain their trainees for at least the minimum years required to recover their training costs. |

Still we are in British management System, we have to break this system. INDIA is on of the country where so no. of people are Educated , we have to utilise it in proper way.We have to set up such system so that each Graduates have an opportunity to do Business. For this Resourse mangment Globlly is the First factor which would open no. of Opportunity in INDIA, second open knowledge to everyone, Break large Industries to smaller, Keep all this think away from Polytics. |

Dont take your education qualification as final decision on what you are gonna be in life. Chill! follow your heart and believe in yourself and you will achieve whatever you want. I think only salary should not determine the greatness of a job, importance should be given to job satisfaction and doing your work wholeheartedly. Make decision without just considering salary. My father a Btech holder in civil found that he had aptitude in chemical field, his passion for the field motivated him and today he is successful ... nothing could stop him. So i think no "recession", "slowdown" can curtail your dreams until you make yourself weak. You are the maker of your destiny! |

Why does every Indian have to be a graduate to survive? And this knowledge has no relevance to the job being performed. If one looks at the Western System, every individual doe not go to college, but branches after high school to different vocational professions depending on the financial ability. Why do we look down at vocational professionals like mechanics, plumbers, electricians etc? The Govt started a scheme to certify such professionals but not much has come of it primarily because of inability to respect professionals who perform what we consider 'menial' or 'small jobs'. We definitely need to change our outlook.

The plus three course in Arts, Science & Commerce stream in fact stereo type & lacks vocational courses resulting which graduates or masters from these streams always need additional professional degrees/diplomas for getting a lucrative job. Many vocational &professional courses canbe inserted in these graduation courses so that after getting degree one can be professionally equipped for a lucrative job. |

The idea put forward by Nikhil is a worthwhile one. But apart from reviving flailing industries, I believe that govt.'s help in promoting various private businesses would be a more impactful way of increasing the employment opportunities in the country. The govt. has various public sector banks for one to start with. Concessional loans for enthusiastic individuals with innovative ideas is one help that it would have far reaching effects. There is a general agreement amongst the few VCs in India that there are a lot of individuals with brilliant ideas in the IT domain itself, but with limited financial resources the VCs are unable to promote up all the ideas. If the govt. also kicks in with some kind of separate entity in itself that would be having experienced people from various industries in its panel of directors and backed by good financial support , it would be a major fillip to the entrepreneur attitude of youths of the country. |

The most fundamental change is required in education level. The jobs are getting created out of business and we rarely promote the idea of business and entrepreneurship in the mind of school children. |

During schooldays I learned a phrase, "Education leads to progress!" And the teacher gave us examples like man scaled up the moon even. But when I think about our Indian Society - does it really took the man towards progress??? Progress in which terms? Scientific achievements only??? For me progress means positive changes w.r.t. mindset, the way we take and deal the issues. But unfortunately, it hardly happens! Being a coolie is better than being a street beggar. And being respected is everyone's fundamental right. I personally feel that education made our standard of living costlier, our sense of dressing being more modern, but it hardly made our thinking modern... We do not like to make friends with poor status. For me progress means the progress of whole nation not mine only. Why do we rely only on industries and ministries for employment? Yes one is right because they can bring change to masses. But we ourselves should understand the plight of such youths and their families. Unemployment not only bringing educated coolies but the thieves, the terrorists and other disruptive elements in the country. Just keeping the Govt. responsible for progress is not enough - make them realize the duties along with the citizens. We can bring these graduate youths together and give them a platform to start some small business, leading them to really honest NGOs working for such people, employ them in our houses, get them to IT, ITI training institutes, and finally wake up the manufacturing industries & ministry and show them there is plenty of employable labour and they have no excuse to delay in the projects. Yes in the year 2009 I attended almost all the Energy/Power Conferences and one of the reasons to delay in development of power projects given by Big cos was lack of skilled labour, what a pity! A country with so much unemployed graduates is lacking manpower!!! They are giving reasons and reasons and hardly taking fruitful initiatives. We have to take some initiatives ... get united to fight poverty... establish institutes, create small scale business awareness among youth, and make realize every individual the duties of being A Human! Who knows after few years you may see your off-springs among these coolies. |

ya that is very true,no work is small or big,but if we had a good start from our childhood,we have seen a lot of dreams, our parents told us that child u should serve ur country first, now due to the reason of permanent job, lifetime salary,do we quit all aims, dreams and values,if we are more educated then our country is called educated and when we r so much educated then why we people go for these permanent jobs, why we don't go for serving country by using our skills which are very efficient to do something that is beneficial to our country, and if we work hard ofcourse the country will progress, and yes that will be greatest achievenment ,I think. |

I Swear... if you look at the current Indian employer scenario, every second or third employer wants his employee to be well experienced before he/she gets into his organization. How can this happen until any company doesn't hire an fresher. I feel Not all organizations have a policy to hire a fresher. So if this existing condition has to improve and well graduated candidate(s) has to work as per his degree or knowledge then its the responsibility of every organization to give a chance to work as a fresher and not demand every time for experienced candidate. Every organization these days is trying to reduce their cost by demanding a candidate who has good hands off experience in the related field of requirement. ... Thank you, Manish N Cheers!! |

One should always look at the dignity of labour no trade is small. To anybody work is worship andgod, and bread winner. As long as person is way ahead with ethical values any job is great . Aporter should be proud that he is rendering service and sharing the burden of others. It is not a small job. There may be shortage of white collar jobs or white collar may not be available within the vincity of candidates choice which may be leading tograduates weighing for coolie jobs. The uncertainity about private sector, inconsistant pays I think are leading the young graductes for this jobs in railways. Railway job ensures security to job , family and other facets of life. It is great that graduates are understanding dignity of labour and family commitments. |

Never mind ... such jobs may be a 'stop-gap' arrangements till s/he find his/her final destination. We are seeking job - inherent demand is a 'suitable / respectful/ highpaying' job. This may take some time. Further, we must not dis-respect the job of a porter .. !! Have U seen some a posting here, says : most of the Indian graduates are un-employable ? This is a matter of grave concern. We are to think deeply how this bottle-neck may be overcome. |

Quality is the key , today graduation is just a formality .. Today most students doesn't choose Physics because they like Einstein nor do they choose English Literature because they are crazy about the meaning between the lines of Shakespeare. A few are exception and they possess quality and they are always posted well. Like what 3 idiots depict ,don't run after success ,run for your passion. |

Nikhil, I agree with you but I think most of the graduates are applying for such jobs out of frustration. There is a lot of employment Opportunities available in BPO, data entry etc. Graduates need to align with the job market like BPO etc instead of getting frustrated. They may need to get training in areas like BPO etc. Some of the graduates due to their lack of self-confidence apply such posts in Rlys and Govt organization purely for the job guarantee. Some of them prefer to sit for 6 hours in government organization but not willing to put in their hard work in a private organization |

Kerela IT firms are hunting hackers .. recruiting them in their companies...This is unique way of finding the talent because formal degree does not matter here and what you get is the best people. But what about safety factor.. Is your comany... |
Reservations are always in govt orgs.. and the drop outs do not open them.. do they? Managers having poor marks has nothing to do here becasue either they have establlished the platform or they have enough experience and to add to this let me tell you... |
Business schools were meant to be guides and they don't create a perfect person, they give raw mind a direction. |
