Today lot of social networks provide location based services, the business potential of such sites may not be immediately apparent. At present, the location-based network is less about conversations and resource sharing, and more about tying your social activities to physical places.

For brick-and-mortar businesses, this location based strategy makes a lot of sense. But what about brand promotion in general, How can brands use location based services??

Targeting is one main area. Marketers struggle to target customers more accurately can now take on new dimensions with the inclusion of location-based services and application layered on. So, now when they update about a particular place, proper targetted ads will be coming to them, than the spam which actually happens today, so location based services like Foursquare, Gowalla, and now with Facebook places, it will be a handy tool for brands.

purvi its true.  especially for local brands it is really advantageous.  They can market their product specifically by targeting required customers taking geographical advantage and their brand presence.
