Ever since the arrival of private telecom service providers after the liberalization of Indian economy in 1991, the state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd(BSNL) has been desperately looking for measures to keep its customer base intact. The company has not been able to grow in line with the market and has been steadily losing its market share.

BSNL which is the forefront provider of telephony services in rural India, is gradually losing it's market share to leading private operators. The company started the PCO revolution in the country and took the mammoth task of providing telephony service in the rural India which was then a nonviable business for the private providers. Now with the wireline services taking a backseat and wireless is flourishing.

BSNL's wireless service's growth has been declining despite its very low tariffs. It has lost 131,581 customers due to mobile number portability!!

Can BSNL survive this competition? The answer will be NO.. But still there is time, What should they do to survive??

SINCERITY, DEDICATION & HONESTY OF BSNL OFFICERS & STAFF

idea posted by PS Dhingra CEO & Vigilance & Transformation Management Consultant, Dhingra Group of Management & Educational Consultants

The key to survival of BSNL lies only in the sincerity, dedication & honesty of the Officers and staff of BSNL, which is wanting in most of them.

Probably Ketan Natubhai, by using the word, "sincerely" has forgotten that according to his own last post such words are used merely for delivering good speach. Anyway, at last he has agreed on the need of sincerity in the BSNL.

About his views on the fear of suspension or punishment for the employees, probably he is not aware that maximum cases of punishments can be found in the BSNL and MTNL as compared to any other organization of the Government of India, but those punishments are given to most of the sincere and honest employees only and not to the corrupt employees. About suspension, most of the employees would prefer to be suspended, as while during the first three months, a suspended employee gets 50% of the pay and after that 75% of his pay without working.

So, what fear of suspension and punishment can do to such employees, if most of the employees are not sincere, honest and dedicated? Further, when out of bias of superiors the existing sincere, honest and dedicated employees are made target to punish them by finding faults in their sincere efforts or held up at promotion, the other employees would not like to work to get their work screened just for finding faults only and not to be rewarded or appreciated.

In my original post I placed only the inside picture, what I had been observing in the working pattern of these telecom giants for the last several decades. Based on several proofs, I have seen several of the sincere employees had been struggling to save their services in these organizations when managements proposed disciplinary action against them without any of their fault, or on account of faults of others.

Dear Natteraja, That is why, I have stated that sincerity, honesty and dedication are necessary on the part of the BSNL staff. You are facing problem only due to their insincere, dishonest and non-dedicated services.

To improve Management and Service

idea posted by Virag Shah Confidential
The most important factor is service and majority people are facing service problem otherwise all type of plan are good. BSNL will survive definitely there is not issue. but it will become more better if management and service will improve. Problem fo people not BSNL. I dont think so that BSNL will much improve because of POLITICS. Politics is main thing in Govt. sector.

Some times for some organisation we think that 'How this will survive in this stiff competition?'And also for our country many have commented that the things here working with the God Blessings!! RAM BHAROSE! So we should not waste! our Time! in discussing all this thing? I would like to ask one question to the Purvi that before 2010 who was knowing about 2 G SPECTRUM Gotala? but still to day they are functioning? The reason is that this is Government Organisation so they need not have to worry, when they require money they can collect by the way of Tax!

YES BSNL CAN SURVIVE IN THIS COMPETITION IF AND ONLY IF WE UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS OUR ORGANIZATION AND WE TAKE THE RESPONSIBILITY TO STOP ALL THIS CORRUPTIVE BUSINESS OF THEIR OFFICERS AND MINISTRY THAN WE CAN SEE THE REAL FUNCTIONING OF IT.NO BODY IS WORKING SINCERELY,NO RECTIFICATION OF FAULT,POOR SERVICES ARE THE SECOND SIDE OF THE COIN OF CORRUPTION MEANS IF THE STAFF WORKS  SINCERELY THERE WILL BE LESS FAULT SO LESSER WILL BE THE BRIBE.WHEN WE STOP GIVING BRIBE TO THEIR EMPLOYEES AND PRESSURING THEM TO WORK WITH THE FEAR OF SUSPENSION IF NOT WORK PROPERLY THEN WE CAN GET FANTASTIC RESULTS.IT IS NEED LES TO EXPLAIN THAT THE BSNL HAVING THE BEST NET WORK AMONG ALL COMPANIES AND THEIR STAFF IS VERY COMPETITIVE AS FAR AS THE KNOWLEDGE IS CONCERN.THE FEAR OF PUNISHMENT IF NOT REFORMING CAN GIVE FANTASTIC RESULT!

We Indians having capacity of delivering good speech,Words like Honesty,Dedication Dignity,Loyalty,Integrity,Sincerity,etc.etc...are being often used in our planning and lecture. If the things are working as per our speech then ANNA HAZARE would not have gone for Hunger strike for passing Lokpal Bill.We have seen corruption at Mantri level but Government Officers are equally corrupted and if we add the total corruption figure at officer level it may be higher than Mantri's figure. So the Government Enterprise have no fear if they are not performing or earning. When they require fund they will collect by way of tax. I don't able to understand why we are optimistic and proving our self that our sincerity, honesty and dedication will make the BSNL competitive with the others? If it so the what we are doing for more than 50 years?Have any body have noticed that any ministry or any officer have taken interest in making the organisation no 1.? WE can not face off from reality. In case if We understand that this our responsibility to stop such corruptive business of the ministry and officers such organisation can become no 1.

This is the most important thing here they need to do. Right people , right spirit of working and good steps to improve the network problem. Appointing better people at customer care . Everything will add up to betterment of BSNL.

Simplest solution is Government must quit out of BSNL and other service oriented sectors and aim to better perform regulator's role. Instead of making mess of both.

All the suggested ideas will automatically fall in place.

Agreed Narayan,

Yet that is the only solution.

Expecting Government to give autonomy will at best remain a dream as the compulsive disorder of ego massage and never fulfilling hunger for power and money is even more tough to control now. Discipline is easy to loose and very difficult to bring back especially in any management.

The unions would never allow this to happen. People in Government held organizations get their salaries even without they putting much work only as long as it is held by the Govrenment. They get paid irrespective of whether they perform or not and the organization is making profit or not. The Government in turn can pay only with the tax payer's money.

If allowed to privatize, then most of these non-working / non-performing blokes would have to work to earn their livelihood and this they would oppose vehemently. And the Communists would join with them in support.

Looking at the present scenario the govt may take such a move to give to the private sector.

First and foremost they have to improve on their technological offering. They are way behind the competition on this. Then can come the sincerety of the officers etc. A dose of privatisation should also do good for BSNL as it would shed the protectionism of both its employess and in their general trade.

Despite having all infrastructure, the company's service is quite poor. Today, people do not have much patience to wait. And in this age of fast service, if the staff do not empathise with the customer's complaints or desired service the are bound to lose market share. Low tarrifs with poor service is not the answer.

Service wise growth. If company will grow the salary will grow. BSNL is public sector company so no need to take an extra effort for there employee to good salary and incentives. Govt automatic increase there salary whatever the company growth. This is the big factor to for bad service of this telecom company. In this competitive market only good service can taken care all the growth of Telecom company

The folly of such service providers are forced to go through the rigmorale of unworkable policies, which are not usually mended according to the situation, competitive analysis, etc. Many of the times, even if they want change, their political masters destroy their move! They have to get out of the shackles of bureaucratic red tapism, then only they will be on par with other competitors.

idea posted by G A Narayan VP - Marketing, KE Housing P. Ltd.

It simply cannot survive. They are still out dated and are still living in the licence raj (dinosaurs era). Just shut it down in order to save tax payer's money. Offer VRS to all the staff and send them home. Any kind of changes would be opposed vehemently by the Unions and hence it is a waste of tax payer's money. It is a white elephant.

Look at their service and it really sucks. They are totally unprofessional and unproductive. I own a broad band connection and I just am totally unsatisfied. I just want to stop BSNL and shift to another company. Period.
