How can companies get better in Project Management ???

In my previously given idea for the similar debate that from instituions last year classes this should be taught by a retired person of an organisation or the new comer should be kept under probation ,many organisations are following this.

Best Practices and Lessons Learned from past experiences to be studied, analysed, documented and shared among others for the following reasons:

1. Avoid repeatation of Mistakes

2. Utilization and enhancement of Best Practices

3. Continous Learning and Adaptation Culture building

4. Filling Knowledge Gaps

All the above efforts shall lead the organization and team towards better PM efforts in future...!!!

Time and cost are the key yardsticks of all projects...

Learning from what others are doing companies can become better than before.

It can also learn the past experiences....

I believe building and sustaining effective project sponsorship and governance is the fad in project management as executive sponsors sets the priorities for the project. Project managers have the authority to raise project management issues, but often don't have the authority to resolve them. 

I would say start working to get others understand the real value of Project Management, since you are going to need them and their support if you want your company to get better in the field.

Many companies have Implemented PMBOK - but - this idea was not documented here. We can extract Knowledge out of PMBOK, if a good clusty kind of semantic and context sensitive search canbe implemented.

Normally the deliverables are scrutinized by the QA but, never the Project Management process and its components starting from beginning to end (Risks and contingencies, assumptions, trend of handling situation, Follwoing established well accepted methods,...)

Since the question focuses on mature PM organizations, i am assuming that a PMO(Project Management Office) is already in place.The next steps could be:

1. Conduct an Organizational Project Management Maturity Assessment(like OPM3).This would help you in identifying the next good(best) practices to incorporate as well as improving upon the existing ones based on the gap analysis.

2.Expand the role of the PMO(like optimizing/introducing resource management,cost engineering functions etc.) or transforming a weather station PMO to a control tower PMO

3.Explore Strategic Project Management & Project Portfolio Management
