Today national brands face a big time threat from retail brands that have flooded the Indian markets. Problem arises when the retailer places its own brands with that of the national brands under the same roof. The same product is copied and placed under some other name with that of the original brands.....

Thus how can companies prevent retailers from doing so??

BATCH NUMBERS

idea posted by NATTERAJA R. ARIKRISHNAN GM-Projects, Bentec Electricals & Electronics Pvt. Ltd

The manufacturer's product can bear the batch No accompanied by computerized code ie lines/strips in different formation to differentiate from the identical or copied or duplicate products. Another way is of 3 dimensional stickers on the products. One more way may be of allotting code numbers for the products for different states that will help to red-hand   the defaulters.

Dear Arikrishnan: There are two aspects, one abut forgery and the other about allegations of small companies only induliging in fraud. The first instance is a law and order problem and has to be treated legally . The 2nd allegation about small companies indulging in fraud is itself a fraud statement . Your contention that small manufacturers have gained by selling their brands is mistaken. Even today the erstwhile Kwality Ice Cream rues for being misguided by HUL when they reluctantly parted way with their products . So is the case with Thumps Up of Parles who were fooled to sell their brands. Not to say the least while Coke is still a non starter, Thumps Up sales are peaking and is now exported to ME too. Have you ever tried Sudol the antiseptic liquid which easily overtakes Dettol and Savlon . All said and done, I have developed a Room Freshner which can stand out in quality. Can u take up the agency for the same with guaranteed sales .

Well Mr.Jayaraman, your concern is correct but relates to acquisition of companies by the big sorts and it quite natural in business games. Of course i agree that the small business has been strangled but at the same time the small business people are compensated in a better way than they expected.

Here, the question is the duplication of products that are similar to the original brands which face threat from the markets. When we talk about the consumer goods, say electrical/electronic goods, there are plenty of duplicates or identical in the market giving a big threat to the original one on account of lower prices than the original products and are being sold without bills which means the duplicate products producers are not making any duties and taxes to the govt.

The products which are more familiar and fast moving in the markets, for them there are duplicates in the market.

Yes Nateeraja I agree with your point of view on the subject and top of it all once the product is patented there will always be law enforcing agencies will be after them to stop in indulging in such activities.

What an Absurd Mind Set

You educated have a perceived, prejudiced, ill feeling of small manufacturers . No small company copies the big brands , on the contrary the big brands strangles the upcoming small manufacturers . The classic example is Colin bought by Reckitt, Good Knight bought by the Godrej , Thumps bought by Cocoacola, Viva bought by Horlicks and very recently Itch Guard/Dermicool bought by Reckitt again . Small companies do make good products but they can not afford the publicity and where they can , they are lured by the money power . Narasus Coffee make instant coffee which are at par with Nescafe and Bur but any of u prejudiced mind has the guts to try it with an open mind . Campco and Amul make chocolates but the market is dominated by Cdbury's and Nestle . The list goes on . Its a shame that India which boosts of nuclear energy can not make a carbolic soap ala Lifebuoy though the technlgy is simple . Unless ur mind set changes our India can never improve . As a symbolic crusade I ve been marketing a detergent called KITE but no takers. My only source of solace is Dhobigat who ve been my strong base but single sparrow doesnt bring spring.

We can minimize the copying by patenting the design of our product.

Awareness About Design/Product

idea posted by Vipin Bhasin Private Equity/Hedge Fund/VC-Manager, Indian Investment Co.
Good Ideas are given here by experts. But duplicating the product is not an easy task in terms of quality. Usually companies are using Batch numbers, different patented designs etc. But still duplicate products (branded) are available in the market. The reason is lack of awareness about the brand. We believe and trust on retailers, brand name & logo of product. But not much aware about the quality of product. Companies can add quality check part with their advertisement which will convenient for customer to check before purchasing. Companies can restrict their policy regarding the same including billing part which is one of major part of actual sales of original product.

Have stirct policies with your retailer

idea posted by Saurabh Awasthi SBU/Profit Center Head, ONGC

Whenever you go under agreement with a retailer...have strict norms with them. Make sure that they dont come up with the replicas of ur products some day. If thgey do then break the contract and pull out your products.
