Traveling ticketless by train in India is not uncommon. In fact, traveling so in local trains is a matter of pride and adventure for many. After all, the likelihood of getting caught is low. Even so, sometime ago, an insurance scheme was launched – surreptitiously one presumes – for ticketless travelers. By paying a small monthly premium, if caught, the penalty for ticketless travel would be paid by the insurer and the traveler was free to continue his/her travel (ticketless, presumably).

This might well be an apocryphal story but it illustrates the infinite capacity of the Indian mind to “opportunistically” innovate or invoke Jugaad (a term that’s since become fashionable internationally). Another common example is the case of washing machines being used to churn milk to make butter in rural Punjab. There are scores of examples of such Jugaad innovations but hardly any for what one might call Systematic Innovation, which is typically the source of major innovations on a sustained basis.

So how can Indians move from "Jugaad" to large scale innovation to script a better future for India??

Crafting the Innovative Attitude during Early education

idea posted by Amit Misra Software Engineer -4 , Juniper Networks

When i was a kid i was never allowed to use innovation and always kept focused on learning the things as they are, And when my organization demands innovation i have to work against my learning to be innovative.

If my basic education had allowed me to express my mind; things surely would have been different.

Innovation is in attitude and attitude develops from our society, our surrounding, if we start promoting our kids innovation things would surely change, but seems it is too late for me to become more innovative over night.

I support this idea, as it will give definitely good results.

I would not want to repeat the age old prophecy that 'many things in India will change if its educational system is changed', but its so actually true. Any kind of innovation either large or small, starts with small attempts of solving the same problems in a different way. This on a psyche level comes from how've learned to live. And most of the learning happens from SCHOOLS. Indian schools still teach what, where & why. None asks how!! As a result we lack the zeal to innovate. We dont think differnt unless we're forced to.

I believe that innovation cannot be systematized, it still has to be crude and down to earth. Some people implement innovative ideas on a personal level, guess thats what we call JUGAD. But for it to take shape in a big way, we need so many JUGADEES working towards some goal. Thats rare in INDIA. And thats how Indians can move from JUGAD to largescale innovation.

Cultural Change

idea posted by John Jacob Consultant, confidential

In order to move 'to  large scale innovation..' the core culture of India and Indians should change. People should stop encouraging lazy and defeating attitudes (like religion, caste, language, color, social status, corruption, jealousy etc) and start encouraging positive attitudes like hard work, truthfulness, integrity, compassion towards others, determination, enthusiasm etc. These qualities are not going to be accepted by Indians in the near future. So, innovation on a large scale will be a part-time activity.

Proper strategic and integrative vision

idea posted by Amrita Animation/Graphic Artist, Creative design

Firms are the primary agents of industrial innovation. While the incentive for innovation by firms in India has increased after economic liberalisation, the inputs (funding, trained people and basic research and development) for innovation by firms have not kept pace with firms needs. Nor has the capacity of firms to innovate.

Also Government's efforts to enhance the availability of inputs to the innovation process have been ineffective because of the lack of a strategic and integrative vision, inadequate resources, and poor implementation.

Amrita you are right on your observation. In fact I am of the opinion that Indian Companies hardly keep a budget for R&D. I feel these companies think that R&D is a sheer waste of funds.

Well as of now the vision is missing but as we grow probably R&D will come to force. Once one company makes a fortune by R&D all will follow. If you see in western countries in most of the innovation one or the other Indian is associated(NRI).

If Government provides sufficient back up for strategic vision by way of tax rebate etc it will probably happen much faster.

The companies in India are not working as primary agents for innovation, which is sad but true.

More competition, cost effectiveness & awareness of sustainilbility alongwith profit making rather than short term innovation(juggaR) with high profit margins will be a solution farsighted at the moment.

What we do, is to cater inhouse consumption which is really huge & easily accepted by the masses for such reasons.

Wherever, we think for export...we will find the set vision, quality control & competitive measures with all possible stretegies inplace in any indian or MNC operates in India.

On your example, if people starts buying ticket while travelling...insurance company will stop getting their premiums OR if the buyer starts questioning the constituents, composition & compliance of any such product that has been produce by the such companies....will bound the companies to transform their JuggaR into proper innovation.

If LIJJAT papad can rise to international level that is widely accepted everywhere then why not others?

The process is slow & results cant be achieved immediately, however, thinking of such idea is the point where few can exercise to turn the idea into reality.

There are many factors that prompt people to opt for jugaR & main is wide categories of economical background & neccesity to avail.

We still have 80% of india lives in villages & for sure balance 20% cant be treated as complete hindustan!

We have metro in Delhi with another viable solution of transport, however, go 30km away from delhi where you will find real "JugaRR"(engine mounted over trolley) to transport people from main road to internal road(villages).

If people become aware of what they want to do & what they expect from their "want"then it will be easy to channelise their ideas to real time many innovation & our country will be the jungle of innovations rather then a dumping yard of useless domestic innovations of west.

Jugaad is catalytic converter

idea posted by Mohammad Bakhsh Project Leader/Managing Consultant, Freelancer

Jugaad has nothing to do with culture,it is craving for change to move things at that point of time when it is needed most. When it is successful,it is adapted to suit the situation. These jugaads should be given wide publicity to bring  in the notice of R& D cell for effecting improvement. We should appreciate that people down the line has exposed inadequacy in the system.

Jugaad should be accepted incipient manoeuvrings leading to improved version at the later stage.I find these jugaads as necessity in search of viable alternative/

Mindset Change

idea posted by Dipendra Sharma Supply Chain Consultant, IT

Well, I do agree with what others have stated here. Some of you have referred to Innovation/cost effectiveness and government intervention.

I would like to go one step backwards. Primarily what is important is changing the mindset of the people. Change the mindset, (easier said than done though). Once the mindset of the people is changed and they look at themselves as ethical and sincere citizens of the country, they automatically become good human beings doing the right thing. Mindset change can only bring in the radical change we want to see. It is the only way India can be taken into the next level. And then all these innovations/cost effectiveness plans, more thought process from the government will come into picture and utilized to its fullest extent.

The only way is by do or die attitude. We have become so lazy that only when the flood will come we will start building the boats. People should be heavily punished for every sec they waste from getting the job done on time.

jugaad arises or is used only when we are lacking time & resources thus it can be improved by proper resources planning and better time management.if we observe jugaad also ads cost saving process to the industry thereby reducing the overall expenditure

Motivate Jugaad strategically

idea posted by Santosh A. Jadhav Sr. Officer Sales

It will be killing if we are thinking for changing our mindsets and culture,,, Indians are very well known and admired across the countries due their one of best qualities and it is JUGAAD,,,

we just have to strategically craft / modify / motivate these Jugaad's into efficient and resource conservative Innovations...

I've previously also commented on Jugaad the following is the best example for that -

I was working with a heavy engineering company we were manufacturing very difficult parts for big MNC's across the world.. once 5 jobs were returned back to us from Germany as the OD was found 10micron oversize, as the OD was around 2500mm the job cannot be trued again on the machine and hence the jobs were rejected .... But WE Indian (Proud to be) me and my collegues and our senior we changed the whole scenario in a single night shift ..what we did was JUGAAD (cant tell here what we did) but seriously telling you all the jobs were again inspected and found OK... till now those german engineers are sending us mail and asking us what we did .... I'm really proud to be an Indian as we wake up where other's had left the game .. hats off to JUGAAD
