The world is going green. Globally we are recognizing that natural resources are limited and we are taking steps to preserve these resources. We are collectively realizing that we don’t have an unlimited amount of air or water or space to continue to utilize resources like we have in the past. How can we apply “green” concepts to our project management discipline?

Reduce energy consumption

idea posted by Pragya Kothari Construction-Heavy, DLF

Green project management starts with establishing a culture of responsibility and sustainability in your requirements from project team members. We should use energy efficient products for our project which can reduce the consumption of energy. Like Switch to laptop computers rather than desktops as they require less energy and space. Run your laptop and other rechargeable devices on battery power as much as possible to reduce your consumption of electricity and extend the life of your batteries. So friends lets save energy and make our projects green.

Low carbon construction is now in priority list of Uk government strategy for future constructions. Focus has been given on minimum consumption of energy in any process of civil engineering works. This concept has also been addressed by ex president prof. Abdul Kalam. In a country like India where more than 1 billion people are living, now it is too essential to implement this concept from grass root level, right from our home to big industries.

Specially in construction sector new technologies should be developed to manufacure each and every component used in construction (manufacturing of brick, cement etc.) which consume minimum possible energy. The design of structural components should be optimum and quality of material should be very high. Those materials which gives good strength and produce less carbon during use along with proper methodologies for their use should be focussed.

Green building is priority for a society, can be created  by indulging local peoples, ancient and conventional methots of saving water and energy.Energy can be saved by using maximum day light,LED lights and solar systems, water can be recycled, rain water harvesting and desalination of water in coastal areas.During design all climatic parameters should be considered.

Reducing energy consumption is definately best option for going green, but also parallel way of going green during the construction is potential ways of monitoring & controlling parameters, which will reduce the waste, new concepts of design by involving rain water harvesting system, solid waste management system, also the concept of Building management system is much more in demand for monitoring & controlling HVAC & Water management systems which will reduce energy consumption.

Recycling

idea posted by Samir Das Tech Architect, Infosys

Going green has become a topic that is becoming difficult to ignore because of the lack of resources. So as a project manager, maybe it’s time to think about Green Project Management (GreenPM). By recycling the materials used in our project may lead to green. For instance, when creating your project paper-based deliverables ensure that you are using recycled paper, instead of sending your waste to a landfill, try finding a recycling company and use eco-friendly packaging in products produced. So we should take the environment into account during a project rather than simply ignoring it.

I totally agree with Sameer, using green specifications for project management will always be beneficial for the enviornment. As rightly mentioned about the use of paper. But there many unnoticed ways of going green like asking the staff on sites to avoid use of Air conditioners when not required, making a rule of keepig screens of desktop with no screen savers and desktop themes and to keep it black in color, using used paper for rough sketches and prileminary/schematic drawings, avoid using carpets in offices(as use of vaccum cleaners can be avoided),switching off lights during daytime when not required, charging mobile phones through computers instead of seperatly charging it(if desktops are used instead of laptops) , and making it mandatory for all staff to plant one sappling every month in the premise of the site. One saying in marathi applies very well here-- thembe thembe taala saache -meaning every single drop adds to creatiion of a lake)

Green Procurement

idea posted by Dipen Trivedi Project Manager, 3i Infotech

Dear friend, an organization that follows GreenPM can add environment considerations into its procurement process. Since Procurement is often “larger” than a project or project manager, an organization initially needs to determine where green procurement resides. When practicing GreenPM on specific projects you should first look to see if your organization has an Environmental Management Policy (or something similar) and green procurement processes aligned to your environmental standards. If so, then you should make sure that your project aligns to these environmental policies and green procurement processes as well.

Let us plant trees where ever we can. There are NGOs who are doing it. We should lend our support to them. Planting trees alone will bring about great revolution for all living beings on earth.

I agree with Gautam the only solution is everyone should realize the importance of the plants and start growing it to survive. So to go green in project management try to reuse and use recyclable products in developing a project. So to get green products you need plants and trees. Go Green by growing green plants.

Initially, in olden days where ever the construction done, there would be a pond (which was created due to the excavated earth of construction-eg-construction of MEENAKSHI TEMPLE-pond-Theppakullam-madurai).But We are making chain of road network spending crores of ruppes-for embankment  and construction materials we are excavating to huge depth. That may be converted to percolation ponds by spending a very least amount itself.

There are huge IT parks in our cities .for land scapping and lighting the same thry are spending huge amounts. Instead of using electricity for the total requirement in external fittings they may use  atleast 80% of lights as solar energy consumable.

In Infra structure projects, there is need to look at Air, water, soil, forest and green belt conservation along with rain water (runoffs) harvesting, use of renewable resources of energy in process equipments, proper reuse of waste materials and treatment, if possible

The projects where I have worked recently do not give importance to use of solar, wind and other natural energies for lighting, which needs to be looked into as well as converting  / generating energy from Highway Road bumpers where the research is already on ...

Go for Green Buildings and carbon Credit Concepts

idea posted by Khalil Qureshi Civil Engineer-Other, IGBC AP, Free Lancer

I suggest we all should all opt for offices and homes in a Green Building, because it covers all the possible ways we can go green. To list a few

1) Green Building supports energy efficiency, reduces water usage, suports Indoor Environment and Air quality.

2) Supports reuse and recycling of material thus avoiding mining for new construction material.

3) Green Buiding supports Car Pooling and energy efficient cars by allowing special parking slots for such cars and services.

4) Improves working condition within a building thereby improving employee efficiency.

These are just some of the benefits of a Green Building apart from that we can look into carbon credits which can help us check our carbon footprints and keeps us informed of our actions.

We are speaking about green . but we have forgotten from where we come from.

all offices are air conditioned to maintain our dignity.all are using  vechicles whether it is necessary are not.from our compamy guest house to site ,company vechicle will take three trips to pick up site staffs who have to travel only a kilometre/ we stopped that non sense by walking ourselves .

another thing diesel generators; that will run without any planning or any reasons . sometimes for laying a concrete which is very less even the cost of diesel.or one man will chat in the office saying that he is working/

we forgot the tumblers/plates such like things// for pride and making ourselves big shots/by saving debris all around of us.we are using disposal cups and ,,/debris  creators

what we are using in our offices- not papers-not documents- only wastes. we can use the other side of the papers for our inter office communications.

atleast we can recycle the rain warer for curing and in tower buildings controlling the usage of water by- sump to floors to sump- method

We  have to remember the man- who is  under the shadow of tree, praying to sky for rain, -before igniting the innova and pulsar and aircon.

thanks.

Implementation

idea posted by Mohammed Abdul Bari Network Support Engineer@ETISALAT, Dubai

There are many ways to GREEN concept even in our regular life just we have to implement it. I agree with pragya for her idea “power consumption” and by Khalil “go for green buildings and carbon credit concepts” in such a way every person have there own ideas just we have to implement it in our regular life. We have to care for feature also, like building the homes with more ventilation in every room so there is no need of power utilization and also gardening at home which will make green and healthy environment.

Less utilization of the motors, keeping the environment clean and green, dust free…etc will make the green concept true. So implementation in each and own individual ideas will really make the GREEN concept true.

Make it mandatory by law

idea posted by sandeep sheregar Financial Planning, wealth management & Investment planning,

We all would agree that there are many things in life that we do only because it is mandatory by law or it is compulsory, though there could be many people who violate it. The prominent among them are.                    1. Paying Income tax and most other taxes                                                                                          2.Observing traffic rules.                                                                                                               3.Buying Train pass or ticket                                                                                                                   4. Observing most of the laws prevalent                                                                                                   5. Paying most of the statutory charges like stamp duty etc.

Similarly to implement green concepts not just in project management discipline but in all walks of life, the government should make it compulsory and mandatory by law and make it heavily punishable with imprisonment and heavy penalty so that no one should dare to violate it. The most important among them should be made applicable to builders and developers.                                                                                                                                          1. Making it compulsory by law to install solar energy system in all the upcoming building projects be it residential or commercial or any other purpose.                                                                                        2. Incorporating Rain water harvesting system and draing water recycling system in all the upcoming building projects                                                                                                                                                3. Complete ban on manufacturing Incandescent bulbs and making it compulsory to install only flourascent tubes or CFL bulbs in any premises.                                                                                                 4. Complete ban on cutting down any tree instead, they should incorporate complete tree transplantation system where if at all any tree is to be cut down , it should rather be transplanted to some other suitable place.

5. A blanket ban on any kind of residential, commercial or social  activity in the CRZ area and forest area.

We can definitely get these things done provided many organization and prominent people come together on one platform to work for the common cause. And I thing this responsiblity lies on our shoulders of the younger Generation.  Any cooperation from myside is assured.

A Consideration to Equipment Reuse

idea posted by Gary Stevenson Sales Manager, Oilfield Machinery Ltd
Our current research is showing that the reuse of steel machinery (instead of buying new) can save between 10 & 20 tonnes (depending on machine type) of CO2 for every 1 tonne of steel equipment reused. How many people consider reuse at the start of a project?

Create a Model Team and Spread the Word

idea posted by Murali Krishna Kesapragada CEO/MD/Director, Versatile World

According to me, the best way to do it is to make your project team a "Model Team" in approaching the Project in an environmental friendly way. Here is a small idea how to do it.

Remember this should be done during the entire project duration. Whats important is to DOCUMENT the entire process and let the ENTIRE WORLD know what you have done. One team does it, every other team wants to do it .. and slowing it becomes a culture.. a welcome one.

  • Entire team Car pools  / uses public transport.
  • Every print out taken during the entire project process should have a strong reason and the papers are reused where it can. Proper documenting is required to calculate the number of papers and the amount of prints saved.
  • The entire team uses as little plastic during the duration of the project.
  • The team plants a tree on every milestone reached.
  • The monitors are switched off whenever the computer is not being used. The amount of power saved is calculated.

The above are only a few pointers. A comprehensive list of actionable items needs to be prepared with the inputs from entire team. Only involvement works in this case. These should not be forced, so, it better to put together a team which thinks in similar lines.

The projects are becoming larger and more complex to handle. Globally we are recognizing the issues of coordination and planning projects successfully and we are taking steps to prevent delays. We are collectively realizing that we don’t have effective utilize of resources . How can we apply “Supply Chain Management SCM” concepts to our project management discipline or in construction industry?

Going green-A Hollistic view

idea posted by Vinod Nakra Head/VP/GM-Corporate Advisory, Larsen & Toubro Ltd
Green concepts in Project Management should begin with the concept stage, followed by design, tendering, planning and finally construction stage. A hollistic view can be taken only if our present system of tendering is overhauled. Instead of appointing 'consultants' who evolve designs and technical specifications, while contractors execute the same, there is need to go for Design & Build Contracts where only the very best and technically sound parties are pre qualified to provide end to end soulutions to sustainable development. Thus we are looking at an entirely different way of finding solutions aimed at green Project Managment which will bring down carbon emissions and delay global warming. Such an appraoch might not appear to be very econnomical in the conventional sense but will pay rich dividends in achieving the ultimate goal of saving the globe.

yes .now a days we cut all the Tamarin trees which were at roadsides very long time. They  are naturally sound proof bodies and absorbs sound waves.we cleared them all to widen the roads and constructing malls .Periyar improvement a prestigeous project of 1000 crores value to supply water fir fiels by controlling wastages of water. Now all agricultural lands are vanished. all lands converted to residential plots/ now our agricultural country importing dall and rice from china.

what is green in PM?

idea posted by RAMESH KANDADAI Principal Consultant, ARM Consultants

One thought is that not being green should be considered a risk in PM. What is lacking now is at the most fundamental levels.....for example for the green concept to be part of PM, it needs to be integrated at all levels from paperless office to the consideration of the impact on env. of the product you are delivering to the client. What we need is first to clear up the basics. What constitutes green project management? can some one help in coming with the list?

My contribution:

1. Environment/ecological impact analysis of the product or service being developed for the client.

2. Inculcate significantly reduced consumption of paper in any form for the project by enabling all work on line.
