Bangalore is fast losing its green cover in the name of easing traffic congestion. What bothers citizens is that other options to road widening are not being considered and their pleas are ignored. They’re also angry that the BBMP has not kept its promise of planting saplings to make up for the loss. Better planning would have helped the city retain its green cover.

With the help of Hercules helicopter

idea posted by Sharad Gupta Software Developer, CG Mumbai

Hire an Hercules helicopter from the Army (which can lift an Army tank weighing around 70 tonnes) . Lift the trees and plant them at a safe place. This is routinely done in foreign countries.

The idea from Vidhu Dhar is ideal but it is a long term perspective. However something must be done to stop the realty sector from ruining the land profile in the immediate.

I am so happy & I would like to thank Mr. Sharad Gupta for thinking about not cutting the trees. I agree with Mr. Vidhu Dar's & Sharad Guptas ideas.

Begin from extreme ends

idea posted by Ravindra Sharma Managing Consultant, CHEF-India

Normally... in India Roads are built and widened from middle to sides.

Meaning if the total width allocated is 50 units they would make a road starting middle at 25 and gradually make it wider by adding on sides.

Instead if we develop and complete sides first ie begin from 0 and 50 alongside planting trees on both sides and center. No tree would ever require uprooting or relocation, while  it would as well take care of unwanted encroachment that is so prevalent.

Excellent idea Mr Ravindra Sharma. I was thinking of this very thing a few months ago. The trees should be left in place and the road should be widened either side of the trees. The line of trees would form the lane dividers. Of course, this means that some trees would have to be relocated to allow for lane changes, etc. I also very much like the idea of further planting of trees on the sides to reduce encroachment. Thanks for the referral Vinoy Scaria.

Right. China has been doing so for well over a decade. They uproot a fully grown tree and transplant it where it is needed more.

Great idea Narayan..Plant them in the middle instead of at the sides. Probably we can also begin research on flying cars which is still at conceptual stage so that we need not think of widening roads. Each of us can script a chitty chitty bang bang story in us only for the betterment of our planet.

planting & re-planting may not be, at times cost effective. So, in the beginning itself plan properly & detour the road accordingly. Govt can think of acquiring enough land so that the divider can be kept as the existing tree-lines intact.

Cutting the trees which were more than 100 years old,and making facilities for the booming traffic is an idiotic one. When we lived eco friendly, the nature helped us much. Now we forgotten our Nature and we live for our ambition and to neighbors envoy.Hence this traffic in roads.I saw more than 200 cars queuing in a signal in Madras city, having only one man in the driver seat.We want to show us as a rich and wealthy man and for the poor around us.Making the roads noisy, polluting with smoke, making the Govt: economically weak.GOVt: is loosing its foreign exchange more than 33% in petrol trading only. Why govt has to donate subsidy for these greedy car owners and levying tax for the same deeeeeeficiet  to the poor, who is untouchable for these white colors. The heaviest traffic to be cut down easily by forcing them in a right corner.controlling the traffic and monitoring in a right direction ,reducing them as far as possible, making the Public to use Public vehicles as far as possible instead of cutting the trees and widening the roads. The swelling of traffic jam will have never end.Mettupalayam to coimbatore road widening is under progress (by widening 7.5 metres on both extremes) by cutting more than 50 trees for one K.M.which were more than 32 years old. Can you Grow them now.We are her only to destroy the Natures wealth by using A/C even in cars and traveling ,our skin are so soft and like that our immune system. We deserted our green Valley by living as an AMERICAN In INDIA.

Reversal of the plan is the only option, as it is foolishness to replant the trees.

Plant two saplings for a tree cut.

idea posted by Shameena W. Admin Manager, Wizcraft Inc.
It becomes inevitable for a tree to be cut especially in major infrastructre projects. However we got to ensure that the government or the firm that undertakes the project got to ensure that a equal if not more number of tree sapling are planted. In fact the new project should be commissioned only if the trees are substituted. Maybe we can have a body overlooking this process. If possible the company or government responsible should bear the responsibility of looking after this planted sapling for a given period. Or sponsor the same. This will ensure that companies will try to minimize the chopping of the trees in a new project to reduce their project cost.

transfer of plants

idea posted by rosalie de la cruz Civil Engineer -Telecom, UTECH
As the area becomes populated, road widening comes next to avoid traffic congestion. Those Trees that are greatly affected by road widening should be relocated or transplanted to other areas. Those trees that needs to be harvested should be cut and used commercially or locally, then, there is replanting to replace cut trees.

That can be a tough decision. It is true that people need space and trees need space. It really depends on the location and more thought needs to be put into where the trees will be cut. I do agree with Omkar, that you need to replace a tree if you cut one.

Sometimes depending on the area, certain trees don't need to be cut. It's bad for the environment if you cut too many trees. There really needs to be a lot of strategic thinking on this and strategic planning.

DEVELOP FLYING VEHICLES

idea posted by PS Dhingra CEO & Vigilance & Transformation Management Consultant, Dhingra Group of Management & Educational Consultants

The only alternative in the scenario of ever growing population and resultant vehicles seems to be to develop and introduce flying motorcycles, Scooters, cars, trucks, buses, etc. Allow only the bicycles on the roads. There will therefore be no need to widen the roads and chop down the trees for that purpose.

OR

Alternatively close down all the automobile industries.

WHEN URBAN PLANNING & ROAD PLANNING ARE DEFECTIVE AND NOT MADE KEEPING IN VIEW OF POPULATION EXPLOSION & EXPANSION OF AUTO INDUSTRIES, WHAT ELSE YOU CAN THINK ABOUT?

idea posted by Apeksha IT/Technical Editor,
Monitor the traffic movement. Draft plans if the road can be made one-way- the study the pros and cos of it- the impact of going about with such a move. Check out what kind of vehicles ply on the road. Private vehicles, public transport, company cabs, autos, etc. Check the time ( the peak time - hours the traffic is too congested) Try out if the vehicles can be de-regulated. Co-ordinate with the RTO and traffic controlller- check how many vehicles(new ) are getting registed.. can we put a tab on that too. there are ways, chopping trees is not the only solution

For our Echo-friendly attitude, instead of sickening by the way the De-forestation and cutting the trees with a reason of widening the roads is on in many of our cities, it is better not to plant them only first of all. we do not know to regard either plants or people!

Create more underpasses ...

idea posted by Jaygopal Raghavan Marketing Manager, Landmark Group
That way the trees can be transplanted to another place till the under pass in built and then transplanted back to its original spot above the underpass. Most of the Gulf countries have marvellous road infrastructure where they have imaginatively used underpassess and over pass bridges to ensure smooth flow of traffic. Within city limits it is more of underpasses as constructing bridges take a lot of time, resource and need land acquisition. Under passes are highly effective in ensuring a smooth flow of traffic and will reduce cattle and men crossing the road as and when they prefer like in india. Even motorists who do not drive carefully will be forced to go a long way for a u-turn so this makes driving safe and responsibe too as you have to plan your drive beforehand and stick to the plan. No more taking a u-turn or turning corners suddenly when you feel the fancy of doing so.
