Let us all contribute some ideas to reduce the respirable SPM levels around any construction site so as to keep the air free from haze and brown clouds and keep in check the city's pollution level.

Giving more power to Environmental department

idea posted by Pragya Kothari Construction-Heavy, DLF

With this one can take actions immediately on the construction site where there is more SPM, and can take action against the contractor or the builder if they are not following the rules and regulations. and it is seen that on a daily basis the SPM levels in most of the cities it is raising and it is a concern for the authorities to control the SPM levels, so to make sure that the SPM levels are kept in check one should give the environmental department more power to take strict actions.

I strongly agree with Mr.Pragya Kothari that empowering environmental department will improve control mechanism in addition to which Civic bodies should also either amend existing laws or create new laws to restrict vechicles carrying sand / excavated earth / construction debris / garbage during day time and allow these operations in covered truck during night time only.

I Strongly agree what the Pragya Kothari is coming to tell. With comparing the options my vote is for "Giving More Power to Environment department". If this department is doing their work more effectively means, a formation of rules & regulation in another 3 options under the Environment departments control.

USE OF LATEST PLANTS AND EQUIPMENTS AND LATEST TECHNOLOGY

idea posted by Yogendra Singh Chauhan Civil Engineer-Highway Roadway, AECOM

Use of latest plants and equipments along with latest technology can reduce the overall air pollution around construction site............i.e. use of pollution free Hot mix plant and concrete batching plant, use of water sprinkling system in dust prone areas, plantation at construction site, use of environment friendly construction material and mixes.......etc. etc.........and of course Environmental agency has to work hard to make it implemented...

Better site management.

idea posted by H K Prabhakar Project Management & Recruitments

On construction sits, SPM increases due to following main reasons:

1. Actual digging of earth work.

2. Movement of transport vehicles on earthen tracks.

3. Presence of crushers very near to construction sites.

As for point 1, the dust generated can be greatly reduced by employing heavy machinery. It minimizes the dust, as well as reduces digging time.

Regarding point 2, it is worth while to make these tracks semi permanent by laying broken brick ballast or other such other cheap or discarded material. For those tracks which are not worth laying these, regular sprinkling of water helps. Sprinkling should be resorted to for alleartehn areas.

For point 3, Now crushers at the construction site help save transportation costs, but to make the SPM content to permissible levels, it is worth to locate them some diatance away.

Civic bodies to create some mandatory rules

idea posted by Joy Ranjan Hiwale Construction-Sr.engineer .vascon engineers limited

some new rules must be created to control the air pollution and brown cloud formation near construction areas like barrication of site, sprinklers at dumpyards of aggregates and sand, plantation of trees, checking of puc of vehicles at the site, providing chimneys for generators or dg sets and also acoustic enclosing.

Commitment of the Organizations & Individuals

idea posted by Raj Mahender Project Management Consultant at freelance

The impact to the enviroment caused by the construction industry is very high.  Right from the commencement activity, all activities are directly or indirectly deplete our natural resources.

SPM is a measure of one of such impact to the ambient air. Just by controllig the symptom one can not get rid of the problem. The root cause for the problem is to be analysed and corrective and preventive action to be taken.

When we conduct Enivronment Impact Assesment on the constuction site the high intensity impacts can be identified and response strategy can be planned.

Any such environment protection should start with "Creating Awareness" among the entire community If the organizations &  Individuals are not aware of the impact they are causing to the environment, "Policing" agencies like environment bodies will not have control over the acts.

To save our world the prime requiremetn is - All organizations and We Individuals should have definite commitment to prevent the nature by minimysing the impact to the environment. Then only any other measures  to save mother nature will be effective.
