Nowadays consultancy in the construction field is seen as white coller profession.Often it is pointed out the client organizations spend more in employing the right bunch of consultants for their projects. what can be or what should be the criteria of selection?

Criteria for Judging the Effectiveness of the Project Management consultants

  • His past history in the Previous projects handled
  • Various Cost effective Methodologies employed by him during project management.
  • Exercise of strict quality control measures
  • By the Bio datas of his team members

Mr.Vivek, the situation is same in everywhere. that is human tendency to supervise other's work. confrontation arise in team due to this only and a good PMC also have skill to overcome with this. Although it is area of concern of project manager but PMC also advise him based on his experienced. one thing also need to mention here as james hinted that on table knowledge is not sufficient, field experience more accountable. I agree with that cencern but support of PM tools and technique must be there and every PMC must have sound knowledge of PM tools & techniques.

James, although you have gone a bit out of subject but the concern raised by you is very true. We in India have the same problem. But we often give example of western countries where engineers are thought (by us) to be more practical and planners are perceived (by us) as more realistic. If the same scenario, i.e. to become the boss without swetting out at site, is there also then I dont know how to react.

Employment may be given on probation basis after selecting on the basis of CV and interview,then after the certain decided period revalueate the progress and output of the cosultant should be finalized.

First of all the idea of having a Project Management Consultant/Consultancy (PMC) in construction is not a very potent thought. A PMC should be selected for a project depending on the nature of the project. For example if it is a Industrial Park Development , IT / ITeS Park, SEZ, Township, Residential Estates , Commercial Estate, Logistic Parks, Ports etc. (I mention names of project which  involves massive construction and are multi- dimensional).  The project promoter must look at the profile of the consultant depending on the projects he wishes to invest in.

Though the above mentioned projects involves massive construction each of them has it’s own unique characteristics. The PMC should be well versed with the characteristics of the Project in order to do justice to the project as a consultant. Hence the selection criteria should be the domain knowledge of the consultant in the Project that the promoter wishes to invest in. Once again Construction is just a part of it and as a consultant to the client you need to monitor time and cost and resource mobilization of the construction contractor(s) who is taking care of the construction part of the project.

i am totally agree with u mr roy..domain knowledge is very important for the consultant keeping concern with time and resource mobilization.. in any constuction  project..i would like to support  dixit sir  for his ie valuation of consultant after probation .. thanks

PMP with good Domain Knowledge & Experience shall be the ULTIMATE CHOICE for PMC..

Its a difficult exercise in India but best option is to go for right qualification first.

Further to the view of mr Mohammad Bakhsh, From Budget to closing of the projects the consultant who are selected must have all packages requirement on the respective projects and time frame for scope documents/eng & planning/estimation and constrcution starting time /closing time and monitoring mechanism needs to be asceratined as a prooven skill of consultant. Dear Vivek view are not always true, for PMC., for technology wise may be yes.Out side India I have come accross so many Indian/Asian holding key role
