A natural disaster is the consequence of a natural hazard (e.g. volcanic eruption, earthquake, or landslide etc.,) which affects human activities. Human vulnerability, exacerbated by the lack of planning or lack of appropriate emergency management, leads to financial, environmental or human losses. How we should project to reduce effects of natural disaster.

Reducing Risks

idea posted by Ravina Gaikwad Project Manager, SAIL
Not many in the general public are aware of Reducing Risks, disaster risk reduction starts from the premise that local communities and governments can indeed take measures to reduce death,They must focus on building capacity for early warning for both identification of an event and also dissemination techniques for reaching out to the population living in the danger zone.

Years and years on, we face exactly the same floods, same earthquakes, same miseries and same famines. And add to that long list the terroist acts now. We get to hear and read the same - we will not tolerate this and that.

Please find out and read what the Netherlands had done as far back as in 1932 or so to prevent floods tormenting its people on its North-Western shores.

No Kosi or any such river there can overflow its banks now. But here, in spite of billions having been spent year after year, people still suffer the very same way. 1200 millions and counting are too dispensable, perhaps.

We produce best civil engineers in the world. Yet we cannot design a barrier to floods. We cannot design a building that can stand properly to face an earthquake. REmember that famous photograph nearly nine years ago in Gujarat, where-in a lift well standing amid ruins all aound is cursing itself.

And what mitigation can we do?

In Mexico, after an earthquake now they have installed early warning systems (take only the example of Acapulco) all over. And have mock drills to educate and practice people to thwart the ill effects of earthquakes.

What are we doing.

But good you have started this debate. To what result, we will wait and see.

Perhaps as a Nation our conscience has to be stirred to fight and overcome the trials and tribulations that our humanity goes through. No amount of empty talks are of any worth or value.

Hope; is still there. Nevertheless.

Mitigation

We must recognize the huge impact climatic change is having on weather patterns, hydro-meteorological phenomena, and the frequency, intensity and unpredictability of natural hazards. Without mitigation, these calamities will leave nations and people ever more vulnerable to devastation
