Today when I was reading the news in NDTV - http://green.ndtv.com/, I was truly astonished to see the tremendous success NDTV Toyota Greenathon has gained throughout the country. Within a single day the successful programme was able to raise a fund of Rs. 2 crore & 45 lakhs for the poorest in the major regions of the country. Including Preity Zinta as the ambassador of the campaign many other celebrities were participants for the same at different places of the nation.

As this campaign has earned a huge success now but still a question comes up in my mind how can we scale up?

What are the other innovative ways to implement "Green India"?

Please do share your valuable ideas & thoughts on the same.

idea posted by Raghu Kastury Principal Consultant & Head of Strategic Business Unit - Retail & Distribution, Sundaram Infotech Solutions Limited

Every Indian should be held responsible to plant one new tree in a public place and maintain it permanantly.

Every Indian who owns more than one car should be asked to pay for one new tree to be planted and maintained by him / her

Every Indian who consumes more than stipulated amount of electricity or fuels or gas should pay for planting new trees apart from his / her regular electricity bills

Every corporate, that is environmentally unfriendly should be assigned the responsibilty to plant new trees every year in public places and maintain them

Green India - Corporate Advantage + Societal Benefit (Must for everyone)

idea posted by Dayanand Deshpande Senior Consultant, Ernst & Young

Great Idea Contest Himanshu & thanks for the referral Japan Shah.....

Already you guys have stated feasible ideas, so here is my take: Going green should be looked as a corporate advantage and an opportunity for humanity to enable change. I can see Green India if we invest in Green Power, Green Fuels & Transport, Green Buildings and Green IT. India should extensively invest in these areas in terms of research & innovation.

Companies in India are pursuing the green agenda in small, disjointed rather should be very aggressive & carry out in a purposeful way like:-

  1. Everyone should strive for Leed Certification.
  2. Companies with glass buildings should go in for nano-tech film and generate small amount of power themselves. It seems six thousand square feet of glass face can generate 108 kw of power every day.
  3. One should go for e-bill rather than the paper bill.
  4. Instead of paper, everyone should look at pen drives as an eco-friendly substitute.
  5. As IT Companies have to deal with lot of data, they should look at putting up plants inside the server rooms to keep them cool & also it would be great if data center is in an underground facility.

It is a good start & we should go full hog when it comes to energy conservation.........

Ideas given here by Dayanand Deshpande and by Raghu Kastury are very good.It would be really good that Corporate Sectors also get involved in such kind of activities and aswell we too, as an individual, should start up with such implementaions to achive "Green  India".

I strongly agree with the point. WE at TATA MOTORS LTd have undertaken the green initiative wherein it is adopted as a policy for the company & all the dealers. The dealers need to plant trees in their campuses & have effluent treatment plant in the campus.

Green India initiative needs multipronged startegies by the Government.

1. Containing deforestation.

2.Making it mandatory for civic authorities to instal Green Parks in terms of trees per 1000 people population.

3. Containing consumption of wood for fuel, paper and furniture.

Initiatives by individuals or groups will produce results, but may not be sustainable.

Leave Luxuries

idea posted by Darshil CEO/MD/Director, Darshil Cotton Company

We are talking about green India but the actual meaning is different. We need to give up our luxurious life first and then talk about the global warming because the major carbon gets emmitted from the Air conditioners which is in the maximum use these days compared to the last decade. On an average in a single house there are atleast 2 A/C's and @ A/C's in single office.

So just calculate the amount of carbon we are emmitting daily. So before going green by simply planting it's better we reduce carbon emmission in the environment which would have rapid effect on global warming.

Luxury means something which is not a necessity.so why add it to create problems.any luxury item uses energy which contributes to global warming.luxury is something which we can live without.

Air conditioning is not a luxury any more when the fresher’s salaries start at 3 Lacs/annum.

Absence of the person for may cost the business over Rs. 2000 per day. That is the total bill for his one month’s air conditioner use.

However, one has to balance the need for indoor comfort for productivity and cost the society pays for using energy to achieve that. We need to reduce the energy used by air conditioners instead of sacrificing the productivity and human comfort.

Millions of dollars are being invested all over the world to make air conditioners more energy efficient. Use of alternative and sustainable energy technologies for air conditioning will become common in the very near future.

India is already having technologies today that can reduce the energy input for air conditioners by as much as 50% or more. Have a look at www.unidyne-energy.com .The company’s air conditioning devices are a new solution to save energy in  air conditioning installations.

Going Green in text and actually GOING GREEN r 2 different things. Look around the office, where v spent most part of our days, almost invariably u will find unwanted fans, lights, acs running without ppl around, look at the amount of water wasted at office toilets/restrooms. Awareness is the key. If the top management is passionate about energy conservation, it should adopt stringent methods to ensure minimal usage of precious energy and conservation of natural resources such as water. Scrimping and saving should be permeated right to the bottom of the ladder at each and every opportunity, so that switching off unused lights/fans/acs, saving water, becomes a habit rather than a conscious act.

Let us popularize use of Bicycles on Sundays and holidays and Government declare holiday for petrol pumps on Sundays/holidays

Let all the schools hold Nature and Environment retreat for 2 weeks in Nature park and students given assignment on making eco-friendly products with prizes for best 100 or more to popularize awareness for environment protection ...

Solar Cookers/heaters must become the talk of the day for domestic use on a wider scale in rural areas and Government must give more subsidy and grants to manufacturers ...

Hydrogen is projected as the Fuel of The future ... Hydrogen in cylinders or some plant substitute or bio-fuel can be used with air/oxygen combustion in the automobile engine with little modification in the engine ... I feel it is good idea for research/experiment ...

We now have to reach more remote villages situated in the deepest part of the country which are not even heard familiar with us, because there lives the poorest people of the country who have not even ever seen the bright light of the day.

We also have to concentrate on the present issues of the urban areas such as increased carbon emission, availability of water, pollution in different aspects etc.

The achievements of Greenathon is that they have provided solar lamps to numerous students in villages, planted trees in plain lands, cleaned the beaches etc. & roped many celebrities to be part of their programme.

As there had been some very positive outlook on action generation.

A suggestion at least all those members of “toosteps” who have given their opinions ask them to gear up and get into action, in their respective cities and you ask your Channel to cover that news.

The big metro cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkota & second tier cities-citizen must take the initiative of water harvesting. So much tons of rain water is lost in drains, every year.

Just like essentials of modern life TV, fridge, Washing machine, etc. Each and every educated citizen should insist on having a rain water harvesting plant. Whether it be bunglows, housing societies or apartments. We must conserve water so a large part of population can get more water and it reaches the poor sections of the metros, towns and villages.

Also along with this power should be cultivated by educated class. Green power, sun realted power equipments.

How?

This is the stance every Indian should practice-

I will respect other people’s property

I will not take a leak by the road side, no matter how urgent the call of nature may be!

I will drive my car and listen to the music myself instead of imposing it on others.

Reduce to blow horn, be patient.

Not park my vehicle at the place marked for green plants and trees.

Will not break the bifurcations and create a short-cut of my use.

I agree with you, but a whole generation of Indians must strive to do this only then a change can happen in India. We must whole heartedly support such inititatives my government or semi-government organisation. An as educated class we must not make issue inconvience caused by any such intitatives taken by municipal, state, government and local society drives.

We are very good at pointing fingers and also expert in giving opinions, but when such initiatives are announced we must support it in kind and cash and also set example for others..

In parking place it is forgotten, while waiting at the red signal it is forgotten...we do not even allow the other person to overtake, but ensure everything is jammed in the process.

A desicive steps with right knowledge must be taken and without making too much fuss about it.

How can we implement "Green India"

idea posted by arvind Head/VP/GM-Marketing, sahyadri industries ltd

Every Individual counts when we talk of Green India, Therefore if multinational  companies who have their products being sold all over India print environment improvement messages which will educate the masses will help, Petrol, Diesel, Kerosane, oil etc are required by every individual be it urban or rural india and hence at petrol pumps and ration stores if material on how to get the best from these product without emitting green house gases can be explained  it will help. It a big effort, but has to be started, and the first issues which are vital like co2 emmision, fresh water scarcity, Global warming should be dealt with. Schools should start educating and social activities highlighting that natural resources are not permant should be made clear to everyone.

Mr Raghu Kastury has read me wrong, already there are sales messages on the packing of all multinational product, these messages have to be edited and a place be created for an environment friendly messages.(Surly that much of ink will not burden the environment). This way the multinationals will also be doing a little bit of social responsibility work, and his views for laws to be implemented, won't this benefit shaddy govt. official. Already the common man is exploited by these so called gaurdians why create more trouble for them, because the rich and Influentials will have ways of going around.

printing itself is environmentally un friendly.

Educating and bringing awareness is only knowledge transfer. By the time it gets translated into action, a lot of it gets filtered and only a fraction of a percentage will appear in action and it will have its own death.

Secondly, its human nature not to abide by, unless it is made in to law and enforced. Just switch off the signals at a busy junction and see, to understand what I am saying.

So we must make laws relating to this and the ID project Mr. Nandan Nelkeni (Ex infosys) is doing should be assigned this responsibility. So that every tree will have the same ID as the individual.

I know just planting trees is not enough, but it is a significant part of protecting the environment.

Changing the color of this text to greem may not help that much I suppose !!!!!

What is more important is to create awareness among the people, this is what NDTV did and got success. Once you will saart creating awarness, steps will be taken by people, because still lot of people are not aware why are we going for the GREEN inititaves.

In India also there are severalk other important problems other than this, i belive that creating awarness is need of the hour...

I was thinking about it for vey long time. In Tamil nadu, rain water harvesting system was successfully implemented by law, every house have it now.

Like that every house and plot owner should raise one tree each, failing should cause problems in accessing government services. This will definitely create greener india within 5 years and will eleminate most of health problems caused by excess hot weather.

Kudos to Mr Vijayasaravanan,  I think you have an excellent idea.  Rules should be made and implemented for planting trees and water harvesting.  Just 3 days back there was an article in the Mumbai Mirror that billions of litres of rain water flows directly to the sea from Mumbai and that if this is harvested properly, then there will be not a single day of water cut in Mumbai.

Also some kind of rule should be framed to plant trees  e.g. minimum 2 trees should be compulsorily planted by every couple applying for marriage registration certificate and one each by their 2 accompanying witnesses. Minimum 100 trees should be planted by anyone approaching the ministry of education for opening a new school or college. etc.

1) Provide LPG and alternate fuel to the nomads and tribal community.  They will stop cutting trees for fuel.

2) Implement paper-less office everywhere, as a rule.

3) Do not force children to buy copies and books.  Inculcate e-education.  Make their education a fun-filled journey.  Give them skill-oriented education, rather than bookish knowledge.

4) Develop the cycling habit and impose regulations to use cycles on the road.  Reduce the number of automobiles that ply on the road.  Modernise public transport system and make them user-friendly.  Give public transport contracts only to the top-notch private players who would organize and regulate mass traffic without any fuss. This will limit emission of green house gases.

5) Every child who attends public school should be asked to plant one sapling every month, either in the school, or his colony or at his residence or the area where greenery is possible.  Make it a compulsory habit.

6) Shift Government offices to the outskirts in order to de-congest the main cities.

7) As a Corporate Social Responsibility, we should inculcate "Citizen Social Responsibility" and every citizen should contribute at least 2% of his annual earning on the village he belongs to.  Reverse talent flow will force the government to think for the villages for the villagers would be the informed citizens on every sphere of activity that affects/effects them.

GO GREEN AT HOME

idea posted by M DEVADAS BABU Manager - Facilities & Contracts, WALLENIUS WILHELMSEN LOGISTICS

Now a days I see a debate on how India can go green. I had posted some simple 'DOABLE' steps that can be started at HOME. But nobody seems to be reading it. So here I am presenting it in the form of a new IDEA. kindly participate.

Going 'GA GA' over short term histerias is not enough. Planting a tree is not enough. Next day a neighbourhood cattle grazes it away! OR you are more concerned to dust off your car than to pour water to it. Now let us think of some realistic steps which can be implemented at home and if implemented can do the effect of planting 100 trees by one family. Let us go point by point:

1. Avoid wastage of water. Dont be lavish with water while in bathroom. 'WHO' says one bucket of water is enough for a healthy bathing. Fix all the plumbing problems and leakages. Dont procrastinate on this matter.

2.Switch off electrical appliances when not using it.

3. use only energy saving appliances at home like CFL for lights and star rated electrical appliances.

4. Use your car only when going with family. Alone, use your bike. Even try bicycle for nearby destinations and stay fit as a free offer!

5. Print only when extremely required. Use e filing effectively instead.

6. Switch off refrigerators for 3-4 hours in the evenings. Nothing will happen to your food..instead you will save your compressor and save electricity.

Let us start with these simple 'DOABLE' things first. Then we can think about big steps. If every one who reads this tries to implement these steps from now onwards we have already planted a million trees.

I feel  a mass awareness is needed to be created towards trees, functions should be organized at all possible levels of society, State governments and NGOs should work extensively to protact nature by planting trees.

Moreover just planting is not only concern, saving of trees and maintaining them after plantation should also been importance.... some examples should also pused in soceity like:-

Everybirthday shoudl be celebrated with atleast one tree planted or adopted

Everyone should atleast have one or two trees to be fostered ( Care)

Strict laws should be enacted to stop deforestation

awaeness amongst mass is needed to be created

Only one man can't make a change. There has to be different rules working at a time. Government should make strict laws against "Tree Cutters". Also, social awareness has to be promoted. People also should be inclined towards nature and leave their luxuries which is harming the nature. Also, Laws should be made so that if a man cuts one tree, he should plant two trees in its place. In this way, Green India can be made.

No one can withstand The high temperatures we are presently enduring.

Its all because we are ruthlessly extracting the "free" fossil fuel calmly stagnated deep inside and burning it out creating a number of reactions which are dangerous to ourselves.

Let us follow the system of our forefathers-Ayurveda.-it says prevention is better than cure.

globally every one has fallen to the fossil fuel trap.lets make an effort to minimise the use of this fuel in our homes first by self rationing.

Its easy.if we can avoid certain foods because of BP or Cholestrol or diabetes, why not aviod fossil fuel because it contributes to warming

Only it needs consideration to self and others

idea posted by Alexander Lewis Marketing Manager, self

India has a bad mix of illiterates in the areas that are green, and who with their burning and subsistence farming methods have destroyed all vestiges of greenery and forest cover in the country. States like Haryana have indulged in rapacious destruction of tall tree covers etc. for furniture and Gurgaon consumption.

I personally dont subscribe to the idea of planting plants by every urban individual as there are other ways to contribute by not doing destructive activities. For 98 percent of Mumbaiites this is not a practical idea, nor do they know how long it takes for a tree to grow, and what it needs. It will just finish off with a few placards, film industry ka publicity bhooka items and hand holding ceremonies, candle burning activiteis and end of the story.

Mumbai - Hiranandani destroyed the Powai ecosystem which had hills, green cover, lakes, rock climbing facilities through indiscriminate quarrying activities resulting in Powai lake Water Hyacinth problems. The Malad Mangrove is a major area under threat by large builders, a engineering or some such college coming up, and other such stuff.

So all in all there is government, BMC, builder, bankers nexus in systemic systematic rapacious destruction of conservative land cover. Concrete roads buildings and A/C usage further trap heat and do not allow it go upwards, A/cs add to ozone layer destruction. Chloro-floro carbons from A/cs are documented destroyers of the ozone protective layer and Mumbai does have a bad cover, exposing our skins to harmful radiations which next provides industry for skin lotions, something unheard of, and not required 20 years back.

Usage of bottled water and plastic bottles has created a 100 billion USD industry in US that is wrecking envrionment and the Pacific Ocean beach area - this is one area where we can clearly contribute by avoiding wide spread purchase, and provide disposal systems of this. Remember, valuable oil reserves are also utilized in   plastic manufacture.

Cheap washing powders, bar soaps, plastic covers non biodegradable types needs to be stopped.

Ensure your bus and jeep contractors transporting s/w or airline workers have proper pollution checks and certifications of their vehicles, refuse to hire over 15 year vehicles just because Accounts is not willing to subsidise.

Wherever possible, subscribe for e-books and e-bank statements, e-cheques and e-paper, this will save a few trees. Encourage BYOB shops - Bring Your own Bags. These are popular overseas, however in India, the shops are more keen to use large plastic bags to advertise their own brand. (it would help if this paragraph is sent to Mr Biyani :-) - no  personal offense ).

America and Canada individual wise contribute to 20 units of per capita destruction of the envrionment on account of their development. China and others come a distance down between 5 and 10. India comes much lower, but we have 1/5 of the world   population, and even less land cover, our water management is extremely poor, and our civil / civic sense in cities contribute to maybe higher figures. In 5 years, we will have 40% of population in our cities, so one can imagine how many Dharavi's each city would be having destroying water and land resources, ground water just under the ground cover which will go saline due to over usage and borewelling activities.

There is lots and lots more ... this topic requires a 200 page textbook with studies and   practicals in 10th - 12th curriculum compulsory for all lines whether arts / commerce / sciences. Mass mobilization without proper education will  have only pockets of educated preventive activities which will not benefit taking into account the problems involved.

ETRM Energy Trade Risk Management is a new science in India, some companies like TCS - Wipro - Infosys - Sungard are workign around areas to help the corporate sector to clean up their work in exchange for commercial gain and brownie   points and savings in   regulartory and compliances.

THE FIVE BASICS AND LIFE STYLE

idea posted by Ravneet Singh Bhatia Owner, Infrastructure Project Management Group

THE BASIC FIVE ELEMENTS SPACE, LIGHT, AIR, WATER, EARTH ARE BASICS OF HUMAN LIFE, THERE IS NO DISEASE BEYOND THESE FIVE ELEMENTS.

CAN ANY ONE THINK OF DISEASE

SOLID RELATED (FOOD/EARTH ELEMENT)

WATER RELATED(EVERY MATURE ADULT  KNOWS WATER BORNE DISEASE)

AIR BORNE DISEASE

LIGHT BORN DISEASE(MIND RELATED DISEASE)

SPACE DISEASE

THESE FIVE BASICS ARE THE ONLY CAUSE OF ENTIRE LIVING,

ELIMINATE ONE AND LIFE IS GONE.

BUT HUMANS LIVING IN THE SYNTHETIC OR ARTIFICIAL ENVIRONMENT HAS LOST THE SENSE OF BASICS, AND IS GETTING DISEASED.

ONE OF THE ELEMENT IS AIR FOR WHICH GREEN AWARENESS IS NEEDED.

LIFE STYLE CHANGES CAN BRING DOWN THE ENERGY CONSUMPTION LEVELS.

START WORKING EARLY IN THE MORNING, FINISH YOUR JOB BY DAWN,

AND PRAY TO GOD FOR HEALTHY LIFE FOR ALL.

IT WILL SAVE HOW MANY KW AND HOW MUCH GREEN. ITS BEYOND ESTIMATE.

JUST CHANGE THE WAY ONE THINKS, CONNECT EVERYONE TO BASICS.

CHANGE IN THOUGHTS CAN BRING RE EVOLUTION AND SAVE US FROM

DESTRUCTION.

GO GREEN AT HOME

idea posted by M DEVADAS BABU Manager - Facilities & Contracts, WALLENIUS WILHELMSEN LOGISTICS

Every Individual should take responsability not to cut down the trees and at the same time he should plant atleast a tree

idea posted by avvari mohan prasanna phani kumar Asst. systems Engineer, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)

Whether an individual plants a tree are not but he/she should not cut down the existing ones.Because in India for every hour thousands of trees branches touch the roads. If we control this we can achieve "GREEN INDIA" in a fast manner.

why i am saying this is if some one plants a tree the next day some one will cut it.so the main ambition in front of us is to stop cutting the trees.

In addition to this every individual shoul plant a tree.

We (India) have very good environmental law, but execution and our corrupt system are the problems.

do with status and style

idea posted by Sandeep Bansal Director, Creative's Concept

great intiative to move with

off course the day really demands us to save the existance of mankind and also the other voiceless species. i think today everybody want to showoff the status it might be casting votes or adopting slum children. let make it a matter of status quo that could include youth, celebs and everyone who are really concerned with the changing environment.

let give opportunity to everyone to show their bit they have done to save environment. its not force or responsibility, it is something that they will like and would like to do on their own. no preach no speech nothing.

it could be like having papaer bags instead of polythene bags.

designing a website or plateform where people can really interact and talk about their carbon footprints that is carbon emmision while performing different activity.

they can make friends and also earn credits on exploring their wings to enlarge their friend circles who are active green doer.

distributing certificates, lapels and batches to motivate people who has done a great job in the field concerned.

motivating people and specially celebs to use public transport for good cause at least once in a weak.

Stringent Rules on Corporate and Individual Practices

idea posted by Shabab Khan Project Director, Interactive Avenues

This is a global concern which has to be introspected by each individual. No Government or organization alone can do this.

Individuals must check on their carbon footprints and ensure that no natural resources are being RAPED!!! (Apologies for my language, but could not find a better word to use!)

Corporates must be taxed heavily and penalized even more heavily for their Carbon & Chemical Emissions to the nature

All Corporates who are eating up our natural resources which help in reproducing the natural resources should be reprimanded from doing business anywhere in the world!

All politicians who indulge with these corporates who are after money and don't care about natural resources being killed, should be banned from any indulgence in business & politics of the country, region or county.

As an individual, if we know that a certain company or product is being made by killing our natural resources, must not purchase, thereby decreasing sale and ensuring that the company/ product winds up from the market sooner than ever.
