Password security

idea posted by Disha Roy Lecturer, St Xaviers College

What I normally do is, I avoid easy-to-guess passwords, like first names, birthdays and telephone numbers and try to have an alphanumeric password that combines alphabets and numbers. I also change my password at least once a month.

Use appropriate password management techniques and check for https protocol. Additionally, we should not use third party links to enter sensitive data.....

Beware of Fake websites

idea posted by Sonali Sarkar Trading Advisor, American Express

Always check the URL of your bank's web site. If you see anything other than the bank's genuine URL, you know it is fake.

Never enter your user ID or password or such sensitive information without ascertaining that you are on the right web site.

Security Device

idea posted by Smita Mohta Agarwal Senior Associate, Link Legal Advocates
the security device introduced by HSBC bank goes a step ahead than other banks in making net banking safe. For netbanking with HSBC u need to enter a numerical code generated by the device (The Device generates a new code every time u use it). So i guess this is a good step and ensures a further level of security screening..

I agree with Smita! We can make net banking more secure with the help of security device because this process is the combination of password and security device code(which will change within every 10 seconds).

How can we make net banking safe?

Also be sure the website that you are accessing is right or not.. This can be done by observing the following...

1. Check the https link. As most banking site will have high secured webpages that starts with https instead of normal http.

2. Never enter passwords in a pop-screen, as most banks usually avoids asking for login credentials in any pop up screens

3. Never open a banking webpage from a mail (as there is a high chance of it to carrying you to a malicious site). Always type the bank address by your own in the address bar

look for the padlock sign

idea posted by V V N Bhaskararao Chief Technical Officer, Viaton Energy Pvt Ltd
Always type in the address bar and do not enter through search sites. Look for" https" and not" http". " s' added is the secured site and you can see a" pad lock' at right bottom. If you do not find the padlock sign please do not proceed. try typing the address again. Then, frequently change the password. Avoid passwords that can be easily guessed.Wish you safe net banking.

Keyboard enabled software, Security questions etc.

idea posted by KALIYAMOORTHY Oil & Gas Area Coordinator, Undisclosed

In addition to , of what we normally use ie the user ID & Password, there can be, a couple of security question asked for the ID. Once that question is answered correct, only then your account detail can be seen. Moreover, the question is not the same. It is chaged from the list you have given. Also, for entering the Password, web-based key board is enabled ie it will not accept pass word entered through computer key board. These are, some of the security provided by bankers to transact safely on the net.

Transactions done by netbanking should be merged with Mobile banking

idea posted by Sujit Sood :-)
While i completely agree with all ideas given above, i think one point that is getting missed here is the hacking of data by cracking the bank's encryption which sooner or later will hit the banks with venegance. A module merging 2 platforms thereby will help ensure a sronger fortress around the online transactions.

Introducing Two Factor Authentication

idea posted by Raju V P Senior Manager, an International Bank

Till now, almost all the ideas focussed on avoiding fake sites.  But how to ensure that the person logging in is the correct person?  Introduce two factor authentication.

Whatever be the steps, hackers are always one step ahead. One of the best ways to make net banking safe is to follow all the isntructions of your bank like using a virtual keyboard instead of your own, changing your password frequently. deleting all your previous sessions and never to give out your password to anyone.

These are some of the steps that can ensure your net banking remains safe. Additionally never write down your pasword and keep checking your account for any alarming transactions.
