The crisis from which the global economy is still struggling its way out does not change the large picture of optimism, of sustained 6.5% growth in per capita incomes, unprecedented in human history. The world is awash today with investible savings searching for profitable avenues of deployment. India is uniquely placed to take advantage of these footloose funds on the lookout for viable business ideas and execution capability.

India has a tradition not just of ingenuity and innovation and but also of willingness to draw upon the achievements of other cultures and refine and synthesise the home-grown and imported elements into new exemplars of excellence. The kakori kebab, no less than ultra-low cost generic drugs, is proof of this capability. Which, indeed, is the pre-requisite of success in the era of globalisation.

In this regard, how can we power India into an ideas nation?

Bringing smart cards and standardisation of processes to microfinance

idea posted by Sarika Singh Assistant Professor, BIT

Bringing smart cards and standardisation of processes to microfinance, so as to achieve swift scalability, can be an Indian innovation with huge potential to change the fortunes of the poor around the world. Nor is Indian ingenuity restricted to process innovation. From the lowest cost car to low-cost water purifiers and dozens of tech innovations, including a way to have email on phones without GPRS, game-changing products are being churned out of India these days. What has been missing is the ecosystem that would allow ideas to gain flesh and blood, to transform into enterprises that produce wealth and allow people to escape the drudgery of subsistence to allow explorations in the world of thought to produce.

Getting the basics right

idea posted by Sanjay Suvarna Senior Software Developer, a MNC

India as an under-developed nation inhabitated by millions poor doen't need expenditure on flashy infrastruture, unless it has a pay-off (like for attracting foreign tourists). We need to have a set of basic infrastructure facilities of schools & colleges, roads and rail network ,hospitals, foodgrains storage facilities, water management , electricity prodn. & ditribn. of required potential as a pre-requisite for growth.

Ideas and related things will come out only when there is adequate infrastructure for its develpment.

Attach HONESTY TO PURPOSE

Indians may be right on top as individuals in varied fields.

Yet as a nation we must agree we have failed. And if we do not want o even admit course to correction will forever allude.

Such highly celebrated economist at head of affairs and equally well qualified support team while in results: Lowest Infrastructure,  highest corruption, huge fiscal gap, uncontrolled continuing wastage of taxpayers money, spiraling prices can we term them achievements or there are no reasons.

Be wary of schemes like "ideas@economic times"

idea posted by SR Sham Sunder CEO/MD/Director Technoaid

Last year, the Economic times brought out a contest ( a reality show!!!???) entitled "the power of ideas".  In my view, The ET did not handle the event well.  Following were the flaws :

  • There was a template - the participant had to fill in the template.  I understand that in a vast country like India, a topic like this will involve participation from a variety of people and standardization is good tactic.  But the topic was power of "IDEAS"  The template restricted the power of an idea.
  • It forced the participant to tailor the idea to the template - the power of the idea got reduced
  • The evaluation was done by a private equity firm.  Usually, private equity firms have a particular thrust area.  A very open PE firm also has a restricted view.  All that the PE firm wanted was a number of proposals which matched its requirement.
  • The ET fell into the trap and supported the initiative wholeheartedly.  I do not blame the ET.   But a newspaper which has a long history in India can not be a tool in the hands of a company.  All participants looked at ET and not the PE firm.  That way, ET did not understand the power of its own idea.
  • I would not have made a mention of all this, if I had not come across the idea of ET to start the process once again all over.

A Goal for all micro political parties at national level.

idea posted by KALIYAMOORTHY Oil & Gas Area Coordinator, Undisclosed

Unite all political parties to one party to make them understand a common goal , that is to power INDIA. Most of the evils are being spread out by micro political parties that are working as business centers or power brokers. If a Nation breaks this barrier at this stage, may be there, a chance to unravel a heap of power ideas.Mere human resource can not achieve wonders unless it is coupled with adequate resources.
