Employability levels are moderate at the moment, also India has the highest number of hungry people in the world in the recent report, the BPL population is increasing everyday, as people have no jobs to do and with people who have the basic education is that the jobs available and the skills possessed must match. And India is in the piquant situation where its corporate sector complains about a manpower shortage even as millions of (mostly uneducated) Indians hunt for employment.

This is, of course, a larger problem involving government, academia, and the corporate world, but it is perhaps the core challenge facing India if it wants to wipe out poverty. Before unemployment can be reduced, we have to up employability.

So, how can we up the employability levels in India before wiping out poverty??

Vocational training centers all across the country

idea posted by Kriti Das HR Manager, ANZ Information Technology

As India continues to record high growth rates, Government should help to equip the poorest and most marginalised with the skills necessary to participate in the country’s growth story. So, people have already missed out on education can get help from these vocational training centers which promotes livelihoods for the most vulnerable and provides skills training to youth, aimed at linking them with market needs. In doing so it represents a comprehensive strategy to help increase the employability of the country’s youth and eradicate poverty.

A very good idea. Once the vocational institutes opens up all  across the country it will help in increasing the employment level. at the same time the state government and Central Government should ensure the first step to proceed to the next one.

Not only vocational training centers but also, added vocational training streams of education. PARTICULARLY, KEEPING IN MIND OF THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY IMPROVEMENT IN ALL AREAS.

Thanks Mr Badri,

Industry requires sound infrastructure to operate and here the Government is failing especially with poor power situation.

Better policies and correct priorities adopted by the industry and the candidates will help to alleviate and improve the employability position in the country. Apart from better policies, the candidates need to have focused priorities to improve their individual skills so that they can meet the job competency requirement when the job openings are available. This will help them to meet the job requirements.

Thanks for the referral, Natteraja...

The employability levels in India is really a matter of concern. Today the schools, colleges, and other educational institutions have been inculcating the students, including myself, for the purpose of appearing in the examinations to score high marks only and the educational systems have not been reinforced to provide any professional skills which in turn results in low level of employability. Even the subjects selected for any specialization by the students are also meant for passing the exams. The standard of education is at low profile. Hence, in my opinion, our education system needs reform with a view to enhance the employability level at all level. Learning by heart and vomiting the same in the tests is not a good system. The employability relates to the job or the profession which one likes to choose and therefore it is very much necessary to be qualified for the particular profession. Our education system should give self-confidence to accept the challenges and to work independently with self-motivation in the ever changing environment.

Thanks for the referral Mr. Ravindra Sharma Ji.

More job oriented courses

idea posted by Pravin Kumar MBA student, DELHI SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

Today we are seeing more supply for one particular job industry like the IT industry, but many are short on the experience that one has to acquire before joining in that so colleges need to provide courses which are relevant to the industry and not something like the Industry people are complaining that the syallbus doesn't match what they will be doing there, and again company has to put in so much of money in training which is a waste, also stop courses which doesn't fetch them a decent job, there should be proper understanding between the industries and the academicians like this will be the demand down the line so it would be better if these sort of courses are offered to them and not like the present situation where one doesn't have a clue like where they will be getting into...all streams of engineering graduates are going into IT industry which is not a good thing..

I truely support this because the present need is to prepare a person in the field in which he/she is confident or likes to work for longer.

Revamp Education

idea posted by Shahnawaz Islam PR & Media Relations Manager, National Institute of Smart Governance

Employability levels are low because school students are not getting

1) Good English speaking and writing skills

2) Good mathematical skills

3) Good IT skills

4) Ability to think

5) Coaching to school students for their innate skills whether it is sciences, accounts, woodworking, painting, sculpture, writing, singing, dancing, sports, photography, directing, marketing, cooking, slogan-writing or skills related to any vocation. There should be some exposure at the school level for students to find out what they enjoy and are good at, so that they can pursue that at a later stage.

True. Revamp education.

Make schooling even better. Teach students the art of learning (how to learn) instead of teaching them how to rote. Make education more humane oriented than making it analytical oriented. Teach students how to build great team and how to build human relationship than how to write perfect accounts and perfect solution to math problems.

Also, make sure only deserving students go to become graduates. Whereas today every Tom, Dick and Harry are graduates and these people think that they have to do only jobs that are “Graduate Specific”. This is why we have so many unemployed graduates (in fact most of them may be unemployable for that post and get rejected by the company. However they wouldn’t consider any other lower position). Most of them are no doubt qualified, but they neither have the subject knowledge or common sense. Hence, by making graduation very expensive and very tough and by giving scholarship only to very deserving candidates there would be a meaning to being a graduate.

This way, every one can’t become graduates and there won’t be people waiting (despite being unemployed for a long time) to get a “Graduate Specific” job. They also wouldn’t feel it below their dignity to do any other work. Since they are only able to clear high school they would go in for any work. Also many people would consider taking up “job specific” vocational courses after school. And people would seriously consider vocational courses like carpentry, plumbing, A/c technician, etc., etc., and eventually there would be a great demand for these persons. This would also bring proper recognition for these professions and bring about dignity of labour.

This way, unemployment would be reduced. And then they start working about 3 to 5 years early too.

Encouraging entrepreneurship

idea posted by manasi bhupendra maniar MBA/PGDM student, shree jayrambhai patel institute of management

As all have talked about education but if opportunities are not their than there will be no use of education..

and opportunities will come if the innovative ideas are encouraged which will directly increase the employment

Manasi I must admire your thought.

Entrepreneurship is the way forward! As an entrepreneur we can CREAT our own opportunity rather than waiting for  ideal opportunity .Its been long time we are blaming the government and employment scenarios. Now its time to wake up and build our own fortune!

Thank You Mr NATTERAJA R ARIKRISHNAN for referring an interesting debate.

Let destination(assumed) not become the direction. Before a students decides his undergraduate courses, he should be judged not just aptitude but also on his personality .This exercise may have to start quite early in life.

Then education need to be tailored to the needs of the job.It should include not only job related skilsl but also life skills(communication, teamwork , leadership, attitude etc)

Just focusing on job skills can not give us good employees. Most of the successful people are successful because of their life skills.

Its quite common that students tend to follow the trends in the market. They choose the sectors of their interest through their education, economical factors. A demand for IT industry as the most preferred sector for employment is an example for this.Equal imporance has to be given to all the sectors and encourage their growth through appropriate industrial policies is the need for the hour
