So you’ve decided to quit your job. No matter what the reasons, it’s important to make your exit smooth for all parties involved. While you may be moving on to bigger and better things, your current employer still has a business to run. You must maintain your professionalism, no matter how much you feel like dropping everything and walking out the door today.
So, how to do it effectively????

Give plenty of notice

idea posted by Jyoti Kapoor HR Manager, Cybage Software

If your employment contract specifies a notice period, try and abide by it. Plan things out and inform your future employers accordingly. Your organization needs time to plan its activities, be it hiring a replacement, knowledge transfer or moving someone else up.

I’ve seen people saying they can’t serve more than 10 days or try and buy out a notice, and things go into a heated mode. Later, when there’s a background check, it’s like handing out a red card to future employers.

Dear Jyoti

Sorry , but you are again talking from the pure HR point of view. In many companies even after serving 2 months notice people dont get their full and and final settlement . Ofcourse i believe when there is a great opportunity and the employer wants you to join early there is no harm in giving 10 days notice.

I agree that the work should be accomplished but during the notice period the employee in that company go through lots of Behaviourial changes too thats the real bad mentality which our indian corporates have.

Hi,   I frankly feel it is not the no. of days or months that matter. WE can ensure that our exit does not cause much discomfort, by, passing on whatever we can to the next one freely. The moment we kill the natural urge(esp if u  r leaving with a unhappy  feeling) that this organisation must feel my absence.... things will be alright.Let us think of what it gave all along. Then all will follow

Regards

Take top management in confidence before putting your papers

It is good to talk to your immediate boss and convince him with your Decision before actually putting your papers. Tell him your view point for this decision. If management needs you they definitely will try to fulfill your requirements in the organization itself before letting you go publically declare about your decision.

well .. this may not be achieved if an individual is not well versed with senior management practices and procedures. This is even more obvious  if one not closed to " senior management " either by designation or otherwise

if you have made up your mind that you are quitting....

idea posted by RAMESH KANDADAI Principal Consultant, ARM Consultants

Go to your boss and schedule a meeting where you give him the letter. The letter should simply say that you are resigning and as per the clause in your appointment order, you are giving xxx days notice. It should also request them to expedite process so that you are relieved on the due date and all your financial items are fully settled.

If you have a  good relationship with your boss or your senior HR, you should inform them of your reasons for quitting however good/bad they may be, but in the politest terms in a professional manner.

Do not give in to bitterness and bitching....because you past is what will govern your entry in to a new job. These days most companies do check the history and verify it.

As I have always said, it is most important....how you leave and organization.
