The traditional design-bid-build approach, based on the owner, architect and contractor triad, has demonstrated several limitations within the  building type. These limitations generally center on cost control and schedule delays.

Both of these factors—cost and schedule—are so critical that any project-delivery approach that can lessen the uncertainty associated with them will produce a dramatic decrease in risk to the owner. Delays and cost overruns in  projects will negatively affect time to market in a production facility.

A better collaboration among all the factors will definitely help in achieving the target.

So, how can collaboration help projects to be done in a better way??

Shock absorber

idea posted by Mohammad Bakhsh Project Leader/Managing Consultant, Freelancer

The building construction project or any project should be completed  on time and as per specification. The time is sacrosanct and specification the object. The schedule is the HDL or good cholesterol. These three together produce the conceptual plan into real physical object. The collaboration now a days has become necessity rather than the norm.It supplements one to the other and lines up the system to deal with and iron out obstacle on way to  construction activities. It provides flexibility and space absorb and under stand minor or major hold ups.The quality is ensured and the period of gestation is achieved.

I don't know how construction projects are managed in India, but it's been my experience in several other countries that, whereas the accuracy of the plans and specifications, the take-offs and estimates, and the budget are all of critical importance...and whereas architects, engineers, project managers and construction managers all have their place in the overall scheme of any project...it is the Site Supervisor or Project Superintendent who really makes or breaks both the schedule and the budget.  And the best of these are individuals with plenty of hands-on experience and maturity rather than the degree'd and credential'd types being cranked out by the universities these days who wouldn't know how to figure out an hypotenuse without the aid of their laptop.  They are the "Master Sargents" of the construction industry and the good ones absolutely essential to the success of any project.

In construction projects ,there are many things need to be sorted out at site itself and if  remain unattended ,the project may not proceed as per schedule. The collaboration helps in iron out the things and bumps are therefore taken care of.

Access to better resources

idea posted by Ajay Kashyap Project Manager, Polaris Software

Collaboration brings about mixture of knowledge & talents for both the companies. Both companies can access to the talent pool & pick the best men for the job. Thus, the project gets an boost & gets done with a superior quality.

As the owner or general contractor of a construction project one finds oneself, by necessity, in "collaborative" relationships from start to finish.  The question is whether these are de facto associations or simple cases of teamwork OR formal partnerships.  In either case, one should always strive for relationships that only enhance the objective of the project and/or the mission of the company.

Whether one is "shopping" financing, interviewing architects and engineers, evaluating subcontractors and suppliers OR considering entering into a joint venture or partnership for the purposes of the respective project, one must remain focused on the objective/mission.  In other words, who can provide access to the better resources...and even who can provide better access to the essential resources?

Of course, as with so many other things in life, determining the "better" option is not always as simple as it first appears.  There may be a wide variety of intervening variables, not only "up-sides" but "down-sides", to the different options.

In the case of the de facto associations and opportunities for teamwork, one for sure must implement a "pro vs con" evaluation, that is, a risk analysis, where the bottom-line IS the bottom line.  However, in the case of considering a joint venture or partnership where the relationship is likely to be more highly integrated and binding, the bottom-line really becomes whether the other party is absolutely essential to the success of the project OR can one, in fact, effectuate the project successfully on one's own.

Quality = Time & Cost

idea posted by D.R.Balakrishna Planning Engineer, Overseas AST LLC ( UAE )

Quality indeed is enhanced to a great deal.Infact JV's have been a big success in the GCC.One's weakness is converted with the others strength.Civil Engg.projects in particular, prone to disputes needs a good & transparent JV aggrement, bad quality,is compromising Time & Cost. & without these two, project is a failure.

Change attitude towards Owner -Vendor Contrcator or Consultants realationship

idea posted by Prashanta Bhaumik Head/VP/GM-Tech. Support, ASPIRTEK Technology Ltd

All collaborations effectiveness is measured thru EQ( Emotional Quotient) between parties. Most of the Owner feels These outsiders Vendor,Contractor and other associates are to be squeezed for increasing profit. EQ comes down with this distrust from the start. When EQ is high between stakeholder  all sorts of Communication Gaps, Loyality, skilled labour/employees or performance etc comes into play for failure of collaboration. Call them as Business Colleauges as you introduce your own employee instead Vendor or Contractor.

Better Emotuonal Bonding= Better Collaboration True in all kinds of Projects

Well said Sir. Emotional bond should develop first. Heigher the EQ in all the parties, greater the chanaces reduction of gap in communication which shall lead to better collabrations. After all, we are all human beings first.

Action orientation is all the more required by all the memebers to  achieve the objectives.

Better flow of communication

idea posted by Pragya Kothari Construction-Heavy, DLF

A collaboration b/w two companies ensures that there is no communication gap & no mistakes are done in the delivery of the messages. Further collaboration may bring about the mixing of technologies which may further speed up the process of communication.

Thus, better communication helps in proper implementation of instruction & severe mistakes are avoided.
