As I was going through an article it is said that people are planning to go for green roofing. They say that green roofing and construction will help to reduce the global warming. So I am thinking to go for green roofing. I want you to share your opinion on, How do you go for green roofing?

Use insulitte in building material

idea posted by Pragya Kothari Construction-Heavy, DLF

Friends, the energy conservators , and developers of green building products for curbing heat has incorporated a low cost , light weight, thermal, acoustic, fire insulating green building product insulitte by which the heat wave transmission can be reduced, and hence having low thermal conductivity and , is non compressable too. Insulitte the green building product's hollow closed micro-cells prevents all heat exchange through conduction and radiation. Its particles also immobilize the air that is present, preventing heat transmission through convection , thereby leading a permanent energy savings.

The best way is to go for overdeck insulation and this is the most effective way to reduce heat gain by ur roof.Use extruded polystyre foam, for over deck insulation. It is very low conductive material.no water pickup, very high compressive strength, It is a green product, world wide it is known as  best paybeck insulation material, moreover it is being manufactured in india now .Insulation(Roof and wall) is now integrated part of a energy efficient building. and it works like protective layer to ur house from out side wetather conditions too.XPS is also help in your roof garden system, two things are most important system in roof garden 1st your water proofing and and 2nd your insulation ,xps works as a root barrier and as a insulation material.

now the question is how to choose a right insulation?. here are the few points on which you can consider an ideal insulation.

  • Cloosed cell
  • No water absorption
  • High compressive strength
  • Recycle content at least 20%
  • Durability
  • Very low conductivity
  • High thermal resistence
  • Easy application
  • Light weight
  • Easy application

You can use High Albedo ( High Solar Reflective) Roofing Systems.

Roofs full of green plants

According to me roofs full of green plants would help to fight global warming. Green roofs last longer than conventional roofs, reduce energy costs with natural insulation. They absorb storm water, potentially lessening the need for complex and expensive drainage systems. Green roofs also absorb carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming, but nobody has measured the impact until now.

Various Systems available for green roofing

The important factors which are needed for green roofing are a good waterproofing system and plus a good drainage system and the right amount of slope to given to structure where green roof has to be done. Also the right type of substrate is required which is decided as per region's requirements. Also again the energy saving would vary on the type of green roof is designed... It would be less for an extensive green roof and more for a intensive green roof....

slope the roof and cover it with clay tiles.

idea posted by Saleel Deshpande Sr.Architectural Co-ordinator, Dar Al-Handasah(Shair and Partners)

Guys this is not a new idea, but just a try to explore from the chest of traditional construction technics, burried long before. If we study climatology of the particular area/zone where we are planning to execute the structure and then (according to the sun path during winters and summers) slope the roof in such an angle that iin summers max. heat can be reflected while in winters the sun rays are near to perpendicular direction to absorb the heat through the roof and in addition to this clad the roof with clay tiles,i think we can achieve considerable sucess in building the green roof, ofcourse making roofs full of greenary and using insullite are two good options, but are not affordable to everyone.

We all need to study the climate and its behaviour in our projects to create green buildings.

For green roofing we can use Solar Reflective Tiles it will give roof temp. difference of @20 degrees in peak summer and HVAC savings of 20%.Also the water run is 95% and socking of water is only 4.5%. Thus it help us for preventing leakage.

Install high-albedo and vegetated surfaces in combination

idea posted by Suhaib Juwale LEED Coordinator

Use Steep-Sloped Roofs in place of Low-Sloped Roofs for both the type of materials mentioned below because they have high ability to reject solar heat.

For High-Albedo:

  1. Use materials with higher SRI (Solar Reflectance Index) value.
  2. Use materials which are light in color.
For Vegetated Surfaces:
  1. Vegetated roof as a modular system consisting of interlocking trays.
  2. Select native or adapted plant species to reduce or eliminate the need for irrigation.
