Aim for paperless office & LCD monitors

idea posted by Raghu Kastury Principal Consultant & Head of Strategic Business Unit - Retail & Distribution, Sundaram Infotech Solutions Limited

Make paper usage nil. Make printing a difficult job with lots of controls and approvals.

Avoid using high power consuming monitors. Switch terminals off, when you are talking on the phone while at work

Try and use less heat dissipating processors and keep the place well ventilated so that machines work efficiently

Thanks for the apt reply Raghu. Have you heard about NASSCOM's action plan on Green IT on policy and regulatory framework which they have defined.

Aim for less-paper offices and LED

idea posted by Dhananjay Raturi Head of the Department, XYZ

Having paperless offices requires the facilitating and regulating environments to be paperless too.

The Government/Regulatory agencies have a long way to go before becoming paperless. So realistically, businesses as of now must strive to be  less-paper organizations.

LED technology is promising and is the way to go in my opinion.

Yes, that's the way to go. I would also like to add that whoever can, should adopt working on a cloud. Save on transport, office electricity etc, and sit under the cool shade of a tree and do what you do.

Compensate vs regulate

idea posted by Dennis Aries Owner, Arkro IT

Since you cannot compensate the emissions you create by planting trees since earth would not be big enough (for instance, to compensate for a plane-ticket from europe to asia, you'll have to plant about 180 trees and leave them for the duration of a 100 years), the key to "Green IT" will be reducing the amount of energy used.

Enforce some rules in the office:

  • turn off computers if you leave your workplace for the remainder of the day (or hibernate)
  • set your computer in standby when you leave the workplace for more than 5 minutes (can be done by powersaving-options)
  • turn off monitors when you leave your workplace
  • turn off lights when you leave the room (and of course, no-one else is in it). Try to make use of natural light wherever possible.
  • Make use of low-power devices like led-screens and turn of devices that are not in use (USB-devices for instance).
  • Use paper only when needed (for instance, don't print your email unless you really have to).
  • regulate the working-hours, servers can be turned off or put in standby when no-one is working. Same goes for various connections to the office.

Planting trees & taking the measures you suggested are not mutually exclusive.

'Compensate AND regulate' is what i take home from this brilliant insight

Better AC Utilisation in server room

idea posted by V. Srinivas Freelancer, Information Technology
Traditional servers had a very low heat footprint of 1-2 KW at the most. Traditional Room ACs were sufficient to cool the room. Todays specialised servers have a heat footprint olmost or more than 10 times this - they are in the region of 20 - 25 KW. This creates a lot of hot-spots. Instead of having standard room cooling ACs we now need to have specialised Rack Cooling ACs where the AC load is delivered directly at the hot spot. This will drastically reduce the overall AC requirements. Perhaps a mix of general room airconditioners for traditional servers and PCs and specialised Rack/Row oriented ACs for these specialised high density high power servers can do the trick of reducing the overall AC load

Reuse papers and envelopes for internal office use.

idea posted by Bipul Sarma Tech Architect, IBM

Almost all of us use papersfor some purpose or other like printouts etc and almost all printouts  has some unmarked area left like the other side of the paper etc. Also after a few days the printouts are not needed. These papers can be reused for taking notes or other purposes. Also envelopes can be reused for internal office purposes like submitting hard copy proofs for claims etc

Every employee must think about this and it is definitely not an individual contributor role. Encourage and Motivate employees to think on this and get some remarkable ideas from them and reward those who gives the best soloution.

Modify your working environment and maxim usage of sunlight

idea posted by Yuvaraj Programmer & Designer, Cognizant Technology Solutions

We can modify our working environment as allowing more sunlight to get inside. By this we can avoid usage of high power bulbs and tubes even @ day time.

IBM and Siemens has come forward to implement these sorts of techniques.

Think of earlier days how the houses are constructed. The vasthu is also let the same. We descent dont use the techniques of our ancestors.
