Looking at the current scenario from the industry it is seen that the testers are expected to have both technical testing skills as well either need to be from the domain background or have gathered domain knowledge mainly for BFSI is commonly seen.
I would like to know why and when is this domain knowledge imparted to the tester during the testing cycle?

Execute

I think when you know the functional domain better than you can better write and execute more test cases and which can effectively simulate the end user actions which is distinctly a big advantage for the oragnisation.

There is highly  competitive market and one should definitely take advantage of domain knowledge.

I support the idea. Right from the start of the project, when a project manager puts in his understanding to the user requirements about the project, we need the whole team to have some domain knowledge. Test cases, UI design, exception handling to error messages, we need domain specific inputs. Testers can iron out these and can save big embarrassment of the project manager. These are done in industry at the software development level but will be a huge value addition if done on the testing level. While the development team consider it minicule, User/Client is always particular about it. Competitor product evaluation can help the tester in this regard.

I think experienced professional certainly have the advantage of domain and testing experience and they have better understandings of different issues and can deliver the application better and faster.

Scope and Quality of Testing

idea posted by Ajay Business Analyst, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)

If the tester has the domain knowledge about the application he is testing then definitely he has an advantage. Having the domain knowledge provides him an implicit advantage, a background about what he is testing and what outcome should be expected from Business's point of view, hence his scope is increased. Now that tester knows what outcome is expected, he can have relevant test cases and test plan, therefore better quality
