The world is consuming more and more electronic products every year. This has caused a dangerous explosion in electronic scrap (e-waste) containing toxic chemicals and heavy metals that cannot be disposed of or recycled safely. But this problem can be avoided.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of old computers and mobile phones are dumped in landfills or burned in smelters. Thousands more are exported, often illegally, from the Europe, US, Japan and other industrialised countries, to Asia. There, workers at scrap yards, some of whom are children, are exposed to a cocktail of toxic chemicals and poisons. So how effectively e-waste management can be done?

Recycle & Re-use

idea posted by Isha Verma Sales/BD Manager, Larsen & Toubro

Old printer catridges can be recycled and reused instead of opting for new catridges. This could not only reduce the costs but also wastage.Further catridges can be cut and used for making decorative items.Old PC's can be given to those who never used PC'c & don't have the capacity to pay for it.So,if we think critically then we can make a lot of uses from the waste.

A significant percentage of these are dumped because eiother they are obsolete or they are "un-fashionable" to be seen around with! Yes ... many people change electronic equipment just to be current!

I am reasonable positive that a substantial portion of this e-waste can be recycled, re-conditioned and put to use in places where funding is hard to come by: like govt schools, like orphanages and so on.

The biggest issue is that even after 20 years of hardware industry we dont have a developed program for accounting and re-use of electronic waste.

Dear Friends , we should to think about this issue because its a very serious issue.....if we want to save our earth and do not want our earth and atmosphere get destroyed then we must to move towards the Recycling of products and reuse of products. I will appreciate the Nokia step to save the earth by recycling their mobile phones and plant tree for every recycled mobile. After Nokia lots of companies are also doing the same and come forward for the saving of earth..

By adding with our living environment only we get diseases. put in some place and recycle them for further use. Or sell them to recyclers.

Intoducing new technology

Electronic waste mainly consist of their non-degradable polymer cabinats and electonic circuit in which lead lead, tin and other heavy metal is present. In present scenerio the growth &development in electronic goods is large. So we can't effectively do e-waste management only by Recycle & Re-use.we have to introduce new technology like developing bio-degradable polymer, organic semiconductors replacing conventional silicon based IC.

Re-design equipments to be eco-friendly

idea posted by ASOKE KUSARI Domestic Private Banking-Executive/Manager, A large leading PSU Bank - India

Recycling of old items may not be a parmenent solution though it is very much necessary.

The producers of electronic items should re-design their products more and more eco-friendly so that their e-waste do not pose a hazard. Scientists have already found such ingredients already.

Further, concious user may opt for "Eco-friendly" items to make producers bound to follow.
