According to research carried out by Spam Ratings, more than 50 per cent of emails sent out to consumers by top online retailers do not comply with the best practice guidelines laid out by the Direct Marketing Association.

This was down to some companies automatically opting customers in to receive emails, rather than allowing them to proactively sign up. So, how email marketers can act responsibly towards their customers??

Let customers choose if they want to receive mails

idea posted by Meena Deshmukh Product/Brand Manager, Videocon Inds

When somebody is using an online retail format or on online shopping portal...than taking their mail ids and sending continous  mails which would make users to get bugged up and in the end mark it as a spam, create a platform where people should be able to sign up and they themselves are having an option of yes I want to receive mails and other offers from this online source..then people will be happy to receive your mail, than going into spam where you are bombarding mails so that people get to know about  your product..

I am in total agreement with you Meena. There are mails where if you dont want to receive there is an indication and simply indicate wheather you want to receive the mails or not.

In other unwanted mails I simply delete them. Probably most of the user does.

The customer is the king so let him/her choose.

Meena once more you have touched the real issue!

Email marketers have to send emails to unknown contacts.there is no doubt about it.

here is some  guidelines they can follow(if they wish!)

1.Specific Subject line(highlighting the benefit)

2.Choosing a niche(Formula:MAN(Money,Authority,Need)

3. Frequency of email should be moderate(Once /Twice Every month)

N.B:Sending daily emails does not guarantee more sales.Rather Continuity is important while making purchasing decision.

Indraniji Has An Extremely Important Points & Has Intelligently Put It As If He Is The Customer & How He Can React To E-Mail Campaigns. I Fully Agree With Him. But The Essence Should Be To Focus On Only The Best In Quality/ Price To Be Sold Online.... Effectively...

Send Entertaining Creative Virals instead of Mailers

Thanks Meena for your referral.Continuous reminders are at risk, ppl may discard them as spam/unimportant mails (most of us do it).

Indranilji has explained this in detail.

E-mailers are the medium to communicate to customers. Instead of mailsers send Virals in form of creative ads which needs to be entertaining and stress busters. MICROSOFT used this approach for promotion of their new outlook express. Please visit www.webchutney.org. This may help you.

Unsubscribe Option

E-mail marketing is to get the broader base. Even, when the mail owner does not desire to receive mails, by force, mails will be sent to make them aware of the entity. Many a time, it disturbs us when it is not relevant to us but, at time, we see new information to keep us updated. We come to know of such entity existance, particularly, when time & space separates so widely. So considering this positive aspect, we can let them circulate but with the option to unsubscribe if such future  e-mails are planned on periodical basis by the marketer.

Collection of proper email id

idea posted by vibhav Kumar Marketing Executive, Sri Balaji Enterprises

Most of the time email marketers send email in bulk to the customer. They have to select email id first. Now the question is how to select the email id. the best way to select email id during exhibition or from the retail outlet where the customer visit because they want to purchase or they want to know about the product. They are the potential customer or you can use such customer as a referral marketing.
