After days of debate and criticism, the Government may take action against writer Arundhati Roy and Hurriyat hardline leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani for making controversial statements on Kashmir at a meeting in Delhi. According to sources, the Government is contemplating action against both for their controversial statements a few days ago at a seminar in Delhi. Delhi Police may book them on charges of sedition. So, people...How far can freedom of speech be taken?  What are your thoughts on this......

Freedom of speech can never be truly free if it attacks and hurts those who experience the message given. Sure, there is the immediate freedom of being able to deny the whole Kashmir issue.  What service is this message providing and who could possibly benefit from what is at best ignorance and at worst hate and poison?

The other factor is the underlying motive. Speech in this manner has nothing to do with freedom for the message betrays an underlying desire to repress and control. Hate can never offer freedom so in this manner the freedom of this type of speech is repressive and designed to bring discord not peace. The whole point of free speech is freedom and freedom is about expansion and growth and creative, universal momentum infact.

Ideal freedom is limitless. Unfortunately we can never really guarantee it as humans we have our biases and misjudgments. So too sensitivities. It would be total chaos then. But freedom of speech, I believe is limitless. Remember Gandhiji's utterances were considered seditious by the British. So let us sit by and let history make its judgment. I feel statement left alone will not stand the test of time unless there is some solid truth in it. Let us take this test on statements of Ms. Roy. But definitely we have no right to be holy cows and sit on judgment where the other's right start or end. Let time take its toll on people who make irresponsible statements.

Sayed Ali Geelani deserves jail as he is a colluder and instigator. But any police action against Arundhathi roy can only serve her hidden game plan, which is nothing but to be in media limelight. Her type is a harmless creature who can be safely ignored. Let us not make an unnecessary heroine out of her by giving her the status of a “prisoner of conscious” in this subject. That can only give a convenient slogan to the India bashers everywhere and her easy way to an international peace prize.

As a principle, freedom of expression can’t be limited by any whistle blowers. Tolerant and mature societies must be willing to hear all view points; sometimes even thoughts that are “unthinkable”.  Let us hear the opinions patiently. If it is not worth throw it away. Even if ideas are not acceptable let us not crucify the proposer as it is against our ethos. We are a tolerant culture and an open society where freedom of expression has deep roots.

Freedom of speech has no limits really. It's endless and limitless . You cannot give the excuse that it affects sentiments or may cause chaos and riots. As controlling chaos and riots is the responsibility of the security system of a country. And if it goes wrong, then it's the security and administrative system to be held responsible. Freedom of speech has nothing to do with it. When you start a bit of moral policing on speech ( a basic right of every human being), apply small rules on it, then along the ages say 100-200 yrs, these rules and moral policing control every word and action. The moral policing that Indians are suffering today badly. Moral policing and rules over basic rights of an individual help making things blur ( ie. biased, sometimes applied for some one, and not applied other times for an another group). Blurred rules are breeding ground of corruption. No doubts why India excels in the world of corruption today. Freedom of speech is a great tool to curb out corruption and inequality in a country. Why india suffers from heavy corruption is because of the fact that still today there is no practical freedom of speech here. Still people fear to talk freely. They even fear from writing on social platforms for discussion like toostep. When people are given the freedom to say what they want, they never feel frustrated. In fact they are proud of their country and administration, that no matter wrong or right, they are heard and there are chances that their problems would be solved. They are atleast assured of the fact that they won't be beheaded just because of excuses of hurting sentiments, or challenging cultural or religious rule. They develop full trust in their country, it's adminstrative system, security as well as judicial system. India has to go a long way to achieve all this. And freedom of speech is the right door.

Freedom of speech is exactly that - you are free to say anything that you want. Anyone else who disagrees with you can sue legally , if he / she thinks it is worth fighting.

Any freedom which is limited cannot be called a freedom. If a dog is on a leash , then even if the leash is 1 km. long , it is still a leash , and the dog's freedom is not a genuine freedom.

In India , it is fashionable to say freedom of speech hurts sentiments ; when comedians crack jokes about politicians , don't we find it funny ? At the same time , the victims may certainly feel offended ; so do we censor such jokes ?

It is a fact that in India , hurt sentiments are basically an excuse to use violence and gag. Contrast this with what happened in Denmark when a cartoon about the Prophet appeared to hurt Muslim fanatics ; the government provided full protection to the cartoonist ! That is genuine freedom !

Here , a lecturer in Kerala has his hand chopped because he "offended" Muslims. Is this a civilised society , leave alone one which believes in freedom of speech ?

Responding to the argument "Until not hurting others sentiments": At individual level there could forever be few sections that feel hurt through another section exceeding brief. Important issue being Does it hurt the chosen national ethos and values. National pride must remain ahead of individual ego or even assumed self respect.

What is freedom of speech? The speech which expresses individual opinion on subject dear to him/her should  be touted as selling the idea. By this corollary,Arundhati Roy and Geelani can not  influence the masses as they will hardly find the buyers.Regarding freedom of speech,one can not have opinion leading to  disintegration of country,nation and society.

The celebrity status spoils so many parties.The speech delivered by these people becomes front page headlines of National News papers.Their speech which though not well structured is critically examined with reference to current official lines.Thees boiling points raise them further on the ladder of stardom.i personally feel that theses so called celebrities hardly have influence on matters concerning to NATIONAL INTEREST,howsoever, publicity they get in the foreign media.i therefore view that freedom of speech is relative and has direct bearing on the intention of a person who delivers it.

freedom of speech, there are definitley some definitions. even i had a rare and unfortunate instance here in this community when i raised a criticism against a person who said "all Indians are cowards" , the next day my reply had been deleted...( i never said anything which can cause even a thread of hatred) ..and now in this topic...i would really want to say something if you can not judge yourself ..you should not judge others...and i bet in this forum which discusses about the freedom of speech...not very reliable...and thus i know this "idea" will be erased by the "admin". lets laugh together and believe that all are fine or brutal......being that said..Arundhathi Roy trying for a nobel prize..and i am sure she will accept it....she is stumbling....it would be a treat to an "international elite revolutionary squad".....goodlucks to that lady of "mission".

freedom of speech can have far reaching effects if not used prudently. what one speaks is his/her prerogative but it's impact is left un-measured. we all want freedom but are not willing to accept the modalities associated with our speech. i feel that the following should be the boundaries of free speech: - not to insult anyone - not to compromise personal or national security - not to compromise on the modesty of females - not to aid defamation of a person or institution without just cause

We have witnessed in past the impact of restricting the freedom of speech in many countries. The plight of the people was miserable with no right to express themselves. Was it a good approach? The answer is certainly No.

On the other hand, we have witnessed that more and more countries with a democratic framework, are offering more freedom to the people to express their views, thoughts, ideas on all issues. Is it a good approach? Answer is Yes......but with a niggling question of "To what extent......"

Off late, we have observed that this precious gift is being manipulated by the people of all walks of life for fulfilling their selfish goals. It is quite simple to understand that word (pen) is mightier than sword, hence, needs to be spoken with a caution and keeping in mind its far fetching impacts. Whether they are  politician and/or media must have a sense of responsibility and a certain degree of ethics while showcasing their expressions and thoughts.

As this is a very conteporary issue and revolves around; 'How much is too much?" and who would decide it? As there is no set guidelines and standards in regard to 'speech sufficiency' but still, one's own responsibility, morality, commonsense and commitment towards the society allows him/her to keep a check on his/her speech.

It is quite true that one must weigh his/her words before he/she start to speak. We should be careful of expressing our thoughts in public before analysing its long term implications. Freedom of speech with a motive to gain cheap publicity, attain ulterior motives, political mileage  etc. is not at all good for the society in the long run.

Unfortunately, the idea to allow or to block the freedom of speech depends upon the leaders in the government and public pressure. In the current case, Arundati had clarified that she had truly tried to convey the real situation of people's issues. To brand her as anti national or to proceed against her through government machinery perhaps would amount to suppression of rights. We appear to forget the rights conferred by the constitution of india get swayed by fundamentalist approach. The Right to freedom of speech has helped us to see the true side of the picture which sometimes is distorted and hidden from fair view

Freedom of speech can be free:-

  • As far as individual is concerned, one feels free to express without fear or fervor;
  • System of Government is concerned, it's interest are safeguarded;
  • Society is concerned, its cultural norms are maintained;
  • Nation is concerned, its sovereignity is not affected & questioned.

Well, I think right to freedom of speech u/a 19(a) is became new publicity stunt for those so called politicians, social activist who work for people's welfare and create discrimination among people for their own welfare. This is the present situation in India and I don't think one can deny this truth. I never heard that freedom of speech is used by common man on the sensitive issue which can create tension in social atmosphere. We the people of India very enthusiastically made laws for us but hardly possess respect and awareness about it. No matter whether you are social activist or work for it.

Speech is God's gift to mankind. Through speech a human being conveys his thoughts, sentiments and feeling to others. Freedom of speech and expression is thus a natural right, which a human being acquires on birth. "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; the right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek and receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers. This freedom can be used to the extent as long as it is true and you can prove it.

Debate and Discuss issues. Confine to that, and leave the judgement. Sensationalise issues for TPR is the order of the day! It looks as if they are taking the mantle of every issue on their hand and at times play the role of "Ombudsman", etc.

what is wrong with selfishness. it concerns ( and protects ) you and no one else. except that a selfish person expects evey one else to be unselfish . only in such a situation can the selfish person really remain selfish. in short selfishness is a trait which i would like to have and others should not have. freedom of speech is a perfect selfish trait.

Freedom of speech dosn't mean that we start accusing someone with inappropriate words. Freedom of speech to no limits but with precautions yes ...that can also be a path to follow. At times we need harsh words & harsh words dosn't insulting someone's feeling or sentiments but yes it dose mean to create a wave in silent sea..that yes that can be done by practicing a speech which completely transparent ...coz things which are true,transparent & spoken directly on our face are always fearsome...and are always beyond limits & expectation
