Face this fact immediately. If people are not handling their problems and creating them for you to solve then you do not have efficient people. Chances are that you are so dependent on them because there is no system in place. |

I am facing the similar fire fighting scenario daily in office.
When two individuals of the same department fail to cooperate with each other where both need each others help daily. We start becoming middle men to their arguements reducing our working time.
Its the worst situation that can happen to any one.

Yes , You are right Nikhil.
I also experienced the same 4/5 years back.
Though I was not dependent on them because I can do their work also, but
most of the time I was engaged in doing their work or helping them.
But later on I found that some of them were doing this purposely, then I had
started to fire in weekly review meeting without taking specific names which
really works.
& certainly it improves our performance.

Fire fighting resets the priorities to short term as solving the problem is of greatest importance. Long term priorities are shelved for the time being as all resources are involved in fire fighting. Consequently, individuals are re-assigned often. So yes, individual performance will be affected. |

It is true that firefighting drastically affects one performance. Fire fighting is not only related to one's performance but it affects the growth in totality and no organization can became a success if the partners fail to take accountability.
The only solution is traning the resource or if required replacement.
Well explained, Mr Kandadai,
Disruption of priorities and focus, in turn may have their own share of impacts. However having ace problem shooters and firefighters in an organisation is almost always a bonus as they are able to minimize the impact. For those around it is an opportunity to grab and learn the skills.

In my career, mostly i have been on firefighting mode, and at some point of time i started believing that this firefighting is my only job. The moment i accepted the fact, i never felt the heat again and everything started to settle down. When i am in firefighting mode, my mind works faster and better. i get lots of innovative ideas to reduce the work, mind automatically prioritizes all n tasks at run time, and all this happens without any conscious effort. Those who douse fire can have better ideas to avoid firefighting. As an individual it gives you confidence, after all you don't call evil for help but you ask God to help you. |

I think fire fighting mode it increases productivity because lesser productivity has created this firefighting situation and high productivity can only help to overcome that.

Only true leader would except a new challenge! Meaning if there is a team of 15 or so people it is up to the manager to keep the team constantly on their toes. If you keep changing the environment or an approach to a particular work every other 3 or 6 months will help the team learn and avoid mistakes which in turn gives them the confidence and passion to work. Slackers will have no choice but get into the game. Shake things around make work exciting not boring! |

I have done such fire fighting job and it has rather helped me in doing my job. Because the the 'fire' between some other teams was actually goingto hamper my progress. By going forward and fighting it out I got my way cleared....and I was rewarded by the organisation also for doing so. |

It is agreeable that fire is never desireable...but what when you are caught in fire? Sit and start analysing or first fight it out?
Very few Executives will agree that fire fighting is beneficial and never a good Executive or Managers. Only it helps the person who has created the fire fighting situation as only the person who has created the fire fighting situation is better prepared to solve it. As most Managers in big organizations have their hands full, they do not do any analysis who is the cause for the fire fighting situation? Also the work of other persons are also disturbed who have to prioritise this work over their own commitments.

I would like to add that constantly firefighting at the workplace can lead to overall lower productivity as people will become less efficient in their tasks. The environment created by constant firefighting is not the most conducive to bring out the best in people at the workplace.

firefighting at work can be useful as far as employee is concerned. It can boost confidence of that employee if he got success in the activity which he is doing, but it can also decreases confidence in the failure. |

Firefighting should be limited to a certain level and things need to be escalated if the fight goes in vain. Roles and responsibilities should be clear and escalation matrix should be defined to avoid pitfalls.

Firefighting to solve major problems/meeting timelines is part of the everyday life of most companies. It is the duty of every employee to help the team and the company get past such hurdles to meet the deliverables. I do not think that this in anyway hampers one's performance, in fact it adds value and brownie points to one's growth in the organisation. Such a person in fact is the joy of any project manager/company management. |

Kerela IT firms are hunting hackers .. recruiting them in their companies...This is unique way of finding the talent because formal degree does not matter here and what you get is the best people. But what about safety factor.. Is your comany... |
Reservations are always in govt orgs.. and the drop outs do not open them.. do they? Managers having poor marks has nothing to do here becasue either they have establlished the platform or they have enough experience and to add to this let me tell you... |
Business schools were meant to be guides and they don't create a perfect person, they give raw mind a direction. |
