Home minister P. Chidambaram conceded on recently that a short-staffed, poorly trained and ill-equipped security force was hobbling India’s fight against Maoist insurgents, and asked state governments to double the recruitment of police personnel.

Policing a country with insufficient police stations and inadequate and ill-equipped police forces makes the task almost formidable, among states Chhattisgarh is the worst-hit by Maoist violence, especially in the past two months, where attacks on security personnel and civilians have left scores dead.

So, one thing is clear that there aren't enough police personnel around to take care of things, in short there is a mis-match interms of police personnel in all the states. So, how can government attract more people to join police force?

Give them the tools

idea posted by Dayanand Deshpande Senior Consultant, Ernst & Young

I mean there are very few people who take Police seriously, I mean who will care if a police is having a lati in his hand and can't match the speed of a lawbreaker with that fat belly of his, there is nothing that they do they just stand, give them tools with which they can tackle these law breakers, and with such a huge population due to various reasons the crime rate is increasing and we still dont see police new guns still they are having the old gun which will take all day to be loaded where as criminals are equipped with ak-47's and other stuffs, its a scary situation out there, so this is the reason why many don't opt for Police profession....

Thanks Mr.Dayanad Despande for having referred.

The police personnel/the troops should be provided with sophisticated weapons to tackle all types of terrorists, antisocial elements, and rioter, rebels. It may please be noted that they are having better weapons and vehicles which helps them to attack the people and to escape very fast from the spot and the security forces are unable to do anything in most cases.

Dayanand yor are right.

If the police force is well equipped with necessary tools then it will easy for

them to fight against anti-social elements & thives/ terrorists.

It is very easy to make abusive statement against police as we are making

impression after seeing any hindi movie.

It is not 100% true. It is really a hard job as they don't have weekly off, leave

facility for family affairs. They hardly have time to spend with their family.

So if Govt. want to attract more & more people to join Police force, then they

have to fullfill it's basic need like other Govt servants -

such as good salary, staff quarters in good living condition, & weekly off &

leave as per other Govt. rules.

Define their role in society and groom them for it.

When we see a policeman , we very rarely feel that they are in any way equipped to maintain law and order. Most of the time , we see policemen directing traffic ; but is this their role in society ?

How many policemen are trained in even one martial art ? If you ask me , it should be mandatory for policemen to achieve a level of proficiency in at least two martial arts ; if we don't want to go the Western way , we have at least yoga and kalaripayattu as traditional Indian practices.

Secondly , policemen should undergo management courses tailored to their level , since they have to deal with members of society from all levels.

They need to have leadership qualities , since ultimately society should look up to them.

They should be paid well and looked after well , so that they take pride in their jobs ; it is tragic that one kind of uniformed professionals ( in the armed forces ) is so well taken care of , while their cousins the police are so shabbily treated. This disparity has to be removed.

Govt.must consider the Police Dept. in such a way that should

1.be reflective of the community they serve(socio-cultural interface)

2.amend "Yes-Boss Attitude "

3.not be treated as "Law enforcement agency" only

4.insulate(to a certain extent;100% not possible)political interference .Generally,Thanas (police stations) are the soft targets of politicians...

its is 24 hour job ( even though there are some flexibilities) . and they get a very less remuneration. and the people who secure us are unsecured themselves. they should be paid well. just like an army person. Police is close to us. and we should treat them well.

Policing with an ACT designed by someone else to rule a slave colony with a clear thinking to keep most powers in ruler hands and leaving most to discretion is what is still in practice. Reference is to POLICE ACT 1861.

If the country still wants to be ruled with master-slave relationship imagine what will sophisticated guns do?

The need is to first correct the basis that fails to treat citizen as equal.

If the government wants to attract more people to join the police force, more should be done to show people the benefits of being on the police force. There should be a better effort to help curtail corruption in the police force. The government should do more to improve their image & how they operate. The government & police force should take inventory of how they operate now then take continuous steps on improvements, police education & training, public education & awareness. The government should improve their hiring practices & how they market themselves.

It was so attractive job till government has started arresting policemen themselves. On one side they want more policemen and on other side they are spoiling the USP of the job....i.e. they are the final authority in the society and can not be policed no matter what and how they do.

curtail corruption

today,if any body asks which Govt.dept is more corrupted, answer is very straight and simple and that is police dept.corruption starts with the very first stage of selection itself and go on and on in every process till reqruitment and postings.unholy nexus with anti-social elements who are eminent with politicians also deride the moral of police.in today's system,if any candidate has to fetch huge money just to get an interview letter to the selection, how can we think of ethics and duty boundness from persons from that background?so,i think to get good and correct personnels for this dept, curtailing corruption from beginning stage is very much necessary.

by winning the confidence of people... means today if you see not civilion trust the police force means 'unnecessay koi bhi police ke lafre mein nahi parna chahta'... it is very much required to create an environment where a civilion could see police as an help as ambulance, fire fighter service... the day it will happen, many many will come ahead to join this force...

I don't think PC has to put in extra efforts to attract people.  Anyways government jobs are lucrative by knowing the lifetime benefits.  People run for it, have to pay bribes to get it.

If I recollect properly, in last few recruitment drives/exams (in Maharashtra) there was huge rush to join the police force.  There are incidences where police has to do lathicharge to control the thousands of aspiring candidates.

Just announce the drive and get it done!  Candidates, officers, politicians will be happy to earn and state will have more police/people to guard us.

IMAGINE A TRAINER PUMPING HATRED AGAINST CRIMINALS AND ANTI SOCIAL ACS IN YOUNG PEOPLE. IF LIFE SHEDDING TERRORISTS CAN BE MADE THEN WHY CAN'T WE BUILD COPS WITH SUCH PASSION. IT ONLY NEEDS A LEADER AND AN INSTITUTE.

Policemen are the most distrusted ppl in any govt dept. The whole perception, that policemen are cruel, dishonest, drunk, has to undergo a radical change, and only ppl like Kiran Bedi and higher IPS officers can offer suitable solutions.

WHEN I SAY ORGANISATION IT MEANS A WELL ORGANISED BODY WHERE ALL HUMAN RESOURCES ACTIVITIES WILL BE CARRIED OUT. FOR Eg. IF IN AN IT IDUSTRY WORK STRESS,LONG WORKING HOURS AND PROMOTIONAL CONFLICTS ARE DEAL WITH THE HEALP OF HR PROFESSIONALS WITH ADECUATE FINANCIAL SUPPORT. DIFFERENT TOOLS OF HR ARE USED LIKE TRAINING, TALENT AQUISATION, RIGHT MAN FOR RIGHT JOB, AND NO POLITICS. THERE SHOULD BE AREA WISE SELECTION TO COPE UP WITH CULTURE OF COMMUNITY FOR Eg FOR MUMBAI REGION RECRUITMENT SHOULD BE FROM AND WITHIN MUMBAI CANDIDATES AND THEIR TRANSFERS SHOULD BE WITHIN MUMBAI SO THEY WILL BE CONFIDENT TO TAKE DECESION WITHOUT FEAR OF INTERFERENCE OF POLITICAL PARTES.SAME TIME THEY WILL BE WELL VERSED WITH THE CULTURE OF MUMBAI. NO VILLAGE INDUSTRY. SAME WAY RECRUITMENT IN VILLAGE PLACES SHOULD BE RESTRICTED TO TALUKA OR DISTRICT WISE SO THAT PERSON WILL BE WELL AQUINTED WITH CULTURE AND PSYCOLOGY OF VILLAGE COMMUNITY. TOIPC IS TOO WAST AND NEED PROPER RESEARCH AND THOUGHT PROCESS

Every village, town, city, industry and business, has two kind of people the honest and dishonest, known for good or bad reasons with varied degrees.

Involving the honest and known for good deeds in such a processes ensures many corrections in process flaws.

Honesty in selection is a prerequisite though which may be much more difficult to achieve.
