Hospital administrator - Should be Medical background with exceptional administrator skills
|
|
In Many Hospitals, Hospital administrators are seen as people who are employed by the management to watch over clinicians and other staff. Most non medical people who take the role of the administrators do not understand that there are two interested entities due to which an hospital runs - a) Patient who needs clinical advice and b) a clinician who can provide that advice. The interaction takes place in a hospital set up. The administrator needs to understand that until and unless he makes both parties a) and b) get engaged and ensures that there is a positive outcome, he/she does not add any value. Though this premise sounds very basic in most cases this is ignored or forgotten |

yes certainly a hospital administrator should have a medical background as hospitals are becoming business places real business stands only on the background of good customer understanding ie understanding a patient which possible only by a medical person.
The hospital scenario in India is quite competitive. Hence its imperative that the Hospital administrator have exceptional administrator skills. One cannot forget that hospitals are very sensitive places one wrong move by the administrator which leads to the dissatisfaction of a doctor/patience/nurse or even a wardboy can have lasting effects on the image of that hospital, so its imperative for him to know the technicalities of running a hospital which implies he should have some medical background.
Background of the medical knowledge plus some exposure through management studies will make edge over others as they understand both the aspects of administration & medical care. They understand the needs of the patients and utilization of resources tactfully to achieve the same. I consider the presence of these proffesionals will make the differance.

I believe that the hospital administrator is responsible for the allocation of resources at the disposal of the institution and therefore plays an important role. The hospital administrator plays a vital a role in saving lives, without having to take scalpel in hand. Hospital administrators manage hospitals, outpatient clinics, hospices, and drug-abuse treatment centers. Their responsibilities are numerous and sometimes require the assistance of the medical and support staff. They act as liaisons between governing boards, medical staff, and department heads and integrate the activities of all departments so they function as a whole. |

yes, definitely a hospital administrator has to deal with the hospital staff an supportive staff as well as with the patients also...he is the person who act as a link between hospital and its users i.e. patient, consumable suppliers etc..

In my opinion the private hospitals value the role of hospital administrators and that's the reason we have seen a rise in the demand of hospital administrators in recent years. Now a days the administrators are mainly from non-medical background. I believe non-medicos can make better administrators because unlike doctors their minds are less occupied. On the other hand, the skills of a doctor should not be wasted especially in developing countries where the doctor to patient ratio is already low. Moreover, most of the work health administrators do in administration doesn't require medical knowledge. |

i strongly agree to u maa'm,definately the hospitals should be managed by non-medicos background, for that they can be given a general basic knowledge of medicos, while pursuing their post graduate degree in hospital administration..as the work of doctor is very sensitive, and lots of technical and analyatical skill are required,if they were engaged in administrative purposes they could nt be able to deliver their full effort to the patient...

Capital equipment investment in corporate hospital is on the rise. Identifying the equipment with the required specification, life cycle cost analysis, effective utilisation etc can be managed well by adminsitrators with Bio-Medical Engineering background with additional qualifications in Hospital Administration |

well it is unfortunate that managerial issues are less adressed in every field in our Indian set up more so in govt hospital. However concept corporate hospital has led to some input and NABH guideline has definitely put thing aside(past forgotten) and management people do find their role in hospital management. However corporate concept will ruin the basic ehtical practice and it will be more commerce oriented(profit oriented),despite improvement in quality care. |

what we need to do to give importance to working class II and class I medical specialist to offer management course or to allow them to administer the respective
hospitals only after some basic course.Preferably they should be given
distance education for HRM MBA or part time or full time one or two year course for better out come.
I strongly believe that doctors can be good manager(history says engineer)
It is time for dual course(medical +management)
sorry for triple course(medical +management+IT)
that will give best result

Management,,,administration are themselves full time job.. What we Indians are lacking in is not brain but managerial skills..thus lot of brain drain..Why A doctor whose work is curative and sometimes preventive be burdened with other jobs.,Though his role and advice for management is indispensable but it doesnt imply that he shud be the one taking care of all the rthings, This double task has ruined Indian public health system where doctors arecdealing with other issues of handling money, drogs procurement and rest..Motivation is the bigggest drive for human resource and we cant ignore it on medical front concerned ith saving lives. But corporates are primarily commercial organisation. Thus they can assure administration but quality and inflated bills can always be questioned. A system with good mix will be helpful but administrators othr than doctors has to have a role..

In my opinion looking into the ratio of Drs -patient in India we should focus more on skilled development on hospital management rather than arguing on who can manage better. Both can do better if they have right attitude in place and enthu of learning.... this is also core of management i.e. right allocation of resources at right place at right time

Hospital Administration should be handled by the trained professionals but not by doctors. Doctors are known for their treatment and people give respect to them as Bhagwaan and housekeeping, maintenance, general admin are not their business. |
