In an attempt to position themselves as truly global players, Indian IT majors are expanding like anything,  and in that regard companies like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys and Wipro and many others are setting up their offices in other parts of the world already.

But these companies which are traditionally Indian, now will be going to be an Multinational entity, though this is not a new thing for them, but many times Indian companies will be having the Indian mentality and the values which will somewhat doesn't fit in with the environment where they are operating, like this there will be many problems for an Indian company to operate in a non Indian environment, so, how Indian conglomerates should operate in foreign countries? do share your views.

Hiring Locals

idea posted by Darshana Sawant HR Manager, Leading IT services company

I mean hiring locals would be the best possible solution for anyone who is operating in a new place, it would be better if someone who is handling the company knows everything about the local market  and who are their competitors and what needs to be done and will be in a better position to handle most of the things, I have seen many times an Indian company always looks to hire Indians for the top positions, but then if he has no prior knowledge of how things run in the local market, it will be even difficult for him to handle things though he was doing the same thing in India, so hiring locals for junior and mid-level positions, and it will do more better if the main operations are headed by a Foreign national. so Hiring the locals would be the right move for Indian companies operating in foreign countries.

I support aadee and his valuable point. It is true Indians can work is any atmosphere and can adjust to any culture. It is known that Indian employees are the best employees all over the globe.

I totally agree with Darshana. For running your successful in a particular region or country you must be aware of culture and customs of that particular country.Locals will be a better choice because they are more comfortable with the environment.
They can be more efficient in their work because they are familier with the enviornment and conditions.

I support Ajay Sharma on this debate. This problem mainly arise in Indains only that wether an Indian can be succeed in the position in other country. please believe me that Indians are one of the best talented ones who can work even under tremendous pressure under any circumstances.

Adapting Indian Culture values to Local Cuture

idea posted by Pedro Gonzalez Lopez Advance Quality Engineer, Alps Electric

I would suggest to Indian conglomerates to study first the local culture to identify which cultural values are similar and which ones are different (even opposite), in order to find ways to strength the similar values and reduce the distance between the different ones.

I would go with Pedro as the cultural difference could bring down the organizational values. It is better to adapt and address the cultural difference first and choose the alternative based on that

Dear friend, Indians are flexible to any culture, can live in any kind of culture and can accept others culture as their own when out of country. Please try to talk to any Indian to clarify this.

Respecting Demographic Sensibilities

idea posted by Kashif Billal Training & Induction Manager, H&M Hennes & Mauritz

For a Matter of fact, it is very Important for any Conglomerate to Respect, Understand & Abide to the Local Cultures. Since, these Cultures are Lifestyles are the Core Values of the Regional talent.

To further expand on what Kashif has commented, what he means here is that whatever the location, Indian conglomerates need to keep the values of the local culture and try to integrate the well being in the policy structure of the daily working of the company!1

Apart from hiring local talent the issue of keeping them LOYAL to you is extremely important and hence understanding this aspect of working is extremely important to any Indian company operating on foreign shores!!

political move

idea posted by KR BALA Providing HR Services, Independent HR Consultant

Its a free economy so corporates can set up offices in foreign land,The venture may ofcourse showcase India providing jobs to Americans, but how about India depriving jobs for Indians. Also will it not arrest the in flow of foreign exchange into our country.I have my doubts if TCS & Infosey's,will be able to break even,Effective outsourcing is all about reducing cost....but can we beat American wage laws. All said I think it is one political step to defend Obama's toasting for an indispensable India.

Ability

As you already said they are in the international market and moving too,…why? Because they have the ability to stand in the international market and ability can’t be measured only in one thing. Depending upon the International market, business needs, customer requirements and by managing the law & situations they are coming out with the +ve response.

It cannot be operate by a political view or by local people it can be operate by the fulfillment of the need and how smoothly/satisfactorily it will be delivered.

I think that the depressed international market and strong domestic growth presents an unique opportunity to Indian Conglomerates to acquire key longterm assets abroad.

Many Indian companies when work in foreign, they try to copy the foreign companies. This should not happen. If we can be successful in India then it doesn't mean we will be successful in any other country but it also doesn't mean we will be fail there. There can be many factors for this but one might be ' try not to match others but try to develop own identity'.
