Going green has been the mission statement of several manufacturing companies. Green manufacturing is a method for manufacturing that minimizes waste and pollution. What are the ways in which a manufacturing plant can go green?

Please share your ideas... :)

Design the product for reuse.

idea posted by Isha Verma Sales/BD Manager, Larsen & Toubro

In my opinion, designing of the product is an important step in going green. This refers to designing products so that they can be used in later generations of products. In some cases this means that a product is made with recycling capabilities in mind. The newer models can be created not by the creation of an entirely new product but by adding to the existing product, thus eliminating waste and unnecessary product costs.

Definately making the products which can be re used can help us to reduce pollution to a great extent...Number of products manufactured which are re used, the manufacturer will produce less which will lead to less use of energy, resources, etc which can be utilized in some other productive purpose...

Now a days many products, things are recycled and same which were previously thrown as garbage and waste are Re used which is helping us to reduce pollution....Paper, empty plastic bottle, plastic wrapers nd many more things which previously leaded to increase garbage is now recycled...Recycling of waste papers is the best of all which has helped us by reduction in cutting of trees to some extent...

We all should encourage manufacturers to produce such products  by demanding such products which  can be Re used. It will help us too, to save our money also.    That way also if we think it is helpful to all of us and the MAIN and Most important ENVIRONMENT....

Designing a product as a means of green manufacturing

in my opinion this  is  great statement .thanks  for  ur  referals

Even manufacturing plants should be designed in such a manner that minimal power consumption takes place and more and more recycling activity takes place so that we can reuse a single thing many times. Even a product should be manufactured in such a manner so that it can be used again and again thus creating less harm to the environment...

Green Certification under IGBC Green Factory scheme

idea posted by Ankit Founder CEO, EnerArch

Manufacturing plants, industrial buildings and factories can now be Green certified under IGBC Green Factory protocol.

Yes, Constructing Green Buildings, Green Offices & Green Homes for all disinfectant activity including Green Factories would reduce the recurring O&M Costs of these Buildings and reduce the burden on the Water & Fossil Fuel Resources, while decreasing the Emissions into the Environment.  This also should be supported by the Green Supply-Chain & Manufacturing Processes.

Existing Buildings can go for E.C.B.C. (Energy Conservation Building Code of India, 2006) to achieve the similar results, while concentrating on acquiring Green Supply-Chain & Manufacturing Processes.

pollution control, treatment plants and mass transport will reduce emissions.

pollution control by manufacturing technology changes and treatment of exhaust's before releasing to atmosphere and mass transport to pollution by reducing too many vehivles.

Well said Nageswara, the manufacturing plant should adopt some technology to control the amount of smoke emitted during the production. This is the first step they should follow to go green. This can be done by implementing treatment plant in the exhaust process.

Thanks....

Minimising energy usuage.

idea posted by Susmita Roy Project Manager, Tata Steel

Reducing energy consumption is the most common and simplest place to start when it comes to turning the manufacturing plant green. We can also find alternate means of getting energy for the manufacturing plant. The less amount of traditional energy sources we use, the lower the air pollution. Types of alternative energy resources include solar power, hydro power, thermal power and bio fuels. The change to solar power using solar panels otherwise known as a photovoltaic generator can reduce the carbon emissions by 100 tons

Topic for discussion was "How manufacturing plants can go green?" & But everybody is talking about green product design. I like the way Isha conveyed her msg.

I am waiting for some good discussion over "How manufacturing plants can go green?"

Understand Corporate Social Responsibilities

idea posted by prakashraj kumavat MBA/PGDM student, Omegan School of Business (ICFAI Tripura)

In India day by day manufacturing plants are growing very high. More & more factories are opening & creating pollution, so manufacturer should also think about his social responsibilities. It is very important to understand Corporate Social Responsibilities. So marketer should make CSR as a part of his business, which would help him not only to prevent pollution but also to have a brand image in the markets.

The term greenfield was originally used in construction and development to reference land that has never been used (e.g. green or new), where there was no need to demolish or rebuild any existing structures.  Today, the term greenfield project is used in many industries, including software development where it means to start a project without the need to consider any prior work.

Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) compliant building

idea posted by Ankit Founder CEO, EnerArch

Comply your building to meet Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) requirements. ECBC is India 1st Energy code applicable to all comercial buildings in India with a connected load of 500kW or more.

idea posted by yoginder kumar Sales/BD Manager Cethar Vessels Ltd

Vehicular emission is one of major source of carbon emission it should be reduced by following practices:

1) By developing other sources for transportation using electric batteries, hydrogen cells which will have almost nil pollution.

2) Developing good transportation system in the cities and reducing dependence on private vehicles.

I beg to differ with Ankit on this as IGBC Green Factory Building Rating System addresses the non-process issues of the Factory Building, without interfering with the process issues. A plant can go green only when it simultaneously addresses both its process and non-process consumption of the natural resources. The best way is to operate from a Green Factory Building as well as adapting the ‘Clean-manufacturing Process (es)’

Minimise wastage and using the recycled waste for utilities and product manufacturing

idea posted by Ramakrishna Perumal Electrical Specialist Engineer,

There will be lot of waste generated from manufacturing a product, all these waste can be used for manufacturing some other product or these waste or used for power generation or for plant utilities  etc. Also products can be designed in such way that requirement of fresh or new raw materials are minimised as far as possible so that the products are mainly depend upon the old used materials or waste materials.
