The electricity sector in India is predominantly controlled by the Government of India's public sector undertakings (PSUs). Major PSUs involved in the generation of electricity include National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) and Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCI). Besides PSUs, several state-level corporations also produce power.

India is world's 6th largest energy consumer, accounting for 3.4% of global energy consumption. Due to India's economic rise, the demand for energy has grown at an average of 3.6% per annum over the past 30 years. In March 2009, the installed power generation capacity of India stood at 147,000 MW while the per capita power consumption stood at 612 kWH.  The total demand for electricity in India is expected to cross 950,000 MW by 2030.

So, how can optimal power generation could be done for India without putting pressure on the non-renewable resources? Give your Ideas....

Perfect Combination of All modes of Power Generation...

idea posted by Sampanna Shastry Deputy Manager- Marketing & Sales, Arani Power Systems Ltd

I strongly believe in Perfectly Identifying the Methods of Power generation based on Reliability of Fuel available.. The goovt shud come up wid some Strategy for meeting the upcoming Power needs...

They need to segreagate the Source of Generation ( Thermal, Nuclear, Renewables, Hydro etc) and Identifying which way to be most Important and reliable for meeting growing Power requirements...

In order to achieve target set, they shud focus on growth of the Individual sector...

e.g. Like by 2030 the 50- 60 % requirement shud be met by Say Thermal Power plants.. Then Identify the fuels availble and Quantify Target and identify geographical Loactions where this can go in a big way.. and shud come with strategies where not only PSUs but also priavte players to be encouraged to Invest or go with BOOT kind of Projects....

Similerly this can be done for Nuclear, Hydro and Nuclear methods of Power Generation...

So broadly I feel the Mix of Differnt combinations can help India to come up as Strong economy with ample of Power available not only for House Holds bt also Industries....

I also agreed their idea. there should be more investment in constructing power plants in India and the knowledge of wind mill and their usage to every individual Indians. Compact  wind mill should be developed which can be used in also medium scale industries and even in homes for a limited power generation.so we can tolerate some of requirement and will be a self satisfactory to India.

Use of Solar Power

idea posted by Vineet Prakash Sales/BD Manager, Tata Power

Sun is the main source of energy & we can easily harvest the solar energy to use for various purposes. The govt. should go for a large scale solar harvesting project where enough power can be generated to support the demand.

Solar cells can be used by the public to reduce the power problems & the govt. should make it mandatory.

India is blessed with significant hours of sunlight during the year. However, India requires a significant amount of base load generation which renewable generation still cannot provide. Nevertheless, I believe that India should move towards renewable generation as base load generation (coal, nuclear, hydro) is very expensive. The developed world has focused on these sources for base load generation but with new technology India can skip this generation just like it did in telecom. India had poor infrastruture in fixed line telecom but with the advent of wireless, it essentially skipped this generation of technology and this is the reason that mobile phone adoption has been very high and quick.

India could follow a similar model in the case of energy - encouraging the use of solar - probably in all roof top buildings. The best use would be in commercial buildings since they are aligned with sunlight hours. Consumption during the day is higher in commercial buildings. The Govt. could implement a Feed in Tariff program with higher rates for solar power supplied into the grid. Solar panel are also becoming more efficient and cheaper. Future technologies that allow storage may one day allow renewable generation to replace base load.

definitely it would be a cheaper one if government decide to plant it on large scale. investing in this sector will ultimately benefit to the people of our country.

Using nuclear power

idea posted by karthik Tester, Excelacom Technologies

Nuclear energy can be considered the future of energy for india provided appropriate steps are taken in by government. Already the nuclear sale agreement has been signed between india and US. Russia is ready to support in terms of nuclear technology and they have incorporated their technical help to construct nuclear reactors. Considering these factors, nuclear power can certainly provide sufficient energy for future energy requirements. Government should take more steps to produce nuclear fuel and more funds being alloted for the nulear reactors.

Yes..i do think using nuclear power will meet our future energy demands..

Govt. has taken a step in this by signing nuclear deal but we indians always hav attitude to oppose developement ..we have seen opposition to setup nuclear plants by environmentalists (so called but this opposition is by some local political leaders for their own benefits or political gains)..govt. needs to educate ppl of our energy requirements and that nuclear plants are a must

OR We Electical Engineers can take intiation by makin ppl aware of this by blogging..usin social networkin site etc., AND MAKE PPL UNDERSTAND AND SUPPORT PROPOSED POWER PLANTS :)

Innovative combination of both Conventional & Non-Conventional source of energy.

idea posted by Dr. Siva Adarsh Consultant, Metabolic Disease & Research, Narayana Hrudayalaya

Innovative here refers to new way of harnessing conventional sources of energy. for Ex.

Hydro power is mainly generated from large dams. We all have dams in our house (water tanks), but we dont harness power from it. we can make use of micro turbines placed along the pipes at a most ergonomic potential height and the power generated from them, though small and not continuous, would lessen the burden if properly interlinked.

just consider when all houses having such micro turbines (each contributing small amount of power),starts generating a cumulative power at least during morning hours; how much power it would generate?

Wind power:  is a good source with large blades and turbines in country sides, but what about cities where the wind power is never utilized?

Cities have high rise buildings, the higher you go up, the wind current increases. Instead of installing one large wind turbine, one can install a number of small/micro wind turbines at all sides of the building along its height (of course by once again innovatively preserving the aesthetic look of the building). These micro turbines would generate power round the clock and their cumulative effective power would be vast considering the number of high rise buildings present.

Gobar Gas Technology: This source wont be possible in cities where sewage systems are connected to municipal pipes. however in most suburban areas and rural areas, all have a sewage dump area and the gases generated from these dumps can be tapped and used to generate power (if not continuous). ENERGY FROM OUR OWN WASTE !!! HOWS THAT !!!

Solar Cells: Are expensive, but very much practically useful for independent houses.

All these initiatives can be bolstered by the Govt by becoming proactive and providing subsidies for such installations. Moreover govt can also workout power management like that happens in other countries, where an individual who has surplus power can sell it to main grid (things like this happens in USA).

Reduce The T&D losses

idea posted by suraj dev singh B.Tech/B.E. student, Jai narain college of technology,bhopal,M.P.

Transmission and distribution losses in India are much more than any developed country.

and these T&D losses are not only transmission and distribution losses but are THEFT & DACOITY losses.a major portion of the generated electricity goes waste due to theft because they are done by using low grade wires.

other than that hybrid renewable energy sources such as solar-wind systems etc will be very promising in optimizing the Indian energy scenario.

This is THE first step !

I would request all those asking for more power generation to go through the following articles :

1.  http://cleantechindia.wordpress.com/2008/07/16/indias-electricity-transmission-and-distribution-losses/

power generation , destribution by private players

idea posted by PazhoorGopalaPanikkar CTO/CIO, mahadevmetalikspvtlimited

The government should allow the private players to generate power and destibute .They should also allow private players to make their own generation,Tranmission  and destribution companies by decontrolling the price for a period of 5years. This will,  private   companies  to go to un explored areas to generate power.

PGPanikkar

Promote micro power generation

idea posted by Ashoka B kalgude Executive, Biocon India

There are remote places which are not covered by grid, and hounded with power cuts in India. Make technology and finance available for starting community power generation by the way of wind/solar/Biogas. The community can be Panchayat or group of neighbours.

Develop technology for those micro power generation. More over technology reaching people of villages is important. Banks should be involved in proving loans to such plants. Make  the solar water heating a compulsory for new Houses.

All these technology should free from taxes and duties apart from generous subsidies.
