Most often it is said that stress and a poor work-life balance can really affect an employee’s well-being and, subsequently, his or her output and this is now a well-known fact I guess for all.

But while companies around the world are mapping employee stress as a compulsory HR activity, the concept is only now gaining ground in India. So, how can organizations incorporate something like fun at work?? Share your views on this..

Specialised Yoga and power naps

idea posted by Renne Sharma HR Analyst, ABC Consulting

Not many but very few organizations are coming up with these tools liek fun at work by incorporating specialised yoga and power naps for half hour or so.  Which is making one's work all the more interesting and in a way they are also taking care of their body which is under tremendous stress all the time when they are working..

Today the corporate heads of the so-called ‘best workplace’ companies are developing various ways to keep their employees in high spirits. As HR's begin to realise that money may not be enough to make an employee deliver his best, new concepts are being tried out to see how employees react and whether their satisfaction and happiness translates into growth and better bottomline.

There is a time for work , and a time for play

1.  Let each employee who has a desk job , have enough workspace which he / she can call their own. Allow them the freedom to decorate this workspace the way they want , as long as they do not do anything offensive like nude pinups or abusive graffiti

2.  Let each employee have his / her own designated free time , when they will not be disturbed ; stress invariably is a result of an intrusion into your free time ; you have just put your feet up , and wanted to savour that cup of tea / coffee , and suddenly there's the call from your boss , wanting you in his / her office immediately !

3.  Have a bulletin board , which will be dedicated to all the good things which happen to us and our families ( you'll be surprised how frequent these events are , given that our lives are so miserable ! ). Someone's 10 month old daughter has just walked her first few steps , someone else got a prize in the fancy dress competition ,... Every company should have a culture which celebrates these small every day matters.

4.  Have boards dedicated to "Thought for the day" , which can be an inspirational quote , a different one for every day. You can have a board which celebrates all the different milestones in the company's history - the day the company bagged its first big contract , the day the company received its first national award ,... Make your employees proud to be part of history.

I would say that stress is being overrated because nothing which can be achieved can ever generate stress ; stress is always the result of uncertainty and doubt. Management is how to deal with uncertainty and doubt. If a company is managed well , its employees will not be under unmanageable stress.

A surgeon who carries out a 19 hour operation is not under stress , because throughout those 19 hours , every action of his / hers is flowing from knowledge and skill. There is always uncertainty about the outcome , but as long as you are sure that you have put in your best , there is no stress. Stress comes when you are not sure that you have done everything that you could have. Stress comes when you feel ill-equipped to deal with situations. This is where training can help.

When there is an accident , an untrained person feels helpless and stressed ; a trained nurse or first-aider does not have any stress.

Build a Fun Committee.

Pick up few members from the team who are pro- active and enthusiastic in nature and would be responsible for organizing fun activities for the team. Rotate the members in the fun committee in periodic basis to get new ideas and keep the activities rolling.
