These days, the workforce of any organisation has a strong population of employees that belong to the older generation along with the younger one.

There is a major difference in the working style, attitude and expectations of these different generations as well. Organisations increasingly have to face major challenges arising from the demographic shift of the workforce.

So, how should organizations treat their old employees??

Give them importance

idea posted by Dipika Das Associate/Sr. Associate -(NonTechnical), ABC Consultants Private Limited

There is a lot that these older employees bring to an organisation. These senior employees, being older in the system, bring continuity to the processes, practices, culture and value system. They form the solid citizens of the organisation, thus bringing in stability and sustainability . Their knowledge is quite indepth and thorough; they act as mentors and guides to the young lot in the system.

It is giving importance to loyalty. Old here means Loyal, but senior may not always be as competent as a junior though he is more conversant with the value system, and processes. Loyalty certainly deserves treatment with respect and importance. Good topic Dipika

Older employees are always a asset to the company. They carry a lot of experiences at their back which will be valuable to the company and also to newer employees..

This is on the presumption that the older employees are more knoweldgeable and competent and can act as mentors for younger employees. Such employees automatically earn the dignity and respect

Give them promotion if they deserve

idea posted by Priyanka Malihalli Payroll Analyst, Hewitt Associates

Organization should value the contribution of old employees. They really must have made the team, project to reach the destination. Organization should bifurcate there job responsibilities as per their seniority. They should be given timely promotion if they really deserve, only being old in the organization doesn't add value they should sincerely contribute best for being senior.

idea posted by irbha magotra MBA/PGDM student, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra

old employees working in an organization from past some years may be form last 4-5 years should be treated as asset and organizations should try to extratct as much as it can from ol employees. In this era, where a new technology will be launched in every month or two, investing on old employees  may or may not work. Employees should be treateed as part of organization even if they plan to leave the organization

both elder and younger generations need to understand that they have a complementary role and not a conflictying one with each trying to help each other mutually for holistic benifit of getting a heady concoctation of experiance along with dynamisim.

the old employees know how to solve the problem, how to react, according to the situation they will manage. so, the youger must obey them and must mengle with tat employees and share their ideas.bcz the older employees know the system, proceses, they have lot of experience too and they know the value system of the organisation, thats bring the stability to led the project to suceess.

Past employees have emotional attachment with the organisation. if they are induced into the current operations they create a re-in forced attitude towards the organisation and can also help in retaining manpower for longer period. I hope that bigger institutions should offer open job offer to ex-employees who have resigned.

Role of Mentoring in the organisation.

idea posted by Karthik Sai Sundaram Senior Project Engineer, Qatar Petroleum

Older employees carry wealth of experience which cannot be replaced. They should act as mentors for their juniors so that a blend of newer ideas/systems/process blend with lessons learnt from experiences. This will help build effective organisations with better productivity and culture. When middle aged employee see their older counterparts treated with respect, they will also respect the organisation and see for themselves future within the organisation. This will help the organisation grow. Older employees can also nurture their juniors to take their position which also forms a part of mentoring.
