I think people generally don’t like to constantly search for their favorite sections. They want standard sections where they know they can find things easily and comfortably. I don’t believe people have problems with advertisements, after all they realize it supports production costs. They just want more content. I’ve seen instances where you might get one column of news and everything else is advertising. There should be some sort of rule prohibiting no more than 50 per cent advertising on any given page unless the whole page is devoted to advertising. There should also be no advertising whatsoever on the cover page of a newspaper.

yes, a news paper must set his firm ideology on this respect. It is much essential when advertisement load is a day to day feature. 60/40 ratio is alway ideal for a newspaper.
I agree that one page should not have more than 50% of advertisements. 60% editorial and 40% advertisements is the Benchmark for all newspapers.
If there are more advertisements reader will be less interested and time spent in reading a newspaper will reduce in long run or reader will look out for more choice like other newspapers, internet, magazines books etc.

I have been reading different newspapers from India and abroad for past many years. Personally, I have always liked the content which was written in a very easy to understand language rather than the articles having 'heavy words' for which one will look for a dictionary to understand the exact meaning of the phrase. Though using dictionary also has its own advantages, but if a journalist / writer expects that the new generation of readers--- who are described as 'scanners' (always in a hurry to scan the written part through their eyes) by famous newspaper designer Mario Garcia ---, will open a dictionary to understand a word in order to get to the real meaning of an article, is nothing but overexpectation. Writing simple language is the most difficult art which every writer / journalist should try to learn in order to make sure that the hardwork they are putting into their work should realise its full potential in the form of maximum readership as well as exact understanding by all the readers... However, if one has to use words which are not 'common', the dictionary meaning should be provided either within the article or at the end (like it is done when a currency valuation is used in an article and a footnote provides the assumption at which the current value was calculated). |

Yes even i agree with you Balram...that Newspapers should be with simple language...and not with words where common man cannot understand....it should be easy to understand......and simple which will help the readers....

Newspapers should encourage its readers to respond to what they like and what they do not in everyday's newspaper.

News paper industry is the only industry in which after a certainlevel of circulation marginal reveue drops. People read newspaper for information nt for advertisement. But as an business entity they have to focus on revenue which is advertisement. So Print has to price their advertisement in such a way that they shouhd not have to compromise with content. |

I fully agree with Devesh, people read newspapers for content i.e., news. If people are satisfied with the quality of news then will definitely buy it and refer it also. This will increase the number of readers and therefore advertisements will follow.
They should just print the news which is essential and do not try to stretch it unnessarily, moreover they should publish newspapers two times a day.
