Post-radioactive leak in Delhi recently, a reality check in Bangalore showed that the city was sitting on a live bomb with many colleges and other institutions having no clue as to what to do with the radioactive waste in their labs. Its a situation where another incident like Delhi could happen in anyother city in India.

And many colleges and labs in India they don't even have an idea of disposing a radio active substance. They just use it and leave it in the open in many colleges, and the worst part is the professors who teach and do research on them don't have an idea of disposing it.

And exposure to these Radioactive materials is very dangerous and many scrap dealers who deal with the waste they don't know which is radioactive and which is not. This makes them the most vulnerable to Radioactive attack like that happened in Delhi where one person was killed and several others got injured.

And this is very important people. So, How Radioactive waste management should happen?? Do share your views on this.

Consult AERB (Atomic energy regulatory board)

idea posted by Sudeep Tarafdar Senior Consultant, IBM

All institutions who are using radioactive material first have to inform the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) after they have used the material. Under AERB supervision, the residue or waste has to be collected and disposed of at radioactive waste management centres of the Bhabha Atomic Research Institute (BARC), Trombay. This is one way to manage Radioactive waste under the expert guidance of AERB.  Atleast AERB in their website should mention how safely one can dispose of Radioactive material, that will help others a lot.

According to me AERB stands responsible for such mishaps. There should be a rule in place that any material which contains atomic perticles should be handed back to AERB and under any circumstances should not be sold.

I thought AERB was the one responsible for this all the way

I concur with Sudeep. Also the AERB should be more on top of things including the government.  People should not be so careless when working with radioactive products or waste. People should know and understand that radioactive materials & waste is highly dangerous and should not be taken lightly. There should be more attention, awareness, education & action taken on radioactive materials. People handling such materials should take more precautions.

Hazard Prevention and Safety should become a subject

idea posted by Ravindra Sharma Managing Consultant, CHEF-India

It is not about radioactive material alone. The basic safety protocols of handling chemicals and dangerous materials is missing in curriculum or at best handled lightly. Categorization of hazardous substances handling, transport  and storage protocols all are detailed subjects that need be taken up much more seriously.

A Premier University failing in this matter is a matter of national shame more than anything as the people in AERB, are as well from such institutions only. The incident raises a much more basic questions, if understood with positive perspectives on several aspects.

This is very very serious matter of concern for all. When they don't know how to dispose the radioactive material then why they are allowed to use... this is not correct at all... Prevention is better than cure, hence all users should know the preventive and safety measures in handling such material. I think there is no proper awareness has been created.

Thanks Mr.Ravindra Sharma Ji for the referral.

I think Knowledge sharing is the only way to overcome such life threatening issues.

Yes, to create awareness:

- the product manuals need to be updated with the caution and the label

- a topic to be included in the academics

- creation of a department by the government and advertising it on television would be helpful.

Like Stock that lost it's value

idea posted by Mathew Cherian Research Associate/Analyst, Western Michigan University

Radio active waste is like a stock that lost it's value. When buyers preceive something has value they will buy it and when they see it has negative value they abstain from buying it.

Radioactive waste is like a negative value product but has the paradoxical state that some poor economies find value in it buy allowing it to be dumped in their environment the host country gets some pay from the country that throws it ther.

So this is the solution countries like France follows.

It should also include educating peoples who use it and also not use it abt. retroactive waste management.

Its a matter of deep concern. First of all, the AERB should have prescribed the ways to handle such radio-active substances, be it in educational institutions or elsewhere. It is not correct to penalise educational institutions now. In the days of licence raj, had there been any specific licence to be obtained before procuring such equipment that use radio-active material, covering the waste management methodologies too, such instances could definitely have been avoided. In India, we learn by mistakes only, and the system that are in place are basically evolved over a period of time based on trial and error. We regularly receive containers of waste from various countries, and the customs or port officials obviously have no method to screen the materials. Tonnes of such wastes are docked in Kerala ports, unattended and unclaimed due to litigations. Who cares?

Pro-active Government Support

idea posted by S. Muralidharan Executive Director, Knowledge Foundation & Campus Around the Corner
Generally, people tend to avoid visiting any Government Body, viz., Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, etc. for want of willing support from the competent authority. Therefore, unused, under-utilized radio-active gadgets and equipment are sold on "As is Whereis" basis. The central purchase department do not necessarily possess the knowledge about the impending danger that these equipment might create to the public if sold as trash. General awareness should be created. Government can easily regulate usage of these items. A streamlined approach with all safeguards as per international standards should be in place with greater awareness training to the users and other departments within the establishment should be imparted so that such untoward incidents can be avoided.
